Historia

AI narrator not good
Revisado: 01-02-24
While the virtual narrator’s voice sounded realistic there was no correlation between the events being read and the unvarying tone of the narrator. Slightly better than a monotonous drone I will need to be more careful and avoid virtual narrators in the future. It is hard to realistically evaluate the story as the whole time I listed there was a disconnect between tales of mine explosions and a light social female voice.

Too much emphasis on sex
Revisado: 12-29-23
Sexual attraction and speculation of romance between nearly everyone the protagonist meets vs the actual murder. What does knowing the size of the protagonist genitalia really contribute to story?

Not true to character
Revisado: 11-02-22
This “new” Poirot’ feels too contrived and not anything like the original. Like some of the badly acted Christie movie adaptations the character and plot are distorted images of the Christie originals. Some continuations of classic mystery character have rung true but not in this book.

Poor performance
Revisado: 12-04-20
Of all the different manifestations of this story, this was the worst. Zaphod’s accent seems like it comes from the Bronx. Seeing as the book derives from a radio play, a single narrator in multi-voice maybe entirely inadequate to the story. But this particular narrator is not up to the task.

Historia
When The Cookie Jar becomes the setting of a star-studded TV special about movies filmed in Minnesota, Hannah hopes to shine the spotlight on her bakery - not the unsavory scandal swirling around her personal life. But that’s practically impossible with a disturbing visit from the shifty character she once believed was her one and only love, a group of bodyguards following her every move, and a murder victim in her bedroom.

Jumped the Shark
Revisado: 11-20-20
I've read every book in the series with enjoyment as the writing is generally good but this time the plot has really gone off the rails. Ever since the Ross character was introduced the story lines involving him have gotten so far fetched that even the generally good character development couldn't save it.

Historia
In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

Historia
P. D. James meets E. L. James in Under a Silent Moon, this first novel in an exciting British crime series-a blend of literary suspense and captivating thriller that introduces formidable Detective Chief Inspector Louisa Smith - from suspense talent Elizabeth Haynes, author of the best-selling Into the Darkest Corner. In the crisp, early hours of an autumn morning, the police are called to investigate two deaths. The first is a suspected murder at a farm on the outskirts of a small village. A beautiful young woman has been found dead, her cottage drenched with blood.

Shows Promise
Revisado: 06-20-20
My biggest problem is with the book and narration is what feels like interruptions in the flow when they start reading from police reports, especially the constant repeating of "age of interviewee if under the age of 18" with the responseof"over 18". Much of the reasons onably sounds stiff and stilted especially when reading the police reports.

Historia
Against all odds we have made it into the last half of the 1990s. The Cold War looks solved, Arabs and Jews are talking, confrontation is on the wane. In this new harmony, one discord - what becomes of unemployed terrorists? You can bet they aren't going to retire quietly. Shunned by the Soviets, isolated by Middle Eastern realignment, one cadre hits on a scheme to jump-start the war machine. It's brilliant in its simplicity. With a single act they bring the world to nuclear boil. Jack Ryan and Dan Murray sweat to defuse a cataclysmic response.

Well written and expertly performed. I could not anticipate most of the turns of plot which made it all the more riveting.
I regret paying any heed to some reviewer who panned the book. Otherwise I would have read it 18 years ago. And I should have read it when published.

Why was this in the mystery category?
Revisado: 07-20-18
Long on chapter development but it loses the plot little of it as there was with too many coincidences and flat out improbable events with an ending so abrupt all I could think was WTF. Narrator seemed to drone. Returned it. And can’t believe I listened to it as long as I did.

Why is this listed under Mystery?
Revisado: 04-10-16
What would have made The Last Stop better?
Putting it in a different category, seriously after an hour into the narration there wasn't a hint of mystery. If you like a rambling character filled novel you might enjoy it but whoever placed it in the mystery category did it a grave disservice.
Has The Last Stop turned you off from other books in this genre?
I do not understand why Amazon/Audible placed this in the mystery category. I'll admit that I couldn't stick it through the entire book but unless you enjoy reading the welcome to a retirement community letter and their newsletter of events or rather non-events like the senior who likes to sunbathe nude or the rambling about whether to get a resident cat to go along with the resident English Mastiff. Maybe somewhere over half way into the book something happens but I never made it that far.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Rozanne Devine?
I have no problems with the narrator, it is her material that I fault.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Last Stop?
Didn't finish it so couldn't say.
Any additional comments?
This is another in what is getting to be a long list of books that are placed in the mystery genre that don't belong in it. As a general story of folks in a retirement community it is mildly amusing but there is nothing in it that conforms to the mystery genre.
