Heartbreaking but hopeful
Revisado: 09-15-24
This book was triggering in some ways in that it reminded me of things that happened in my own family but overall it was hopeful and gutsy and validating and I’m glad I listened to it.

Background music not relaxing
Revisado: 11-29-22
I would rather listen to calm dialogue. The background music is irritating and the jingling sounds are too sharp for my ears. This isn’t proper hypnosis in my opinion and not conducive to me getting any sleep.

A secret buried in the Antarctic. A puzzle unsolved for thousands of years. And a Brooklyn-born master gunnery sergeant who's royally pissed that he has to babysit the researchers sent to figure it all out. But when Patrick "Wic" Finnegan finally sees what the team has uncovered, he can't believe his eyes, nor is he prepared for the violence to come. Soon, the portal opens and unleashes a storm of unbridled fury upon humanity.

I really wanted to like this book, but after several chapters I felt as though I was reading a book written for teens. Hollywood referances all over the place, over the top characters and awful dialog. I had to return it.

Historia
The constant rush of water over a tall Hawaiian waterfall makes it easy to imagine you're standing under a warm spray of mist as thin streamlets of water trickle down the lava face of the cliff. Unlike canned nature sounds created in a studio, renowned acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton gives you the real deal. He travels the world recording remarkable locations that capture the essence of the place itself.

They are coming. The countdown has begun. First visible only as blips on a telescope image, the discovery of objects approaching from Jupiter's orbit immediately sets humanity on edge. NASA doesn't even bother to deny the alien ships' existence. The popular Astral space app (broadcasting from the far side of the moon and accessible by anyone with Internet) has already shown the populace what is coming.

What invasion?
Revisado: 02-19-19
I bought the book partly because I was intrigued by the title and it got good reviews. And its not a bad book, just not as advertised. Mostly, to me, it was a post-apocalyptic version of National Lampoon's "Vacation", without, obviously, the humor. I kept waiting for aliens to invade, but it was nearly all a sort of travelogue peopled with unlovely and unsympathetic characters who I was rather hoping would get annihilated, preferably about halfway through. No such luck. I don't think Ill be investing in any of the sequels. I don't care what happens to this family.

Historia
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

Lucky find!!!
Revisado: 11-29-18
I don't usually write reviews but I just can't get over how good this book was. Usually, I stick to European history and Golden Age Detective books but there have been so many great Sci-Fi movies and television series' lately that I took a chance on finding a Sci-Fi audiobook that I might like. I put this off for a long time because I was afraid of getting crap. This book was just fantastic, from beginning to end. The pacing was right on, action all over the place, believable plot and characters and no saccharine love scenes. You actually care what happens to these people. I am buying the next three books in this series. I'm hooked.

great stories, wrong narrator
Revisado: 05-25-15
What did you like best about The Great Detective Collection? What did you like least?
Many lovely long stories ruined by the narration. Cathy Dobson seems as though she is constantly trying to sound like a man, and every sentence is painfully drawled out at the end so that it becomes distracting and tortuous to listen to. All the characters sound the same from story to story. I hate leaving a review that is at all negative, and this is just my perspective, but I was really looking forward to listening to this book and it's been difficult.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Not really.
