Historia
Offering a frank and funny critique of the cultural forces that are driving us mad, Caroline Dooner examines how treating ourselves like never ending self-improvement projects is a recipe for burnout. We have become unknowingly complicit in perpetuating our own exhaustion because we are treating ourselves like machines. But even phones need to f--king recharge.

Relatable storytelling, sound advice. And just fun.
Revisado: 02-18-22
The ups and downs of the 21st century pressure to be all, while adhering to the socials idea of perfection, is crushing. I am twice Caroline’s age, and face pressures around aging that can easily be added to her pressures to be pretty and perfect all the time. Caroline’s storytelling style is full of humor, wit, sarcasm, self-deprecation and a bit of cynicism. Her narration is honest and animated. (I continue to believe only an autobiographer can truly narrate their story best.) At times, I was on the brink of tears, which were equally induced by compassion for her bad luck, and her cracking wit. Without ever feeling sorry for herself, she tells her story and then offers sound advice on how to navigate the pressures, how to be still, and how important it is for us all to slow down and take stock of who we are and what really matters to each of us as individuals. Highly recommend.

Well written. Highly recommend the audiobook. Will Smith’s abilities as a storyteller are equal to his many other talents. A heartfelt telling of challenges that face us all, on a stage larger than life. Still, I found it relatable. And I have highlighted the many bits of wisdom that I know I will find myself returning to over time. Bravo.

Engrossing Fascinating Based on a real heroine
Revisado: 11-20-21
As with Anastasia, this novel makes me want to run to read everything I can get my hands on about the protagonist, in this instance, Nanci Wake. Set in France during WII, an in-depth look at what the French Resistance was really all about. I knew this was based on a real person but as I read I was so intrigued by the fascinating story and engrossed by the story telling that I truly forgot. No one can tell a story quite like Ariel Lawhon. I can’t wait to see what she gives us next.

Historia
Graham Greene explores corruption and atonement in this penetrating novel set in 1930s Mexico during the era of Communist religious persecutions. As revolutionaries determine to stamp out the evils of the church through violence, the last Roman Catholic priest is on the lam, hunted by a police lieutenant. Despite his own sense of worthlessness—he is a heavy drinker and has fathered an illegitimate child—he is determined to continue to function as a priest until captured.

It's short, so worth a listen
Revisado: 10-28-21
The narrator's voice was not natural for me to listen to so it was a tough start. I kept losing the thread, so I sped it up 1.5x and kept me focused better. I've not read the book, and this is the first time an audio book made me want to read the book, at my own pace, lingering over some sections, scanning others. It was a good story, set in a tumultuous time. Worth a read. Plus, it's Graham Greene. I always enjoy his novels, this just isn't my favorite.

I enjoyed this story, so well written by Greer and performed by Merkerson. A gentle reminder that God is laughing while we make plans.

Historia
There is an obesity epidemic in this country, and poor Black women are particularly stigmatized as "diseased" and a burden on the public health-care system. This is only the most recent incarnation of the fear of fat Black women, which Sabrina Strings shows took root more than 200 years ago.

Dryly presented historical detail

Subject was interesting but I couldn’t listen long at one time because it was delivered in a monotone.
