Brilliantly written debut
Revisado: 03-29-25
Originally read this when it was released in 1992. It’s one of my favorite books. The author reads it in her own voice - you can definitely hear Mississippi in it - and does an admirable good job with characters with the exception of Bunny. Still, I really enjoy hearing her voice read her own work, emphasizing this word or that.

The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

Keira is new to this small, cold town and is running from a past that seems to feast on her darkest memories. She finds living with her sister away from English soil to be just the ticket to the new life she is trying desperately to find.

Lead character is too stupid to live. And 4 hours in and the hero and heroine have said maybe 4 words to each other. Sooooooo slooooow. The narrator gives it her all but she’s not up to the task here. Her “American” accents are ridiculously bad. She is reading the words and not acting the characters; it definitely shows. The heroine is supposed to be a goth/heavy metal chick who is an experienced bartender but, ummmm, not so much. She is constantly damsel in distress. HOW MANY TIMES CAN THIS CHARACTER FALL DOWN? I gave up halfway through part two. I’d really like those 7 or so hours of my life back. There’s a decent story here somewhere but the author is so far into the weeds that it’s nothing but tedious dialogue from a ridiculously stupid heroine. Skip this one. I’m asking Audible for my credit back.

Revisado: 01-25-21
Audio is clear but there is no accompanying text that goes with this audiobook. I have purchased other educational books from Audible and they have always had pdf files available to download so you could study along. Here there is no text available - so when the reader says a long sentence in German you have no idea what the German words are, how they’re spelled, etc. You just have to hope you get it close enough to it phonetically. For that reason I would not recommend this book to anyone who is new to German. If you’ve already got some German classes under your belt you can probably use this for a brush up. NOTE: if your membership is on pause you can’t return a book to Audible. Now I’m stuck with this book that is not at all helpful. What a waste of a credit!

Oh for f**** sake! Too stupid to live!!!
Revisado: 07-29-19
Couldn’t make it through the last half of this book because the heroine is so freaking dumb. There could have been a good story here but the heroine, who is an MI 5 agent, is just too stupid to live. Throw in the oddball fact that she’s a bad ass British spy from Texas who is too stupid to live just to make it more ridiculous. The narrator does a good job with the male characters but compounds the heroine’s stupidity by making her sound like she wasn’t smart enough to make the cast of Hee Haw. I lasted 5 hours and then just couldn’t take any more. If I’d spent a credit on this I would return it but it was free with Audible’s Escapes package. If you want a good dragon shifter romance check out Thea Harrison’s “Dragon Bound.”

Heroine is too stupid to live!!!
Revisado: 07-29-18
Downloaded this only bc it was a freebie because of the romance package. Do not waste your credit!!! Story dragged on and on - pacing was terrible. Plot holes abound. Heroine makes STUPID choices again and again. For example, when your family is being stalked by immortal killers, it’s smart to leave your vulnerable six year old baby sister with the neighbor. Who is a sex worker. And has shady, wealthy men over for weekly parties. Even though the child has already been kidnapped once. And the dude that murdered your brother has visited your apartment several times looking to cause more pain. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, folks. By the middle of the book I hoped the heroine would do the reader a favor and go ahead and die. Maybe if there had been better editing it would have been more palatable. Perhaps the other books in the series are better. They would have to be because this once is a real stinker. The narrator is decent but there’s just not much to work with.

This should come with trigger warnings. Graphic rape of a child, disfigurement, and torture. I read to escape reality & for the enjoyment of it. This wasn’t enjoyable.

Where was this author’s editor?
Revisado: 01-24-18
Slow paced and tiresome. The phrase “little mate,” is used a zillion times. (“He took his little mate’s hand... His little mate curled up in a ball... He looked at his little mate....”) The editor that allowed this needs a serious come-to-Jesus meeting. Both hero and heroine are impossible to like. I struggled along with it for 5 hours and called it quits. Don’t waste your time or your credit.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

Steven Weber's narration is brilliant!
Revisado: 08-09-17
I didn't care for Weber's portrayal of Jack Torrence in the made for television version of The Shining, so I was skeptical about his performance as narrator here. Let me say that his narration is absolutely superb and it has changed my opinion of him as an actor. From voicing the tender, childhood voice of Beverly to making the terrible sound of It, Mr. Weber is pitch perfect.
As for the text, I think there could have been better editing. King can and does wax poetic about childhood nostalgia until tedium sets in. The Stan character isn't as three dimensional as the rest of the Losers Club, and that's a shame. There's a sex scene that struck me as more than a little out of place and downright unnecessary. I understand that it marks the end of childhood/innocence but it didn't flow with the rest of the text - more like jamming two broken puzzle pieces together.
That said, it was engrossing and fun. All the creepiness you expect from Mr. King. Having the flashback narrative come together with the present day narrative was extremely satisfying. I've read other King novels where the end of the book gets hokey and comes unraveled. The same thing happens here and it leaves me a bit unsatisfied. But it's a fun way to while way 40 odd hours. Go ahead and take the plunge.

There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while. Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires.

Not creditworthy
Revisado: 06-02-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Narrator isn't engaging and definitely not the voice for the part of a mid twenties woman.
Would you recommend Sunshine to your friends? Why or why not?
No! There's a good story in there somewhere but it's lost in the hands of an undisciplined writer and an editor that should be taken out and horse whipped. Tedious to hear and overburdened with filler. I don't need to hear more than three times that the cinnamon rolls were really, really big and how the heroine is a really, really good baker. But, dear reader, you will have to wade through tons of it. But the 30 mile slog through the wilderness while hoisted on a vampite's shoulder? Yeah, no details at all about that. NONE. I gave it more than four hours of my life and then I shut it off. I'm returning this selection because I can't stand to listen to it any more.
Was Sunshine worth the listening time?
Nope.
