Historia
It took all of 30 seconds for two shots to bring the world of Margaret Tabaaha crashing down around her. After losing her husband in Afghanistan during the first year of Operation Enduring Freedom, her two sons were all that she had left. Now they had been taken from her violently, deliberately, plunging her into a whiskey bottle and stripping away her reason for living.

I liked most of it.
Revisado: 10-02-24
This is the second book I have read in this series. I like most of it. BUT, there are some rather graphic scenes and and some misogynistic horn dog descriptions that are completely unnecessary and rather offensive. Much worse in the first book, but not gone in this one. I’m not sure if the author thinks that women won’t read these books, only men would read them, or what? I had a little trouble following the timelines, also. But, I love the Navajo stories about their beliefs, those are beautiful. I’d recommend the book, just speed past the gross bits.

Virtual narration sucks.
Revisado: 01-28-24
The story would have been much better with a real person doing the narration. One who would know the different pronunciations of words like lives and leads, which have completely different meanings depending on use. The virtual voice had no idea what it was reading, so no difference between men and women, happy or sad, angry and curious. The story deserved an actual person/actor reading it. I would have liked it more with an actual narrator.
As for the story, it was a little preachy Christian, a little too conspiracist, and a little too much unnecessary hitting, or threatening to punch someone. A few of the stories weren’t really fleshed out enough, not giving much background or reason for actions.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but unless they get a person to narrate, I would not recommend it.

Historia
Okay, so I'm in trouble. Big trouble. I'm broke. Worse, my boyfriend of five years just dumped me. What do I do? I move in with my three eccentric aunts in their family home, Davenport House. Sounds exciting, only this massive farmhouse likes to eat men. If I were a regular human, I would have run out screaming like a banshee. As a witch - I do absolutely nothing. Hey, maybe they deserved it? I'm back in Hollow Cove, the flamboyant paranormal community, where nymphs, werewolves, trolls, shifters, witches, and other paranormals live comfortable lives away from prying human eyes.

Lead character drove me nuts. I doubt if she could get dressed without a self-doubting diatribe. And the narration was overdone, exhausting to listen to her.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Good story, bad narrator.
Revisado: 08-06-20
Story was good, a female Bosch. But. the narrator was awful. She just read out loud, no change in her voice from female to male, lack of inflection, wrong emphasis on multi-syllabic words, very monotonal. A bad narration. I still recommend the book, listening wasn't annoying, just boring. If the story wasn't interesting, I'd have stopped listening.

Cliffhanger!!
Revisado: 06-21-20
Story would be great if it had an ending! Buy the next book to find out what happens to everyone. Aargh!! I hate it when authors or publishers do this. Since the book is incomplete, I won't give it full marks. I'm so annoyed, I doubt I will continue to the next book.

The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Not Worth the Time
Revisado: 06-17-20
It was an interesting premise, but didn't do the much needed follow through. Too many threads, or branches, that didn't resolve. Such long and drawn out lead ins, and then the anticlimactic big event. And the ending, what a disappointment. All of those threads, just get tied up in one knot, with very little explanation or clarification. If only I could express my disgust at the author for not having a clue as to how important an ending is, especially for a book this long. It's not even a cliff-hanger, or a teaser for a second book. It just stops. So not worth the time.

Revisado: 06-10-20
A magical story about a young boy's life. There are laugh out loud moments, scary pieces, some sad spots, and terribly tragic bits. All of them thought provoking, and many indelibly burned into my heart. This will be a book I will read again, because I can't resist its mystical pull.

Homicide detective Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain the dreams he keeps having - dreams that mirror, with impossible accuracy, the gruesome serial murders taking place all over San Francisco? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him - not disgust, not horror, but excitement? As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence 'Pookie' Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem.

Cue the ominous music, AGAIN!
Revisado: 05-28-20
This book is a long read/listen, and most of the time I enjoy that. The author did a great job with character development. I would have liked a bit more backstory on the secondary character, who for me, steals the show.
The narrator did a wonderful job, lots of different characters, and each one had a distinctive sound.
I thought the ending was rushed. All of that leadup, and then it wraps up in such a moment. Basically, it's a quick promo for the next book. Not sure I'm that interested.
The most annoying thing about this audiobook is the ominous music that is so over used. I don't know how much time the music actually adds to the length, but it seemed like a lot. The story has enough suspense, it doesn't need the Jaws-like notes of impending doom at the end of every paragraph. Producer remember, a little goes a long way.

Details are important, do your research.
Revisado: 12-06-19
I would think a crime novelist would know the difference between a shotgun and a rifle. One uses a shotgun to shoot skeet, not a rifle. There is no such thing as a 20 gauge rifle, that would be a shotgun. Rifles use cartridges and shotguns use shells. End of lesson.

Historia
Dracula. A name of horror, depravity and the darkest sensuality.Yet the real Dracula was just as alluring, just as terrifying, his tale not one of a monster but of a man and a contradiction. For the one they called ‘The Devil’s Son’ was both tyrant and lawgiver, crusader and mass slaughterer, torturer and hero, lover and murderer. Vlad: The Last Confession spins legend and facts together into a monumental novel of blood, love and terror. This is the true story of Dracula as it has never been told before.

One of my most favorite books of all time.
Revisado: 10-21-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely, and I have already. See my review/comments below.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Too hard to pick, since you loved them one moment, and hated them the next.
Which character – as performed by Colin Moody – was your favorite?
Vlad's best friend Ion, (I think that is the way it is spelled, pronounced like yahn.)
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both, and most of all it made me rage, and feel such deep, abiding sorrow for who and what Vlad became, and so angry at the people around him who claimed to love him and then betrayed him.
Any additional comments?
I waited a couple of months to write this after the second listening, just to make sure I wasn't just enthralled by another Dracula book. Since I still am thinking about it, I decided it was time to give my opinion. I cannot express how much I loved this book. It was rather difficult to get into, and I don't think I would have read it in paper format. After the first couple of hours, I was completely engrossed. Once I finished it, I could not stop thinking about it, and within a month had listened to it again, and will probably do so yet again. Having read every book out there on Dracula and vampires (and this before there was the huge vampire genre) this book was truly a revelation. I have been seduced by the vampire legend for many years, but this book was fascinating for delving into what made Dracula; the man, the story and the myth, all woven into one.
There are so many horrific and poignant events in this book, from his time with the Turks; where he learns to stitch his leatherwork, admire his teacher, learn of his enemy's most effective methods of torture, and then upon his return to his homeland; to have such undying faith, to love deeply, and then know such betrayal from both, to stay true to his ultimate goal of ridding his land of the infidels, and to remain silent, for his best friend's benefit, of the truth of his supposed ultimate betrayal of Ion's great love, it was engrossing, exhausting and exhilarating. To be so thoroughly appalled, and yet understanding of his torment and subsequent torture, made me realize that this book will rank as one of my most favorite books of all time. It was brilliant, I think I will listen to it again very soon.....
