I couldn’t stop listening to this entire series and was enthralled. It’s a completely different universe from Ms. Carriger’s Custard Protocol or Finishing School series but no less immersive. Godsong in this series is like kpop crossed with religion, and the secret of the aliens behind it slowly unfolds but is not (IMO) a bad one. Love the characters and narrator’s skill creating unique voices for each one, 100% recommend.

Unbearably painful to listen to this narrator

The narrator made it impossible to finish this story. I was so disappointed. She sounds robotic, doesn’t differentiate voices between characters and has an odd way of ending sentences on a breathless note. I’m so glad this is in the Plus catalogue and that I don’t need to request a refund. If you’re going to pay or use a credit for this audiobook, listen to the sample and be sure you can stomach the narration before you commit!

I almost never review titles but this book contained a scene that was so shocking I had to post a review to warn others considering reading/listening that might be bothered by the same thing. Spoiler ahead.

First, I love the narrator. Rosalyn Landor has narrated multiple Lisa Kleypas books and she does a flawless job creating different voices for each character and never detracts (or distracts!) from the story with incorrect pronunciation.

HOWEVER, (SPOILER!!) there is a scene where the main female character takes advantage of her new husband when he is too drunk to consent. For background, before they married, he told her he “can’t” have children. She married him anyway, even though she’s from a huge, happy family, always thought she would have a large family of her own one day and dearly wants children. Just before this troubling scene they’d had a huge fight when she realizes it’s not that he “can’t” have children, it’s that he “won’t,” for reasons he refuses to discuss (essentially, due to his childhood trauma). After the fight he goes drinking and comes home so drunk he’s stumbling. When she helps him to bed, she seduces him, while he’s still drunk, and refuses to let him pull out before his climax. WHAT. THE. HELL. Yes his lie to her made her rightfully angry but that in NO WAY justifies what she did. Imagine if their genders were reversed. Depending where you are in the world today, this behavior (like “stealthing”) is criminal, rape-adjacent, or even outright rape, and is definitely reproductive coercion. What’s even worse is how this scene is treated afterward. She has little remorse and even though he’s immediately angry and they separate for a time, there’s no real reckoning or growth or real discussion of how deeply wrong that was. I think there would have been better ways to move the plot forward. She would have done better to maintain a separation or leave the marriage altogether after finding out he lied, despite the scandal a divorce would cause, if they were at a complete impasse on the issue. I found this scene and its treatment afterward so disturbing it made it very hard to listen to the rest of the book. I’m regretting my purchase of the second book in the series at the same time as the first.

Remember the robotic voice feature on the Kindle for reading books aloud? This narrator reminds me of that when voicing the male characters in a flat robotic delivery, especially Darcy. I can’t even tell you if the story is somewhat decent since the narration is so unbearable I gave up by Chapter 7.

The narrator did a great job but the story was on definitely on the light, insubstantial side and I would not have used a credit on it. The main character finds it’s suddenly “raining men” including but not limited to dealing with her handsome boss and the even handsomer “shark.” It couldn’t be more obvious which is the better man (really, he’s practically too perfect to be real). The main character’s inner dialogue also sounded pretty immature for an Ivy League grad at the pinnacle of her high powered career.

I was disappointed by the convenient treatment of — SPOILER AHEAD — her teenage daughter’s pregnancy. This part struck me as requiring suspension of disbelief more than any other part of the book and that’s saying something for a romance. The daughter didn’t have to make a decision and it was cheap to sidestep the issue. In fairness that would be expecting too much for the scope of this story, which is light and fluffy.

I love this series, and Dr. Gibson's story is riveting. The author is taking a detour from the Ravenel sisters themselves with this book and the next, but it's self explanatory how the ending of the prior book dovetails into the plot of this one. I feel as though I learn new historical details in each book which adds a necessary touch of authenticity to the Victorian setting. I'm looking forward to West's story, but must say I'm getting impatient for Cassandra's HEA!! I hope Cassandra's book comes out within the next year!

I found the series when the first book was in a sale, and am so glad I downloaded it. The third book sees Tristan and Cécile saving the world from theIr enemies, and the growth both undergo throughout the series feels believable and touching. I’m not going to spoil it but the way the book ends felt really painfully cruel at first, then fitting. One small issue — I don’t read a ton of YA books but remember how people thought it was weird details of Edward and Bella’s sex life together is decorously left out, while other scenes are given in explicit detail (like the gruesome birth or violent fight deaths). This author did the same thing in book 2 and 3. I prefer well written romance scenes being included.
