One of the best books I have read this year
Revisado: 09-09-21
Obviously, the stories in this book vary in quality, but they are mostly gripping and beautiful. I felt about four of the stories were true masterpieces and I enjoyed them tremendously. The most gripping and beautiful story is the title name sake, 'the paper menagerie' which in my opinion is one of the best stories I have EVER read. It took my breath away and my mind froze for a good while. It left an imprint on my mind that I will not forget. Beautifully done. Thank you.

Historia
Joe Kenda investigated 387 murder cases during his 23 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department and solved almost all of them. And he is ready to detail the cases that are too gruesome to air on television, cases that still haunt him, and the few cases where the killer got away. These cases are horrifyingly real, and the detail is so mesmerizing you won't be able to turn it off.

An old man bragging about his good life
Revisado: 09-09-21
I found this book to be mostly a combination of crime porn mixed with an old man bragging about his good work, good family, and good life. I did this and I did that, and my son is this and my daughter is that, and my wife is smart, and we had a great life, blah blah.
To be fair, it was my own fault, picking up this book. I should have known this by the way the title of the book is phrased. "I will find you". i.e. I am good, I do good work and I can do this and I can do that... a lot of bragging, but little to learn from the stories.
If you like hearing old people telling you stories about their glorious past life, this is for you. Otherwise, skip it and read something more educational.

Historia
Pontzer's groundbreaking studies with hunter-gatherer tribes show how exercise doesn't increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level. This was a brilliant evolutionary strategy to survive in times of famine. Now it seems to doom us to obesity. The good news is we can lose weight, but we need to cut calories. Refuting such weight-loss hype as paleo, keto, anti-gluten, anti-grain, and even vegan, Pontzer discusses how all diets succeed or fail: For shedding pounds, a calorie is a calorie.

Narrator could be better.
Revisado: 07-15-21
The narrator narrates as if he is doing a TV commercial. So much commercial enthusiasm goes into the work. All that's missing is the dramatic music. :D

Historia
In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.

Good contents, poor performance
Revisado: 01-08-21
This an excellent book by Mr. Hitchens. Unfortunately, the author made the mistake of reading the book himself for the audible. His voice has ups and downs, and it is virtually impossible to listen to it and immerse in the book, specially when you are in your car driving, as I often am. I wish they would have a professional narrator read the book and re-record it. Although I feel this is a must read for everyone, but not in the audible format.

Historia
Maverick thinker Nassim Nicholas Taleb had an illustrious career on Wall Street before turning his focus to his black swan theory. Not all swans are white, and not all events, no matter what the experts think, are predictable. Taleb shows that black swans, like 9/11, cannot be foreseen and have an immeasurable impact on the world.

good book, but a lot of unnecessary rant.
Revisado: 03-05-18
This would have been a better book if it was devoid of nonstop ranting against everyone the author does not agree with, and that is pretty much everyone in the academia and scientific community. Rant rant rant.... it gets boring. Overall, the message of the book is, however, clearly valid.

Historia
In this remarkably human portrait of one of the 20th century's most complicated personalities, author Andrew Scott Cooper traces Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's life from childhood through his ascension to the throne in 1941. He highlights the turbulence of the postwar era, during which the shah survived assassination attempts and coup plots to build a modern, pro-Western state and launch Iran onto the world stage as one of the world's top five powers.

History relived, good account of what happened.
Revisado: 09-26-16
I felt this was a reasonably good account of what historically happened. Overall a good book. But, the imitation of people's accent by the narrator was over the top and distracting. I would have much preferred it if it was read normally without the accent imitations.

Historia
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, and then to Kenya....
