Virtual Voice Ruins Good Tale

I read this Scottish tale before and I liked the historical references as much as the plot. I thought I'd like to try the audio but gave up after chapter 4. It was toneless and often words were mispronounced. Such a shame this author couldn't publish her audiobooks with a real person. Whatever the reason, I'll continue to read Regan Walker's books and skip the audio.

Labor of Love

I love this Georgette Heyer novel, but it was a laborious endeavor to get through this audio book; the narrator was too bad. While the tone of his voice is pleasant, it is rather monotonous and jerky. Even playing it at up-speed did not help.

A previous edition of this book with Phyllida Nash as narrator is no longer available, which is unfortunate for it is excellent.

Long-awaited Edition Excels Expectations

When older editions of Georgette Heyer's audio books started disappearing, I feared I'd lost my chance. And thankfully now, some new Penguin U.K. editions are now available in the U.S. The Masqueraders performed by Eleanor Yates is superb! She has a soothing alto voice, and she has mastered the careful timing needed for this difficult novel. And it is a difficult novel. Whether reading print version or listening to audio, it takes a little concentration to sort out the Peter/Prudence and the Kate/Robin characters. After the first couple of chapters, however, the plot unfolds to reveal Heyer's mastery.

In the Masqueraders there are escaped Jacobite rebels, siblings cross-dressing and pretending a part, an egotistical father pulling the strings, unlikely romance, and a lot of fun. As always, Heyer commands the setting with convincing descriptions, lively historical characters, and an authenticity that makes one believe it is truly 1746.

Modern Old-Time Western

Great storyline and great narration. This modern old-time western tale has all the great components of a classic: good vs evil, justice vs vengeance, love, sacrifice, honor. John Deacon takes these parts and expertly weaves a fresh telling of a familiar plot with cattle ranchers fighting off the bully. It reminds me of Shane with a little more hope in the end. I read the book and loved it so much, I ordered the audio. A.T. Chandler's smooth, deep voice and comfortable pace promise a perfect delivery and one to listen to again.

Kids Save This Romance

The hilarious antics of three kids offers the only enjoyment to this listen. I bought this book just for the funny dialogue, it's some of the greatest humor I've encountered. Even Sebastian York's soothing 5-star performance can't redeem the annoying narration of CJ Bloom.

Love Story For Grownups

What makes this a five-star listen is the mature way Sebastian and Via approach their attraction, make life decisions, and face their fears together. A couple of times I thought one or both of them were going to derail into nonsensical behavior, but then a friend or an inner voice guided them back on track. The story was strong and the narration excellent.

Worthy Western

This unvarnished western drama held me enthralled throughout. The conflict between the "free-grazers" and the "ranchers" of the late 19th C. has been often told but never with such flair. The interpersonal relationships drive the plot, but the beautiful narrative binds it all together. Not overly sentimental.

Much better than the movie (which was excellent).

Fun Regency Tale

Madeleine Robins is a master storyteller. Her regency tales are fun and colorful. "My Dear Jenny" is especially engaging.

Loved it Despite ...

Despite the extremely tear-provoking chapters and the god-like warriors, I loved this book. The military expertise and thrilling missions compelled me to keep listening. The narrator was excellent, a pleasing tone well delivered.
