Very thought provoking
Revisado: 03-01-25
So many elements and thought provoking themes in this story. Love how reflective it is of the present day and what “progress” could possibly lead to in the future. Also verily enjoyed the last minute plot twist in the end. A very satisfying listen 🎧

A classic ghost story that has proven to stand the test of time, and for good reason: the richness of detail, the well thought out characters and setting, etc. All of which are sturdily packed into a concise, well written short piece.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. The narrator perfectly captures the tone of the story with his clear, talented voice skills.

Historia
MacDonald stressed the necessity of salvation and the importance of combining Christian faith with obedience to Jesus' teachings. He also believed that God's universal grace would eventually save everyone. Though written in the mid-19th century, these sermons, including "Mirrors of Christ", "Glorified through Trouble", "Salvation from Sin", and "The Giver of Rest", continue to provide contemporary followers with the spiritual guidance they seek.

Every chapter felt like a fresh perspective, opening my mind to see Jesus in new light. Made me reconsider my own bias and preconceived notions of Jesus and where I might have got Him all wrong. It deepened my own spiritual understanding of God’s purpose for us as individuals, and reminded me that God’s view of us and plans and purposes for us are far higher, humbler, and better than anything we can create for ourselves. That Jesus offers us the best way, the deepest truth, and the greatest life to live here and into eternity.
Additionally, I loved the narrator’s voice. I kept thinking that his voice sounded very similar to Zachary Levi’s. I know it wasn’t Zachary Levi, but still, it added a warm familiarity to the reading.

Pleasant & Enriching
Revisado: 12-29-24
I’m always looking to read new fairytales or even old ones I’ve never yet heard. I found this collection of ‘new’ fairytales thoroughly enjoyable and enriching.
I’ve never heard of nor read any of Alydia Rackham’s works before, and was pleasantly impressed. Each story was well thought out, every plot unfolding with ease, holding at their heart an allegorical depth or lesson. They were concise, rich in telling and brought on a feeling of nostalgia that I believe all fairytales should.
My one complaint:
The computer generated narrator lacked personable warmth and inflection in areas where a real human voice wouldn’t have. Hence, parts of the reading coming across a little flat, which I found distracting.

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Waste of Time
Revisado: 12-28-24
80% of the content in this book was, in my opinion, completely unnecessary to the storyline. So much of this book had random plot elements, and several gaps with little explanations.
*SPOILER ALERT*
1. The main character Elphaba had more chemistry with her buddy Boq than her actual love interest—Fiyero, a character the author randomly threw into the book at the end of the ‘Shiz college years’. And let’s just say, that whole relationship was found lacking in depth, chemistry and pretty much everything. I felt nothing when the author killed him off.
2. Within the many irrelevant plots and scenes of the book, the author decides to insert some very perverted and disturbing depictions (e.g. the Time Dragon puppet shows, the Philosophy Club scene, as well as his borderline sexualized descriptions of children characters in the later chapters, etc.). All of which I found added NOTHING to the storyline, and instead made the author come across as somewhat of a creepy pervert.
3. Another bothersome observation was the unnecessary marriages in the book. So many of the characters are suddenly married for no apparent reason. And of those in marriages, they are described as either unhappy, having an affair, or resentful to their spouse, which I found depressing, irritating, and again completely irrelevant to the story.
4. The character building in this book was also found lacking, in that the author would build up relationships between characters (e.g. Elphaba and Glinda, Elphaba and her sister, Elphaba and Boq, etc.) and then suddenly cut them off and skip ahead some unknown number of years in the story and start with some new random characters with little explanation as to why.
5. So much of the content and characters (including main characters) are poorly dragged through a tediously slow storyline filled with empty plot points, leaving the reader confused, bored, and with more questions than answers. Yet, even if one painstakingly bears through the other books in this series to obtain the answers, I’ve a feeling they probably hold no more benefit to the story than the sad characters themselves do.
These are just some of the many reasons I found this book very cumbersome to listen to, and the storyline a drag.
I understand now, why the broadway show and ‘WICKED’ movie threw out much of the book content, changed the storyline, and created something completely different than what this book is.

Historia
The Watchmaker’s Daughter is one of the greatest stories of World War II that listeners haven’t heard: the remarkable and inspiring life story of Corrie ten Boom—a groundbreaking, female Dutch watchmaker, whose family unselfishly transformed their house into a hiding place straight out of a spy novel to shelter Jews and refugees from the Nazis during Gestapo raids. Even though the Nazis knew what the ten Booms were up to, they were never able to find those sheltered within the house when they raided it.

A witch's curse ensures that a boy can never wake at night nor sleep when the sun beams. Conversely, a girl is doomed never to sleep at night nor be awake during the daylight hours. Finally, a twist of fate unites them. MacDonald's skill and imagery and grandfatherly style deliver a remarkable story that is accessible and light, yet acutely stirring and imbued with enduring value. Your capacity for imagination is sure to grow through this story that lifts our spirits and fills our minds with joy.

Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Powerful
Revisado: 01-08-24
God’s heart for mankind and His unfailing and unconditional love are shown through the testimony of Corrie and her sister Betsy, who lived through some of this world’s darkest moments of history—the Nazi occupation of Holland in WWII, imprisonment for hiding Jews, suffering in a Nazi concentration camp, losing loved ones, etc. Their powerful story leaves one humbled and in awe of God’s protection, as well as Christ’s freeing power of thanksgiving, forgiveness, and loving ones enemies. It is a great reminder that God sees His creation from a different vantage point than our fickle human lens.

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

DoubleThink
Revisado: 04-29-23
Just like the ending to Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, the ending to 1984 is subtly terrifying. The storyline lays out the steps governments take to seize power through subtle, yet obvious, erasure of history, changing of words and their definitions, tabooing or obliterating ideologic/religious/political words as “dangerous”, and coercing doublethink. Many of which has been happening in present-day Western culture. In other words, Orwell terrifyingly pulls back the curtain to power-hungry governments and how far they will go to eradicate the individual, God, and reality itself by means of coercion and brainwashing—his main character the prime victim.
