This is a little known story about a remarkable woman whose intelligence and skill enabled her to become the most powerful woman in India, and to rule for decades, overseeing a peaceful and flourishing century. Her love of art and architecture established an environment that would lead to the Taj Mahal and the Mugal style India is world renown for.

The main thing I took away was the total lack of clarity she had when joining the military and the possibility that anyone can be deployed. Its great that she survived, and was able to come to terms with her experience. Its sad the politics in the military is unwilling to provide the support it owes the innocents it lures into service, and then ignores. I am sure its better and worse in other countries. I wish her the best for the future.

This is realy an autobiography of the author told against the background of Merton's writings. Its OK, but not particularly informative. It reflects the struggles of a woman growing up in a somewhat confusing America and trying to make sense of it.

Whether its Elon Musk, Donald Trump or James Whitfield, people who worship the image of the man at the cost of looking at the ego of the man, lose the ability to see reality as distinct from idolatry. The author says that no more important man ever lived than Whitfield in promoting the church. There is no doubt that James was a dedicated and driven missionary, and a man gifted with a strong desire to promote his beliefs. The author skips over the fact that James Whitfield was very instrumental in bringing slavery to the state of Georgia, as it would benefit his Orphanage, which he saw as a place to indoctrinate young people with his belief system. While he did take in children of color, he would not have been able to educate them in anything other than religious studies as the law prevented teaching slaves life skills, and such children would have been the property of the orphanage, which he turned over at the time of his death. People may claim this was the times, but his good friend Wesley was a staunch anti slaver and argued with Whitfield against his interests in slaves. In addition, Whitfield is celebrated as being the great contrarian who went against the evils of his times, but somehow overlooked slavery, which was the greatest evil in the colonies. His orphanage eventually failed, but the damage he did to the lives of the countless people he affected by bringing slavery to the state, and those owned by the orphanage cannot and should not be overlooked. While Jesus lived in far more prejudiced times, and preached to far fewer, his impact was far greater, because his message was one of love and the brotherhood of mankind, and not the dogma of a self appointed savior who deemed the results more important than the method. Alas he failed to take the advice of the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland who said, "how you get there is where you will arrive". This is where Whitfield ended up, with a big stain on his achievements. The author cannot change this fact no matter how much a fan boy he is.

This short book is definitely worth a listen for those interested in the roots of prayer and religion, and what it means to connect with God. Wisdom is the piece that bridges the terminal with the eternal, and its meaning is often missed. Cynthia brings this to life in her usual precise manner

While Calvin was a great scholar and was driven to spread the christian faith is well presented in this book. The fact that Calvin was not willing to accept teachings contrary to his faith is glossed over and in ways justified, because of all his good work. The author goes along with this argument. Christianity is stained with the blood of many that disagreed with its teachings, and this cannot be overlooked as its not part of the teachings of its founder (Christ did not condemn those that he disagreed with). This book tries to gloss over the fact that Calvin argued a case against a man whose teachings he disagreed with, the result of which the man was put to death. This fact cannot be ignored or offset against the perceived good he did. The author tries to make the excuse for this, in that the times were hard, but overlooks the fact the times were just as hard 2000 years ago. The facts should be presented as they are, and Calvin should be held accountable, if he is to be given credit for his achievements. No amount of evangelism justifies the execution of those that hold counter beliefs, if one is to preach love and forgiveness.

Interesting approach to the story of St Thomas

This is a book from a different time when a sense of superiority existed in England, Britain was supreme, but rotting from the inside, and Chesterton was looking for answers. In today's understanding, the story of St Thomas has expanded, and Chesterton may be seen as a bit limiting, St Thomas continues to be a great mind, while empire is gone.

Good, but suffers from its limited perspective

This book is written from the perspective of an upper middle clas person from India, and how they see the world. This is not a criticism, but is useful in assessing the details of the book, as it claims to represent a broad segment of society, which is not quite accurate. It misses out on the individualism, or isolation of some western people that grow up feeling somewhat lonely, as this is not a common occurrence in extended family oriented India, Also gender roles in India are different from other parts of the world, so a young person growing up in another country may have a different perspective than whats presented here. Even within India, the author has a different perspective, as she grew up in a somewhat educated and financially stable family , where traditions and roles are established. A large portion of India is not like this, so the idea of young people getting married and setting up a house is not normal, and parents and extended families often live in the same room. Tradition and rules are often quite different from established ideology and often necessity trumps tradition. Its an interesting perspective, but just one of many, so see it as a part, and not the whole.

What a crock of crap, but very entertaining. Buyer beware. It is sort of an Arabian nights of fantasy of a man deeply in need of finding a girl to spend the night.

It's obvious this author promotes stereotypes. It's more of an anti modi, pro colonialism rant. The author forgets that india represented more than 25% of global GDP prior to the British Rule, and 2.5% at the end of its rule. India was prevented from participation in the industrial age to promote British industrialization. The 171 famines during British rule is more than the total number of famines prior to the british, and since the British left, there has not been a single famine, despite the population growing 3x. As for cast, the author is either ignorant or chooses to ignore the criminal tribes act enacted by the British that condemned 250 million Indians to convict status, and ripe for indentured slavery in the empire, and ignores the British aristocratic cast system. The author seems to have judged the carnage that the British left in india after looting all it could get to promote it's wars of self righteous greed and then associated the entire history of the subcontinent to this stereotype. Worthless and nothing to do with Gandhi other than click bait. And as for what's left of the British empire today - It has become a stain in the history books, with all but a few rocks off the coast of Argentina choosing to remain in the great Empire
