I was able to see, smell, and hear 1500 England

Many books have transported me to another part and another time. I have been able to imagine how someone or something looks like. This one, however, made me imagine the smell of the rain, the soul, the herbs, and a baby’s hair. It made it possible for me to hear the fire, the washing of clothes, the chicken.
The author’s wonderful prose made it possible.

Un placer escucharlo / A delight to read

Al leerlo sentí como que estuviera escuchando una bella música o viendo una maravillosa obra de arte. Muchas veces me descubrí pensando: “Qué placer escuchar esta historia!!” Es increíble como la autora te hace sentir acerca de los personajes. Unas veces sientes empatía por ellos, otras veces, asco; pero nunca te puedes quedar indiferente.
La manera en que la autora construye las oraciones, los párrafos, es como música!
Y a eso debo agregar la interpretación. Definitivamente, el haberlo escuchado en audio libro, le agregó un toque muy especial. Qué buena interpretación! Las voces, los acentos!!
Simplemente estupendo

It felt like listening to a grate music composition or watching a wonderful work of art. While reading it, I found myself thinking “what a pleasure is to listen to this!” It’s amazing how the author makes you feel about the characters. Sometimes you feel empathy and other times, disgust; but you can’t be indifferent. The way she constructs the sentences, the paragraphs.... it’s like music!
And to that, I have to add the marvelous way it’s read... to listen to it really adds a special touch. The accents, the voices, everything!
Simply superb!!

Qué historia más conmovedora! Escuchar este libro me sobrecogió de tal manera que no podía dejar de escuchar! Se que voy a extrañar mucho a los personajes... me encantaría saber más de ellos. Me admira su fuerza, valentía y resiliencia. Creo que una segunda parte de su historia, de como formaron una linda familia y un próspero negocio, sería muy inspirador! Gracias Sofía, por regalarnos una historia tan maravillosa!!

Oh Isabel Allende... I think I’ve outgrown you

Since I first read one of her books I’ve grown in years and I’ve matured in literacy terms as well, yet her writing is still the same. For some years now, I have been reading Allende out of loyalty, mostly, but I feel I’ve been reading the same book over and over... I’m always able to predict “who did it”, no surprises anymore. She can always be easily seen reflected in one of the characters, as well as other members of her family, (like the mother / daughter that write each other persistently, like she did with her own mom). The setting is always Chile, Venezuela and USA.
Even the adjectives sound repetitive for some reason!
I would recommend this to young adults, in their early twenties; the age I was when I discovered Allende and fell in love with her stories. I guess I need something different now, excitement and passion! It’s just like in a love relationship, because it kind of is... so I guess I would say this is my last Allende book!

I gave it an extra star (so, 2) only because it was included a woman from Guatemala, where I’m from. She got most of it right, the guatemalan colloquialisms, the description of the food, the stories of violence, but the narrator ruined it. Can you imagine listening to an audiobook where George Washington speaks with an Australian accent? Well, it’s the same! I think is better not to do an accent at all, than to do an incorrect one... the mexican coyote spoke like a nicaraguan (not pronouncing the letter S), and even though the text did specify that guatemalan speak using the form “vos”, (as opposed to “tu”) which is correct, the narrator would toggle back and forth between, for example, “mira”, and “mirá”.... it’s a little thing, but to achieve excellence, little things do matter... they can make or break a story...

Me encanta leer a Francisco Martin Moreno. Su forma de escribir es cautivante y te apodera desde el primer momento. A la vez, se conoce la verdadera historia, tan humana, de los protagonistas de otras épocas. Espero, con ansias, más audio libros de este talentoso autor.
