NARRATER, JEANIE KANALEY, RUINS A GOOD STORY!
Revisado: 03-19-25
I listened to this story because I had listened to "The Dog Across the Lake" in the same series and enjoyed it, and recommend that one. But I could hardly get through this one, because of the narrater. She sounds like a grandmother reading to a child, when she should sound like a young woman. She mispronounces words, puts inappropriate question marks in the middle of sentences, and constantly puts the emphasis on the wrong words in a sentence. I'm not the only one who had this reaction to the narrater.
I let a friend listen to a short piece and then asked what they thought of her. The answer was, " How can you even finish it? That's the worst!"
I would have rated the book higher but the author telegraphed the culprits by making them thoroughly unlikeable, so there were no surprises.
I would recommend other books by this author, only if you read the synopsis and listen to, and like, the preview.

VIRTUAL VOICE ISNOT 4 ME!!!
Revisado: 02-21-25
I really like this series! The dogs and their training are great. I enjoyed the narrater from the other two books and would rather listen to virtual than physically read. But with the accent on wrong syllables, and so many mispronounced words, and the lack of voice change among characters, it was very hard to understand. I am still going to get the next book, regardless of format. I highly recommend this series.

No, no, no! It doesn't matter how many times the Duchess of Trent (The Harlow Hoyden) requests her help with a delicate matter regarding a patent for her sister's invention, Tuppence Templeton will not lend a hand. She has a habit, yes, of coming up with ingenious plans to solve other people's problems, and it is true that she's clever and daring enough to pull off the proposed scheme. But there's no way she's going to confront the arrogant and dismissive Earl of Gage again.

INGENIOUS, FUNNY, THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE!
Revisado: 11-13-24
This is a great series! The timing is superb. Just when things get sad, something hilarious happens. I love strong, brilliant characters, both men and women, and when they find someone who challenges their intellect, supports them, are kind, decent, and have a sense of humor, I'm all in. All of Lynn Messina's Books should come with a warning: Save them for days with lots of chores or lots of time to relax, where you can be plugged into these books from beginning to end because you won't be able to put them down!
A confirmed spinster and happily unentangled bachelor who aren't looking for that special someone because they have set the bar so high they don't expect that person to exist.
In general, the narration was lovely, but the twins' voices seemed ear piercingly high and unrealistic at times. I still thought the narration was great and if Ms. Rayner becomes aware of that, she will move to 5 stars.

The Swim is not one of my usual mysteries featuring former police detective Michael McLaren. It's a prequel novella giving a picture of his life from teenager to the strong man he is today. He's real to me, and I want you to understand him. I want you to understand a man whose need to help others find justice became his incitement in a world like today. He's been through a lot from his ordeal beginning with the "swim", his move from the Force, and his cold cases. He's made enemies, friends, and he has loved and lost. Like many of us.

A "MUST READ" AT ANY POINT IN THE SERIES
Revisado: 11-09-24
I thoroughly enjoyed finding out what brought Mike and Jamie from teenagers to where Mike became a private citizen who helps people by investigating suspicious deaths, and how they became best friends for life. Because Mike doesn't have a license, Jamie is frequently called upon to help and make the arrests.
A beautifully done prequel that is perfect to read at whatever place you are in the series.
Of course, Callum Hale is fabulous. He breathes life into the printed word and makes it seem like you're right there all the time.
I would love to see this become a TV series.
Thank you to the author for gifting me this audiobook. This is my honest and candid review.

Way too preachy and same theme as last book
Revisado: 10-04-24
Marriage of strangers who don’t trust each other with their secrets. Same theme as the first book in series. Constant sermonizing, as before. Very fine writer who needs to get out of the pulpit and find a new theme. Narrater is very good, but with a very pronounced accent which is distracting.Very good with men’s and women’s voices.

HIESTAND & HALE -THE PERFECT MYSTERY COMBO!
Revisado: 06-11-24
Another fabulous mystery, this time set in modern Scotland, but on a beautiful old estate!
An intricate plot, a little "closed door" romance, and a great cast, all brilliantly brought to life by the
Master Narrator, and Man of a thousand voices and accents, Callum Hale. Every voice is distinctly different from any other. He has a marvelous repertoire of women's voices as well as men's.
I enjoy that so much because Ms. Hiestand has worked tirelessly to people her mysteries with lots of personality, and only a great narrater can can breathe so much life into the book that you feel like you're listening to a great movie.
The author also does a great job of bringing you up date on the characters, whether it's been a while since you read the last book, or even if this is your first foray into the series.
The best part is that Hiestand and Hale will keep you guessing all the way to the end with this terrific plot.
As usual, I loved it and can't wait 'till the next one.

Former police detective Michael McLaren is at the home of his lady friend, Melanie. The house is sold, the removal van is booked. All that is left is to help her pack her belongings for her move to his village. But the laborious task is interrupted when one of Melanie’s neighbors asks McLaren to investigate the circumstances of her parents’ murders. McLaren’s reluctance to take it on and abandon Melanie appears to be solved when his best mate, Jamie, steps in to help with the packing. It’s not the easy investigation McLaren was hoping for, however.

ANOTHER GREAT "NOT-TO-BE-MISSED" MCLAREN MYSTERY❣️
Revisado: 05-25-24
What a treat! I love how McLaren and Jamie work together and support each other as the great friends they are, to solve complicated mysteries. The romance remains in the background and behind closed doors, and while it adds color and texture to the story, Ms. Hiestand always maintains a balance and keeps the mystery firmly front and center.
The complexity of the cases are always fun to try to figure out right up to the end. None of the knowing whodunnit by chapter 4!
Callum Hale makes you feel like you're right there the whole time, or, at least, watching a movie peopled by a full cast! There is none better!
The best part of this series is that you can start with any book and be assured that the author will bring you up to date in a quick, no-nonsense way.
The author and the narrater are so good together, that it really is a case of 1+1=3.
Don't miss this wonderful audio!

First, there was a trunk. Inside the trunk was an egg, and inside the egg was…well, it certainly was not a chicken. Miss Mildred Percy, former wallflower and current adventurer, is now in charge of a dragon. Along with Mr. Wiggan and Mrs. Babbinton—our stalwart companions from the first volume of Miss Percy’s adventures—she embarks on a journey across Wales, in search of the mysterious Nyth y Ddraig, or Nest of Dragons. But traveling with a young dragon in an unfamiliar land proves more difficult than anticipated.

LOVE THIS SERIES AND WANT MANY MORE ADVENTURES !
Revisado: 03-23-24
This has to be one of the most memorable series that my ears have ever read! Zara Ramm has jumped onto my short list of all time favorite narraters. Her reading adds so much to the fabulous storytelling and word crafting that is the unique voice of Quenby Olson.
I wish Quenby would stop being waylaid by the mundanity of such tasks as eating, sleeping,
and living her daily life, and just get on with publishing book #3, 4, 5, etc.
All that aside, She does a masterful job of ending one adventure, while creating excitement for the next.
These are books that have been purposely crafted without inappropriate language or risqué scenes so that they could be read to children, or read by preteens, or teens, yet are mature enough to hold the interest of an adult.
BRAVA!

Miss Mildred Percy is a spinster. She does not dance, she has long stopped dreaming, and she certainly does not have adventures. That is, until her great uncle has the audacity to leave her an inheritance, one that includes a dragon’s egg. The egg—as eggs are wont to do—decides to hatch, and Miss Mildred Percy is suddenly thrust out of the role of “spinster and general wallflower” and into the unprecedented position of “spinster and keeper of dragons.” But England has not seen a dragon since…well, ever.

HILARIOUS! LOVERS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE REJOICE!
Revisado: 03-23-24
I don't know when I have laughed so uproariously at the actual turns of phrases in a book. The story telling itself is even better than the great story.
This is a wonderful heartfelt series that can be read with children who have developed a love of language.
The author goes to great lengths to make that possible by omitting inappropriate words and scenes.
Zara Ramm is as wonderful a narrater as one could ever hope for and made me feel as if the author, herself were reading the book to me.
I have already acquired and listened to the next book, and if the author reads this, I am pleading for book #3 to be recorded by Audible, post haste!

Playing a mystery game seems the perfect way to celebrate Jamie Kydd’s promotion to detective sergeant rank. But the game turns real when a body turns up in the pretend crime scene. Perhaps worse than spoiling the party, the corpse is someone Jamie knows. Even though the police take on the case, Jamie asks his friend, former police detective Michael McLaren, to also investigate—concerned that the victim’s criminal past may dampen the Constabulary’s usual fervor to nab his killer. If the victim’s burglary partner, ex-wife, or childhood friend didn’t kill Dan, who did?

GLUED !! DESERVES ALL ITS KUDOS!!!
Revisado: 02-16-24
This book got the Best Book 2020- 5 Stars Winner and 2022 Best Audiobook and Best Audiobook Narrater awards!
Callum Hale embodied Michael and Jamie and the rest of the characters so well that I forgot, at times, that it wasn't a full cast. He does just as good a job with women's voices, which is a rare treat! I will be looking for more books from him. His awards are very richly deserved.
Now about the book - all of the books in the series are stand alone books. This is McLaren book 12 and still I didn't feel as though I had missed anything by starting with this one. (Sometimes you feel like you walked into the middle of a double feature and you're lost.) I was riveted to it from beginning to end, even while preparing meals and doing other chores with my earbuds in. I simply couldn't stop for anything.
I often know "who done it" very early on, but this ending came as a surprise and a real treat. I love when that happens!
I love cozy mysteries and this one was particularly special.
Ms. Hiestand gifted me this book without any expectations that I would review it. She was just being really nice when I wrote to ask her if she did audiobooks. ( Having temporary vision trouble, I must have misspelled her name and couldn't find any on Audible, of which there are actually several.)
I think you will be thrilled with any of her books whose plot description suits your fancy. She deserves every award
her writing has garnered!
