It’s the near future and seven years since a comet hit the earth and blotted out the sun. The world is a dark, frozen landscape. And then, beastly creatures emerge and take over. Excellent acting and characters
Revisado: 01-22-24
(The story wasn't what I expected, and wasn't something I would have chosen had I known, but I changed my "Story" rating from 3 to 4 because what it set out to do it did very well and once I got used to the genre I wasn't expecting I enjoyed it a lot.)
The performances were superb. I liked the Dolby effects: several times I pulled a headphone off my ear because I was sure a noise was coming from outside and once I turned my head to the left because my brain thought someone was speaking to me from behind me on the left.
This definitely doesn't work well without headphones or earbuds. The background noises drown out what characters are saying. In general, the special-effect sounds tended to make it really hard to understand the dialogue (sometimes impossible for me, but I think that's partly because of my less-than-stellar hearing). That said, without spoiling anything all I can say is that the way certain voices or sounds were done was fantastic, especially when a sort of tunnel-effect was used and for multiple voices /crowd sounds all at once outside the compound.
My biggest frustration was having to rewind multiple times and even then not being able to make out the dialogue. It's the sole reason I gave it only 3 stars for "Overall."

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

Enjoyable fluff
Revisado: 01-20-24
I did enjoy this; as I shoveled snow, and then, later, as I did other chores around the house, it was perfect. An entertaining and, at moments, thought-provoking alternate version of Pride and Prejudice, or at least an unauthorized sequel featuring young Lydia, who, at age 15, runs away to elope with a handsome soldier. Things don't go well, and she is punished even as an adult: ostracized, estranged from her family, and miserable with her awful husband. It's short, but definitely a fun read.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Fabulous narration of irresistible stories
Revisado: 09-19-23
I couldn't ask for more. This is my favorite audiobook of all. My only beef: Gaiman writes so well, it seems unfair that he also narrates so very well. But I shouldn't complain, as I received the bounty of his excessive gifts.

Super dope entry in the Threshold series
Revisado: 01-30-20
Heck, this was good. This return to the present fits perfectly as a follow-up to 14 and The Fold. I’d say it’s more 14 than The Fold (though I liked The Fold better), but I don’t know how to get more into it without spoilers.
I guess I can say that, unlike the first three books in the series, you really do need to have read the previous books, 14 and The Fold (Dead Moon isn’t necessary) for this one to make sense.
If you’re into the Threshold series so far you’re gonna love this one.

This guy says he’s been told that he sounds like he’s always smiling, and I’ve gotta say, I totally agree. It was a marvelous listen, and I managed the whole thing in one sitting. Great stories and insight into the creation and lifespan of the show. If you love this show, you need to listen to this excellent book.

Historia
For over 20 years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mt. Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity.

A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townsfolk refer to it as the Hell House.

Very much a product of its time
Revisado: 10-24-17
I'm sure that this was better back in the 1970s when it was written, but after all the advances and growth in genre writing since then, it kind of falls flat. The first 90% is gripping, but the end feels more rushed than prom night. I guess I would recommend it to genre fans, but more as an item of interest in the history of horror writing than as a good read.

Historia
For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

Revisado: 10-20-17
It's written like a half-novel, half game guide, and is not even close to a complete story. Everything's gotta be a series these days. The narration is EXCELLENT, and I wouldn't have finished the audiobook if it wasn't as good as it is.

Revisado: 04-30-17
It's interesting to listen to a classic sci-if short story collection knowing that these stories helped inspire the newer ones. I kept getting into my head and playing Wallace Shawn from Princess Pride about predicting the endings. Everybody should read this collection. It will make your skin fireproof and indestructible.
