Historia
For the last 100,000 years, we Sapiens have accumulated enormous power. But despite all our discoveries, inventions, and conquests, we now find ourselves in an existential crisis. The world is on the verge of ecological collapse. Misinformation abounds. And we are rushing headlong into the age of AI—a new information network that threatens to annihilate us. For all that we have accomplished, why are we so self-destructive? Nexus looks through the long lens of human history to consider how the flow of information has shaped us, and our world.

A realistic view of our potential future with the continued and unregulated development of technology.

I liked how the positive and negative outcomes were skillfully and thoughtfully presented. Disturbingly, I wonder how a general population makes their voices heard through what appears to be an inevitable outcome with extrapolating and disastrous results, and if enough regular humans are capable of even gasping the possibilities. Yikes!

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Phenomenal writing, as usual. It was so gripping I just kissed the rest of my life goodbye until I finished it. The reader was superb- loved it all!

Horrible narration
Revisado: 05-31-24
It was difficult for me to continue due to the narration. Couldn’t stand it. I found it impossible to become engaged with the characters- they simply weren’t likable to me because they sounded so superficial and shallow. The story itself may have been okay but I finally turned it off because I couldn’t get beyond the annoying voices. I generally like Hannah’s writing style, but this one- not for me.

Powerful!
Revisado: 05-14-24
I loved the realistic view of a terrible time. I did not serve, but my husband was a Navy pilot, who served in Vietnam Nam for two tours. He was one of the lucky ones who came home, although several close friends did not.
It was powerful to have an adult perspective of that time so well executed in literary form, and to find that it was just as devastating and wrenching as I remember.
I loved every single thing about this book. And the reader was superb. I had to put it down countless times to go get a tissue. Thank you, Kristen Hannah.

Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Egan’s most compelling yet.
Revisado: 04-08-23
This is Timothy Egan’s true story of one of the most hidden but tumultuous periods in America’s history. His profound insights and extensive research make this a “must read” for anyone who wonders how we, as a nation, arrived at the point we are today. As always, his writing is a joy to read, in spite of the painful subject matter. Loved it.

Historia
In 1692, Bridget Bishop was hanged as a witch. Two hundred years later, her legacy lives on in the scions of two very different lines: one dedicated to using their powers to heal and help women in need; the other, determined to grasp power for themselves by whatever means necessary. This clash will play out in the fate of Annis, a young woman in Gilded Age New York who finds herself a pawn in the family struggle for supremacy. She'll need to claim her own power to save herself - and resist succumbing to the darkness that threatens to overcome them all.

HORRIBLE Narration
Revisado: 04-24-21
I finally had to give up. The narrator's robotic monotone voice for several characters finally tipped me over, although I was already poised to quit at that point. She has a knack for losing track of her accents and making her lessor or secondary characters sound ignorant and/or evil. Her characterization of several characters made it almost impossible to keep people and conversations straight, and although I liked the book, I found that I was starting to focus on the fingernails-on-the-blackboard aspect of reader. Aghhhhh. I ordered the book instead.

I found the music so distracting and unfitting to what was happening that I couldn’t even get through the book.
Because Michael Connelly is one of my favorites, I bought the print version, which I’m finally able to enjoy.

A Home Run (Again)
Revisado: 06-08-16
Where does Something More rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Just when I think I've heard all of the self-help key points I pick up another Sarah BB book and discover that she has, once again, found the missing link for which I've been waiting all these years. I truly love her books, and again, she doesn't disappoint. Such insight! Such empowerment! I always sigh when I read the last page, feeling as though I'm saying goodbye to the person who knows me best.
