Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

why, oh, why did I wait so long to read Dickens?
Revisado: 08-29-23
this is my first foray into Dickens aside from A Christmas Carol. so good! I couldn't put it down, but also dreaded running out of the story. if you're worried about it being stodgy or having antiquated language or setting, please don't fret. if anything, you'll be amazed at how similar the 1860s are to the 2020s. the narrator is excellent, too.

Maya’s mother had always been a source of support - until Maya became a mother herself. Then the parent who had once been so capable and attentive became suddenly and inexplicably unavailable.

Yet Another Millennial Reading Her Own Memior
Revisado: 07-11-23
I love first generation immigrant stories and this got such good reviews; I was hopeful. I should have looked more carefully, though, to see that the author is also the reader. If you've read Crying in H-Mart, it's a very similar book and performance. The author has some interesting insights and a creative direction for her memoir. She shoots herself in the food, though, when she begins using her memoir as a personal journal or therapist's couch rather than a medium to tell a great story. She then really runs it into the ground when she reads her own audio book. I think authors are smart to give a little distance to their work and not be too precious about their own feelings. Perhaps waiting to write the book until more time has elapsed would help deeper revelations AND lighter notes to really rise to the foreground....and then, hand it off to a professional reader who will allow the book to stand on it's own as a book and not as the author's precious keepsake.
If this is your genre but you agree with my frustrations, I recommend Esmeralda Santiago's memoirs. They're a great example of someone with great mother-daughter stories, but good distance and perspective in her writing. (And she doesn't insist on reading her own audiobooks.) I also recommend Jhumpa Lahiri's writing about translating/not translating her own work, which seems similar to wanting to read one's own audiobook.

Incredible Story of Faith
Revisado: 04-26-23
Darlene's story is one of true, gritty faith, friendship, astounding circumstances and humor. I cried, praised the Lord, laughed, and worried right alongside her. Her story is absolutely one of the great tales of a servant of Christ.

Historia
Chesterton's allegorical masterpiece is a surreal, psychologically thrilling novel that centres on seven anarchists in turn of the century London who call themselves by the names of days of the week. The story begins when poet Gabriel Syme is recruited as a detective to a secret anarchist division of Scotland Yard by a shrouded, nameless person. Syme infiltrates a secret meeting of anarchists who are intent on destroying the world and becomes known as 'Thursday', one of the seven members of the Central Anarchist Council.

Great Voice Acting & Great Story
Revisado: 04-10-23
I hadn't read any of Chesterton's fiction previously, and this was a fascinating listen. At several points, I was completely blindsided by a plot twist. His characters are deep, woven with layers of allegory, humor, and literary meaning. Chesterton influenced CS Lewis and is worth a listen if for no other reason than to get a glimpse of what Lewis himself read as he was shaping his thoughts about faith and literature.

Historia
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Good!
Revisado: 02-25-23
I agree with other reviewers who had said it has a blenderized timeline. Overall, I didn't find that to be too troubling and I really didn't have much trouble keeping up with the characters, which I can't say for all audible books. In general, I liked the story, but I did feel there were some aspects that were pretty repetitive. For example, the romance sections felt similar to one another and maybe a little bit overdrawn. There were a few hours of audio where I wondered if I had chosen a book from a genre I hadn't intended to! The true storyline is great, and I enjoyed reading about the real character. Definitely worth a listen, but don't expect the best literature you've ever read. I think one thing that made it feel a little bit odd to me - or even lowbrow - is that the author writes in present tense. I find that very unusual and a little bit amateurish.

I Gave It a Listen
Revisado: 02-17-23
The story was fine, but it was a little overdrawn as were the accents on the voice actors. Is old-timey Southern a genre? I guess it's just not really for me. It feels to syrupy, stereotypical, smarmy, and trying to hard. Maybe we should leave Gone with the Wind as the pinnacle of the genre and move on to other types of books...

Historia
In Prey, Ayaan Hirsi Ali presents startling statistics, criminal cases and personal testimony. Among these facts: In 2014, sexual violence in Western Europe surged following a period of stability. This violence isn’t a figment of alt-right propaganda, Hirsi Ali insists, even if neo-Nazis exaggerate it. It’s a real problem that Europe—and the world—cannot continue to ignore. She explains why so many young Muslim men who arrive in Europe engage in sexual harassment and violence, tracing the roots of sexual violence in the Muslim world.

Revisado: 02-02-23
I have been reading and chewing on Hirsi Ali's work for a decade now. She is always well-researched, well-written, and thought and action provoking. I'm only giving four stars because I really wanted to hear her thoughts on America: contrasting and comparing our situation to Europe's, which she only did in passing. Maybe I'll run into her in a coffee shop someday and will get to ask her!

The definitive, intimate, no-holds-barred biography of Johnny Cash. People don't just listen to Johnny Cash - they believe in him. Although part of his life has been told on film, there are many compelling layers to his story that have remained hidden - until now. Robert Hilburn tells the unvarnished truth about a musical icon whose personal life was far more troubled and his artistry much more profound than even his most devoted fans have realized.

I have been captivated by this listen! As a longtime Johnny Cash fan, it is incredible to learn so much detail about his story. I knew the gist, but not all of it. The author takes us through the story in a way that has sparked my curiosity. I've done a lot of side researching, googling images, and pausing to go to YouTube and listen to songs and full albums. This is a fascinating look into the world of recording studios and record labels; there's so much about the industry I never understood until this book. I love the details of Cash's relationship to other artists of several eras and with his own band mates.
Cash is a great example of how history is dotted with some spectacular humans who accomplish unbelievable feats of talent, artistry, and grit in their lifetime. In Johnny Cash's example, he kept the faith, despite many ups and downs, and produced untold amounts of cultural capital.
The performance is good, but there are some funny bits where you can tell the recording was spliced. He also pronounces words with t's in the middle in a very funny and precise way. Definitely not a big deal, but certainly idiosyncratic. I really liked when he read quotes of Johnny Cash - he truly captured Cash's real voice.
