okay, but formulaic
Revisado: 09-07-22
I've been binging on the whole series, and since they had to get a different writer, since Larsen died, the quality really went downhill. They're getting more and more like Nancy Drew novels. The original 3 were captivating, and had a real depth to them. These newer ones feel like hastily refinished old furniture. Salander's character is becoming more and more like a mythical animal, and less like a compelling and relatable character. There's less time devoted to her inner workings, and her sections of the book mainly deal with the actions she takes, becoming essentially like an unfeeling invulnerable and technologically overpowered Terminator. I've heard that after the next book, they found a different writer. I really hope that she delves more deeply into intellectual topics and what makes them interesting to Salander.
The narrator is lovely as always.

lacking personality
Revisado: 09-04-22
Though this was entertaining in that it has some good thrilling moments, and the boy and his father are interesting characters, it relies too much on past books for character development, and makes things unravel too easily towards the end. It feels formulaic.

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

The Movie was Better
Revisado: 05-31-22
Performance - mostly excellent, except the voice actress starts out with the wrong accent for Van Helsing, and it's wearing.
Story - I didn't know that the love story between Mina and Dracula was made up for the film. I think it brought so much more depth to the character of Dracula, that this otherwise great book is sorely lacking in. Having just finished it, I feel so unfulfilled that the line about the count being capable of love is never explored.

I love these narrators
Revisado: 07-09-21
The performance is so so nice. The divide in male/female thinking in the story is tedious for me at this point, but I love the quality of the reading so much that I would probably finish the series anyway. Also, it's funny to see where George RR Martin got pretty much all his ideas for Game of Thrones.

this far in, I'm hoping all these nonsense divisions between male and female thought lead somewhere productive. if I have to hear oneone more time, one sex complaining how the other isn't right in the head....

In each of his books, James Bradley has exposed the hidden truths behind America's engagement in Asia. Now comes his most engrossing work yet. Beginning in the 1850s, Bradley introduces us to the prominent Americans who made their fortunes in the China opium trade. As they - good Christians all - profitably addicted millions, American missionaries arrived, promising salvation for those who adopted Western ways.

narrator doesn't know Chinese
Revisado: 07-17-20
This book was so good! There was so much I was never taught in school, and that was contradictory to what I learned in school. Wonderfully written, too. The narrator has a great voice, I think it's especially well suited for this book, but I struggled listening to the lack of awareness of Chinese names. He tried, but his pronunciation changed for Chiang throughout, which made it very difficult to distinguish from Jung, or Chong. It also grates on me that the names were written using the old Latinizations of Chinese, instead of the more modern Pinyin, which makes it so much easier for people to pronounce Chinese correctly. I know it makes sense for continuity with old texts from the time, but it's painfully outdated.

Not the performance I was looking for
Revisado: 08-17-19
I hate to speak ill of the dead, but the voices were all over the place throughout his narration of this series. The voices of various characters changed without reason, and many of the voices didn't fit their descriptions and/or were somewhat offensive when you imagine them as people and not caricatures. His voice when he was simply narrating actions and not voices was wonderful and rich, but the voices he chose to use often detracted from the characters they portrayed.

I didn't cry, but it was good
Revisado: 11-25-18
There were parts at which I found I was so invested in a certain outcome that I had to take breaks because I was so upset. The descriptions are great, but I found something about either their length, or the way they were narrated wasn't able to keep my attention, so I did have to repeat some things. But mind, I really did care to hear and remember all the details correctly. All the little details really make this a great story.

Also known as Demons, The Possessed is a powerful socio-political novel about revolutionary ideas and the radicals behind them. It follows the career of Pyotr Stepanovich Verkhovensky, a political terrorist who leads a group of nihilists on a demonic quest for societal breakdown. They are consumed by their desires and ideals, and have surrendered themselves fully to the darkness of their "demons". This possession leads them to engulf a quiet provincial town and subject it to a storm of violence.

eh
Revisado: 11-16-18
I liked the style (at least of this translation) but I was annoyed by the ignorant ideas about what would motivate atheist persons. I kept waiting for the rebuttal to the idea one needs a god for a purpose to live, but maybe I am expecting too much of people back then. But Constance Gregory is perfect as always. I downloaded this book after listening to his awesome work on the Brothers Karamazov.
