Historia
June 5, 1967: The fearsome, Soviet-equipped Egyptian Army and its 1000 tanks are massed on Israel's southern border. Meanwhile, the Syrian Army is shelling the much smaller nation from the north. And to the east, Jordan and Iraq are moving brigades and fighter squadrons into position to attack. Egypt's President Nasser has declared that the Arab world's goal is no less than "the destruction of Israel."

Historia
Makoto Saigo is half-American and half-Japanese in small-town Japan with a set of talents limited to playing guitar and picking fights. With rock stardom off the table, he turns toward the only place where you can start from the bottom and move up through sheer merit, loyalty, and brute force―the yakuza. Saigo, nicknamed “The Tsunami”, quickly realizes that even within the organization, opinions are as varied as they come, and a clash of philosophies can quickly become deadly. One screw-up can cost you your life, or at least a finger.

A non-fiction account of Japan's underworld, as fascinating and brilliantly written as Tokyo Vice. Both as a sequel to his earlier work and as a stand-alone book, this is an Adelstein masterpiece you must read.

I've worked very hard on this book to bring you a detailed and fun to read guide on how to live, and enjoy life, while homeless. I myself am homeless right now and I've shared my best tips and all my tactics to ensure my survival. I really truly hope somebody can make good use of this, and even if you're not facing homelessness, I promise you a good read. Thank you.

Interesting perspective, well worth listening to
Revisado: 07-08-24
I'm surprised this book doesn't have any reviews yet. This 45 minute audiobook was written by a homeless person, capturing his point of view in a very direct and down to earth way. It uses a computer generated voice, occasionally mispronouncing a word, but not so much that it ever interrupts the flow of the story. Overall a very interesting peek into the daily routine of someone living on the street. I definitely recommend listening to this story to anyone, not just its target audience of people who are in the same situation as the writer and are looking for advice.

Interesting read
Revisado: 06-09-24
A vivid description of the author's journeys through some of the world's most elusive underground places, such as hidden tunnels in the New York Subway, caves not accessible to tourists and the Catacombs of Paris. As someone who has always been fascinated by that realm, I enjoyed this first-hand account of this fellow cave dweller. Towards the end he spends a lot of time reflecting on the spiritual awakening which the subterranean has on him, a little too much for my liking. Overall a book I'd certainly recommend to anyone interested in the subject though.

For six years, journalist Patricia Evangelista documented killings carried out by police and vigilantes in the name of then president Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs—a crusade that led to the slaughter of thousands—immersing herself in the world of killers and survivors and capturing the atmosphere of terror created when an elected president decides that some lives are worth less than others.

Historia
Douglas uncovers the underlying reasons for lack of consistency and helps traders overcome the ingrained mental habits that cost them money. He takes on the myths of the market and exposes them one by one teaching traders to look beyond random outcomes, to understand the true realities of risk, and to be comfortable with the "probabilities" of market movement that governs all market speculation.

Surprisingly hollow
Revisado: 05-03-24
Whole chapters of empty platitudes strung together without ever expressing anything remotely original, educational or even interesting.
The facts from physics which the author occasionally tries to fit into his narrative are misrepresented to such a degree that any reader with a modicum of scientific literacy will recognize his attempts as straight-up pseudoscience.
The book alleges to be about trading, but remains so vague throughout that you could substitute the word 'trading' with just about any other profession and it would barely make a difference to the story.
Overall, I'd say this book is a surprisingly shallow example of self-help literature, and a deeply dishonest one at that.

A liberal society stands on the proposition that we should all take seriously the idea that we might be wrong. This means we must place no one, including ourselves, beyond the reach of criticism; it means that we must allow people to err, even where the error offends and upsets, as it often will." So writes Jonathan Rauch in Kindly Inquisitors, which has challenged listeners for more than 20 years with its bracing and provocative exploration of the issues surrounding attempts to limit free speech.

Fantastic book. I recommend reading both this one and The Constitution Of Knowledge, for a more complete picture of Rauch' view on the subject. And Penn Jillette is my favorite narrator from the hundred or so books I've listened to on Audible. Something about how he puts emphasis on words kept me glued to my headphones, his enthusiasm is infectious.

Historia
This critical account of the fair trade movement explores the vast gap between the rhetoric of fair trade and its practical results for poor countries, particularly those of Africa. In the Global North, fair trade often is described as a revolutionary tool for transforming the lives of millions across the globe. The growth in sales for fair trade products has been dramatic in recent years, but most of the benefit has accrued to the already wealthy merchandisers at the top of the value chain rather than to the poor producers at the bottom.

Well worth reading!
Revisado: 09-15-23
Rather than sticking only to anecdotes, this book sets out to deliver a broad overview of both the advantages and failures of The Fair Trade movement. On this, I think it delivers.
Although much of the book is dedicated to the author's views on the role that Fair Trade plays in the global economy, which may not be of interest to every reader, he thereby did succeed in placing it in a wider context that I had little awareness of beforehand.
In later chapters, this book presents the findings of empirical research from various studies that have been conducted on how much of the premium paid by customers reaches the producers at the end of the chain, along with other measures of how successful Fair Trade really is at achieving the goals proclaimed by its marketing. The answers may surprise you, as the expression goes.
Overall, I got the impression that the author gave a fairly well-balanced account, rather than trying to sell any personal political viewpoint to the reader.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in an objective and in-depth discussion of the nature and scope of Fair Trade's successes and failures.

Historia
Our predictions of the future are a wild fantasy, inextricably linked to our present hopes and fears, biases and ignorance. Whether they be the outlandish leaps predicted in the 1920s, like multi-purpose utility belts with climate control capabilities and planes the size of luxury cruise ships, or the forecasts of the '60s, which didn't anticipate the sexual revolution or women's liberation, the path to the present is littered with failed predictions and incorrect estimations. The best we can do is try to absorb from futurism's checkered past, perhaps learning to do a little better.

The Novella brothers at their best
Revisado: 07-10-23
Interesting, thought provoking, and lots of fun throughout, this book both critically examines the reality of what science fiction has accurately predicted and where its expectations were way off - and what that all says about our brains. Moreover, the writers manage to convey what personally fascinates them so much about this genre. Never a dull moment in this book.
