Historia
Visiting her family's South Carolina estate, socialite Gray Godfrey wakes from a night out to an empty bed. Her husband, Paul, is gone, and a thrashing hangover has wiped her memory clean. At first, she's relieved for the break from her tumultuous marriage; perhaps Paul just needed some space. But when his car is found abandoned on the highway, Gray must face the truth: Paul is gone. And Gray may not want him found. Her life is unraveling. When a stranger named Annie calls claiming to know Paul's whereabouts, Gray reluctantly accepts her help.

Graphic abuse
Revisado: 12-23-23
I liked this book at first. The author gets to a point in the story where she describes some acts of violent torture and abuse. She lost me at that point.

Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Old wine, new bottle
Revisado: 08-14-23
A large percentage of this story has been told before. I read it years ago: the rise to power of the KKK and the brutal rape and killing of Marge Oberholzer by the head of the KKK, signaling the beginning of the apparent end of the men in white sheets. It would have been more interesting if the author had shown that the KKK did not, in fact, end; it just went underground and changed its name and rituals. Descendants of the Klan live among us today.

Historia
Sallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother’s son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out.

Naomi Shaw used to believe in magic. Twenty-two years ago, she and her two best friends, Cassidy and Olivia, spent the summer roaming the woods, imagining a world of ceremony and wonder. They called it the Goddess Game. The summer ended suddenly when Naomi was attacked. Miraculously, she survived her seventeen stab wounds and lived to identify the man who had hurt her. The girls’ testimony put away a serial killer, wanted for murdering six women. They were heroes.

I listen to a lot of mysteries and this was one of the better ones. No gore. No porn. No child abuse. A well-told story that kept you guessing with lots of twists and turns.

Historia
Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Historia
On a freezing February day, a stranger emerges from out of the gray to request a room at a local provincial inn. Who is this out-of-season traveler? More confounding is the thick mask of bandages obscuring his face. Why does he disguise himself in this manner and keep himself hidden away in his room? Aroused by trepidation and curiosity, the local villagers bring it upon themselves to find the answers.

A good tale. My only criticism is that the author gives away the ending very early on. I won’t spoil your experience by telling you how. That’s part of the mystery!

don't read this book!
Revisado: 10-09-22
It's disgusting. If you like hard porn, you may like some of the beginning: graphic descriptions of the swallowing process. I could tolerate that, but then it got to brutal child abuse - my time is too valuable. And, it is not so well written that you can overlook some or all of this. The characters are one-dimensional, and the story is all over the place. I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but I was motivated to warn the unwary reader. I downloaded the book when Audible offered it for free. If I had paid for it, I would have really been pissed.

Historia
Acclaimed historian and best-selling author Paul Johnson’s books have been translated into dozens of languages. In Socrates: A Man for Our Times, Johnson draws from little-known resources to construct a fascinating account of one of history’s greatest thinkers. Socrates transcended class limitations in Athens during the fifth century B.C. to develop ideas that still shape the way we think about the human body and soul, including the workings of the human mind.

A bit redundant in places. Hardly a mystery. Plot and characters weak. On the other hand not bad for cheap fiction.
