There are many books for learning Chinese. There are books that can teach you survival phrases or the first 300 characters, but I have yet to come across a book that teaches you everything you need to know to master the language through self-study. I know this because I bought so many Chinese learning books years ago, and while some were a bit helpful for starting out, none of them taught me step by step what I needed to do to truly master the language. The HSK books by the Confucius Institute are phenomenal and I am a big fan of them, but even they do not tell you HOW to study... Many ...

Some genuinely good advice on learing Chinese.
Revisado: 11-22-24
The author lays out a good plan ok learning Chinese in an immersive learning setting. He points out a few things, specific to Chinese, that should be focused on like tone and cultural influence on the language. Aps, tools, a good day in study are all covered.
The AI narration is ATROCIOUS. It's particularly bad anytime it is taksed with reading pinyin. It seems like a shame that a book that rightly spends so much of it's time dealing with proper pronunciation would allow the audio version to be so bad.

Why do women live longer than men? Why do women have menopause? Why are women more likely to get Alzheimer’s? Why do girls score better at every academic subject than boys until puberty, when suddenly their scores plummet? And does the female brain really exist? In Eve, Cat Bohannon answers questions scientists should have been addressing for decades. With boundless curiosity and sharp wit, she covers the past 200 million years to explain the specific science behind the development of the female sex.

Dr Bohannon lays out an alternative stoty on the sexes in human evolution. At times this story reaches past what we have evidence for but it is a story worth exploring nontheless. Eve is a gem in the pop-anthropology genre.

Historia
Spartacus, a fictionalization of a slave revolt in ancient Rome in 71 BC, is well known today because of the 1960 movie starring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier. It was originally published in 1951 by Fast himself, after being turned down by every mainstream publisher of the day because of Fast's blacklisting for his Communist Party sympathies. The story of Spartacus, born a slave, trained as a gladiator, who led a slave revolt that was eventually put down by Crassus, was immensely popular and went on to sell millions of copies.

This is my first introduction to Howard Fast. Not only does he have a lot to say on the psychology between master and slave but on dynamics of hierarchy in general. He brilliantly explores these ideas in Spatacus!

The inspiring story of Scott Kelly
Revisado: 08-25-21
Endurance really demonstrates how even astronaughts are still human. It's easy to see then as super-heroes way above us mear mortals. Learning Scott's story and by extension, some of Mark's and Gabbie's, really goes a long way to inspiring one to persevere in science and engineering studies.

Historia
In May 1315 it started to rain. It didn't stop anywhere in north Europe until August. Next came the four coldest winters in a millennium. Two separate animal epidemics killed nearly 80 percent of northern Europe's livestock. Wars between Scotland and England, France and Flanders, and two rival claimants to the Holy Roman Empire destroyed all remaining farmland. After seven years, the combination of lost harvests, warfare, and pestilence would claim six million lives - one eighth of Europe's total population.

Historia
"The North" is simultaneously a location, a direction, and a mystical concept. Although this concept has ancient roots in mythology, folklore, and fairy tales, it continues to resonate today within modern culture. McIntosh leads listeners through the magical and spiritual history of the North, as well as its modern manifestations, as documented through physical records, such as runestones and megaliths, but also through mythology and lore. This mythic conception of a powerful, mysterious Northern civilization was known to the Greeks as "Hyberborea" - the "Land Beyond the North Wind".

Here there be some serious crackpot ideas
Revisado: 11-13-20
In the first few chapters "collective" human memory and Atlantian myths are front and center. of you're a fan of Bigfoot, Area 51 stories, and legends of the Lochness Monster, this is probably right up your ally. If you're more into actual history, avoid this book.

Historia
Maverick thinker Nassim Nicholas Taleb had an illustrious career on Wall Street before turning his focus to his black swan theory. Not all swans are white, and not all events, no matter what the experts think, are predictable. Taleb shows that black swans, like 9/11, cannot be foreseen and have an immeasurable impact on the world.

Revisado: 08-23-20
Taleb makes a strong case that we are woefully ill equipped to deal with rare earth shattering events and that such events are now shaping the lives we lead. Anyone remotely interested in making decisions involving any amount of risk, whether you intuitively believe your decisions are risky or not, should read this book.

Historia
On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen set sail from China. Its mission was to "proceed all the way to the ends of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" and unite the whole world in Confucian harmony. When it returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. The great ships were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost in China's long isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America 70 years before Columbus.

Reminiscent of The Da Vinci Code!
Revisado: 06-17-20
1421 was the most enjoyable audiobook, I've gone through this year! Menzies lays out a persuasive albeit inconclusive case that the fleets of Zheng He not only rounded Africa but went on to reach chart the Americas from both the Atlantic and Pacific side, the Caribbean, Oceania, and even arctic and Antarctic regions, in addition to the widely accepted navigation of South East Asia and the Indian Ocean, in their circumnavigation of the world. If you have an interest history, navigation, ecology, genetics, or wild claims and tall tales this book is an absolute "must read"! I have yet to dig too deeply into the evidence that was provided in this book but there are claims in here that inspire incredulity and the reasoning based on these claims has a few holes. While I don't think Menzies has actually succeeded in rewriting history, I do think he's raised some very compelling questions. My next stop will he to his website that is cited in this book to take a look at the evidence he is referencing within.
For the record, the title of this review wasn't meant as a smear. I LOVE The Da Vinci Code!
