Historia
When reclusive war poet Olivia Marlowe and her half-brother, Nicholas Cheney, die together in their ancestral home on the Cornish coast, it looks like suicide. The grieving relatives gather together to discuss the fate of Barcombe Hall, when another shocking death occurs. Inspector Rutledge, who is still shell-shocked from his experiences in the Great War, is sent from Scotland Yard to investigate. Rutledge is soon convinced that the answers to this baffling case lie within the family’s secret history.

My favorite mystery novel. Perfect!
Revisado: 02-26-25
A no nonsense, tough, thoroughly human investigator who has grit and determination, tempered by wisdom, occasional self-doubt, and a ghostly side-kick that exists only in his mind. It's not too hard to follow who the players are, the settings are classic, and the pacing is very steady and very British. Echoes of Doyle and Christie in the writing and setting, but Inspector Ian Rutledge is his own man. Set in immediate post-WW1 Britian. A seaside family manor, haunted moors, a rocky coastline, and family secrets which smolder under many an untimely family death...

Fun insights, great first novel
Revisado: 10-15-24
I remember reading this novel shortly after it had come out, when I was in early high school in the early '80s. This book was the gateway which led me forward to the Lord of the Rings and a lifelong love for the fantasy genre. It was incredibly enjoyable to listen through the novel which had started it all, and it was fun to periodically listen to the author's insights and reactions. I read several of the Shannara novels back in the day, and since discovering this on Audible I've gone on to listen to all of the Shannara books - I only have four left until I've completed the entire series. Bravo! Terry, your life's work has been a blessing in my life and the lives of my wife and children.

Historia
It is the fall of 1950. The Marines have made a pivotal breakthrough at Inchon, but a roller coaster awaits them. The bit in his teeth, Douglas MacArthur is intent on surging across the 38th parallel toward the Yalu River, where he is certain no Chinese are waiting for him, while Major Ken McCoy, operating undercover, hears a different story entirely, and is just as intent on nailing down the truth before it is too late.

Historia
Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches—but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined.

A triumph. Hunts, spiritual reality & modern SJWs
Revisado: 01-16-24
This book ties it all together. The witch hunts, the founding, spiritual reality and a cautionary note near the end on how modern SJW political correctness has become the new religion, the new puritanism, seeking to hang those who oppose it.
I'd give this book six stars, if I could.

Love that the story now shows modern policing
Revisado: 11-03-23
I'm glad W.E.B. transported the timeline forward 30 years to show police work in the modern era while keeping the same characters. Patrick G. Lawlor's reading is excellent and captures the essence of the characters well. And W.E.B. triumphs here by being able to show the humanity and weaknesses of the main hero without destroying or discrediting him, something Ian Fleming failed miserably trying to do with his James Bond character in those books.

Historia
The true story of the Earp brothers, Doc Holliday, and the famous Battle at the OK Corral, by the New York Times best-selling author of Dodge City and Wild Bill. On the afternoon of October 26, 1881, nine men clashed in what would be known as the most famous shootout in American frontier history. Thirty bullets were exchanged in 30 seconds, killing three men and wounding three others. The fight sprang forth from a tense, hot summer.

The true story of the taming of the American West
Revisado: 07-12-23
This well researched book - and in the printed version well footnoted - tells the truth of what happened in Tombstone, from post-civil war politics to an election stolen by ballot box stuffing, to selective law enforcement by one political party, to smash and grabs of business' and merchants' assets, to an outlaws' false defense of "hands up don't shoot" after law enforcement had to defend themselves, to false legal charges and political targeting of people threatening to expose corruption. The same political parties and sides which were involved then are involved now, in the exact same situations. Nothing has really changed much in 140 years of American politics. One side is still lawless, one side still stands for law and order.

Historia
Americans are justly proud of the role the United States played in liberating Europe from Nazi tyranny. For many years, we have celebrated the courage of the Allied soldiers, sailors, and aircrews who defeated Hitler's regime and restored freedom to the continent. But in recounting the heroism of the "greatest generation," Americans often overlook the wartime experiences of European people themselves - the very people for whom the war was fought

Must listening and necessary history
Revisado: 06-01-23
First of all William I. Hitchcock is always a pleasure to listen to. His works are thoroughly researched, generally objective and he's a great writer. Second, this history of the injuries and atrocities suffered on all sides should be required reading for military leaders in the U.S. That said, particularly at the beginning of the book and again at the very end Hitchcock does some armchair quarterbacking - sincerely trying to summarize and interpret the information - which seems a bit unreasonable. The allied leaders were trying to defeat the forces of the axis' various national-level socialisms and the victory was not at all guaranteed. And in retrospect leadership for the axis side did come from a relatively small group of socialist political and military leaders. I would have enjoyed the book more if Hitchcock could have limited his introduction and summaries to facts. Still, 4 1/2 stars. A brilliant read and necessary history.

Historia
In November 1964, Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara went to the Congo with two hundred men, intent on making it his first step in taking over Africa and South America. He failed, thanks in large part to the efforts of an intrepid band of Green Berets. Licking his wounds, he retreated to Cuba to recruit more men and try the same thing in Bolivia. He failed there, too. In fact, he died there, and thus, despite his incompetence, became a glorious martyr to the cause. But who was trying to kill him, really - and who was trying to keep him alive?

A rushed and disappointing conclusion
Revisado: 04-10-23
The book borrows whole sections from previous novels in the series and then takes a quick and arbitrary turn where several long term characters get killed off and the central character of the series - Craig Lowell - gets professionally screwed and leaves the military. The story seems to have been cobbled from several writing ideas from author Griffin and then thrown together over the course of a week or two, as if Griffin had already moved on to another project and a sudden publishing deadline came up. It's BS that Lowell doesn't get to keep his career and the brotherhood is essentially broken. It goes against everything the first eight novels had built up. The characters deserved much better.

Great story but hard to follow voice, production
Revisado: 01-11-23
I love Terry Brooks and his books are all five stars in my opinion. However the narrator here uses one of only three or four voices for every character in the books, and sometimes switches which one he's using for a given character, so I constantly found myself no knowing who was talking. And the breaks in the text aren't breaks in the production, so it always sounds as if the reader is reading the next sentence when sometimes it's the beginning of an entirely different section. It was nearly impossible to follow what was happening.
Terry please have the Heritage of Shannara books on Audible re-recorded and professionally produced!
