Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

A damning account
Revisado: 04-23-25
This is an important book, not only because of the details of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster including incompetent engineering, but also because of the impact of autocratic oversight, repressed reporting, and iron-handed government denials of not just culpability but of the accident itself and the resulting widespread harm to thousands of people. Importantly, this story is bsolutely damning of the autocratic Russian leadership and its insidious harm to everyone it touched … and a warning to allowing or facilitating strong-handed government anywhere.

Historia
In the unforgiving landscape of Afghanistan's Tangi Valley, a military base tells its own extraordinary story. Neither human nor fully inanimate, this “square of dirt” becomes a sentient witness to the brutal rhythms of war, listening intently to the soldiers who build and inhabit it. From American soldiers wrestling with fear and purpose to Afghan troops left to defend an increasingly untenable position, from quiet moments of vulnerability to explosive confrontations, the base observes everything—collecting stories, counting losses, and understanding the futility of conflict in ways ...

Frightening real
Revisado: 03-05-25
A fictional but frighteningly real, very concise, pointed, often dispiriting, personal, and unembellished description of the complicated if not confounding realities of a ground pounder’s combat experiences in Afghanistan.

Historia
On a March night in 2000, two deputy sheriffs serving a warrant were shot in Atlanta, Georgia. One was severely wounded while the other would die a day later. The shooting kicked off a large manhunt in search of the alleged cop killer. Four days later in Alabama, authorities found their man—Jamil Al-Amin. He was a Muslim leader with the title of Imam in the West End neighborhood of Atlanta. He was also the man formerly known as H. Rap Brown. He was a charismatic Black radical in the late '60s.

Yet another bit of history all Americans ought to know but undoubtedly won’t. A sad commentary on a tiny part of the innumerable injustices inflicted on African Americans.

Historia
When we meet Joseph Patrick, he’s in the midst of a classic midlife crisis. After dropping an obscene amount of money on a luxury watch — and leaving his wallet at the store — Joseph hops into a rented Porsche and takes off across the desert. He no sooner hits the open road than a coyote darts in front of the speeding car, wrecking it and leaving Joseph stranded in the heat, with no cell phone service — and no ID.

Quite refreshing for this genre. Devoid of testosterone and replete with caring, welcoming people despite living through desperate times. Absolutely loved this mostly gentle tale of people surviving and thriving despite great difficulties.

In Deep Hole, one of the world’s foremost crime novelists crafts a sweet, poignant romance novella that could only come from his perfectly calibrated sense of time and place. It incorporates fights and misunderstandings and rejection, and is set against the backdrop of a quiet surfing town in Rhode Island where everyone knows each other’s business—and pleasure.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.
