Historia
Caleb Kalenbach is the Lead Pastor at Discovery Church in Simi Valley, CA. Raised in the LGBT community, he was exposed to how some Christians treated the LGBT community, and grew to hate Christians. In high school, he joined a Bible study to disprove the Bible, but ended up following Jesus instead. Later, his parents followed Jesus, too. This is the subject of his first book, Messy Grace - holding on to the truth of God's Word while being filled with grace.

A Must-Read for Pro and Con
Revisado: 03-04-21
No matter your views on LGBTQ people, this book is worth reading or listening. It's well organized and approaches from sociological, psychological, political, theological, and personal angles. It helped clarify my own thinking and clarify my questions too. You don't have to agree with the author to enjoy this book; it only gets preachy in the last chapter and epilogue.

Historia
Native is about identity, soul-searching, and the never-ending journey of finding ourselves and finding God. As both a citizen of the Potawatomi Nation and a Christian, Kaitlin Curtice offers a unique perspective on these topics. In this book, she shows how reconnecting with her Potawatomi identity both informs and challenges her faith.

Adolescent Trope
Revisado: 01-18-21
Listening to this book was like listening to the self-serving prattle of an adolescent girl. Somehow she manages to apply the values of modern liberalism to herself --for example, making space for minorities' voices in the public square--but fails to apply those values to others--for example, speaks uncharitably about those who are who are simply too busy putting food on their table to be interested in her perspective. Nonetheless we are asked to believe the author is not just on a journey of discovery but one of enlightenment.
A limited amount of this could be overlooked, but it's almost cover to cover. If I were being paid $300 an hour as her therapist, I would love this book, but I'm not and I don't.

Machiavelli for the Have-Not's
Revisado: 12-28-19
Contains vulgarity that detract from the book. Without doubt a book you must have on your political science bookshelf. Describes the ethics and tactics and personal traits that enable those without power to take it from those who do. Alinsky speaks from the political left but activists across the political spectrum will benefit from his insights.

Historia
For 18 years, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith have been revolutionizing the study of politics by turning conventional wisdom on its head. They start from a single assertion: Leaders do whatever keeps them in power. They don't care about the "national interest" - or even their subjects - unless they have to. This clever and accessible book shows that the difference between tyrants and democrats is just a convenient fiction.
