For when Kirstin opens their front door one day, she finds the brother she long thought dead on the other side. Wonderful story, but unsatisfactory narration
Revisado: 05-27-23
The storyline is wonderful if a little stressful. It’s a story of patience and faith.
The narration is annoying and I almost returned the book. But the characters were compelling enough to keep me listening, even though the narration was sub par.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Harry’s narration is wonderful
Revisado: 03-29-23
I’m typically not a royal, watch her, but after watching The Crown, I happened upon this book. I wondered if it was going to be a good narration… I was more than pleasantly surprised. Harry tells his story wonderfully. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is even remotely interested in the English Royals.

Historia
In a career that spanned decades, John Denver earned international acclaim as a singer, songwriter, actor, and environmental activist. Songs like "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High", and "Annie's Song" have entered the canon of universal anthems, but at his start John Denver was a young man with little more than a fine voice, a guitar, and a dream. Growing up in a conservative military family, he was not expected to drop out of college and head to Los Angeles, where the music scene was flourishing. Nor was he expected to succeed.

I always loved John Denver
Revisado: 02-06-23
After hearing a podcast about John Denver, I decided to find the book and I hoped would be on Audible. Thankfully, it was. It was so good to hear John Denvers on voice telling his own story. I knew he had some interesting philosophies, but I had no idea how different from the general American experience he was if you are a John Denver fan I highly recommend getting this book.

Tracie Peterson delivers again
Revisado: 01-05-23
I have not found a Tracie Peterson book that I haven’t liked. She pulls you in to the story and makes you completely invested in the characters. The only negative thing I have to say is that I did not care for this narrator. I didn’t think her voice suited the characters that she was portraying.

Story is good, but the narration is not.
Revisado: 09-20-22
I would have preferred the narrator to jut read the book instead of trying the over-done Norwegian accents. When the narrator uses his natural voice, it's got a very nice tone and depth. Honestly though, the only narrator I have liked for this series is Stina Nielsen. The first one couldn't pronounce Ingeborg (pronouncing it with a D at the end.) I'm looking forward to re-listening to the last part of the series where Nielsen takes over. I'm a commuter and audio books are the only way I can enjoy a book. So, I'll bear with it because I know the book itself will be good. I'm guessing the narration choices were made by producers anyway.

Story is fine...but the narrator is not very good
Revisado: 08-24-21
In my humble opinion, the book needed a different narrator. There are narrators that can pull off voices of the opposite sex, but Battoe is not one of them. Her female character voices are good, but the male voice are completely cringe-worthy. If I had the time to sit and read, I would read rather than listen. Great narrators are rare, so I try to take the ones I don't care for with a grain of salt.
The storyline is fine, even if the writing isn't top notch. I'm not here to read Hemingway or Faulkner. It's the steamy stuff that I'm here for, and James delivers it.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 08-07-21
I took a chance on this book having never heard of it or its author. The story had an intriguing hook and I enjoyed it until I got to the point where there were two hours left. By then, I expected to get some serious hints as to what the big mystery of the book was. Not only were there no hints, but the book just stops. No climax, no promise of a sequel and not enough information to guess how the plot would have been satisfactorily wrapped up . It felt like the author left the reader in a cliffhanger that wouldn’t be resolved.
The narrator has a pleasant voice, but the females all sounded a lot alike, as did the males.
I’ll think twice before listening to the author and/or the narrator.

Worst WWII fiction I have listened to
Revisado: 02-23-20
To say I was disappointed in this book is an understatement. I love historical fiction, especially about WWII. I slogged through book because it was so highly touted, the whole time thinking it would really get good. However, I got about 3 chapters in and had to go back and relisten to them because I couldn’t understand what was going on. I kept listening, waiting to care about what happened to the characters. But when I got to the end, I was irritated that I had spent a credit and wasted 16 hours on this book.
A lot of the lackluster was due to the narrator’s performance. His biggest flaw was that he didn’t vary the numerous characters’ voices. it was all done in his normal voice. That made this poor plot even more confusing. However, even a satisfactory narrator wouldn’t be able to help a plot that went nowhere: no great or exciting revelations, no heroic scenes, and very little that was really all that harrowing.
A bit of a spoiler: The whole book is built around two protagonists on opposite sides of the war. I got the feeling that they would meet. They did finally meet, but it was a complete let down. By the time the book is over, one of them dies in a way that is completely out of the blue and that scene ends abruptly without a satisfying resolution. I know the reader is supposed to care that that protagonist died - and I usually have a good cry when that happens - but I did not care at all.
Also, while there is SOME factual history, it’s not enough to satisfy readers of WWII fiction and nonfiction. And the worst part is that the author really downplays the viciousness of the Nazis. It’s not that aren’t instances of cruelty, but they really come off as watered down versions of the evil Nazi history.
The pitfalls of the book may have been easier to overlook if there was a romance or a close relationship that would make the reader really root for one of the characters. But I just didn’t find that to be the case here.
Essentially, I don’t understand why this book is so popular. I hope to God they don’t make it into a movie!
