Mirror neurons are an important concept on which the author builds his narrative.

“Mirror neurons were first discovered by neuroscientists who implanted wires in the brains of monkeys to monitor areas involved in planning and carrying out movement.” Page 161.
Carpenter and Huffman (2010) Visualizing Psychology, second edition.

Written with scientific rigor on the one hand, but accessible to a lay audience on the other, this book illustrates the need for a greater awareness of the specific mechanisms that motivate our behaviors during our interactions with other people. I first picked up this book at the library after my then, new wife and I, were searching for better ways to connect and understand how our different backgrounds were seeping into our perceptions of each other and sometimes, perhaps, triggering conflicts between us. Now after a decade of marriage and really digging into this book on a deeper level, my interactions with both my wife and people in our wider social circle, have been more fluid and easy, and I have more confidence in myself and my ability to understand others. It has also triggered some very deep feelings of empathy for one individual in particular, whom I came to realize how deeply he had been hurt in his past and came to a greater understanding of the profound impact his childhood is having on his current, seemingly dysfunctional interactions with us. This one epiphany and many more like it, came while listening to this book and pondering its implications.

Anyways, if you’re searching for a greater understanding of others and tools on how you could better interact with them, and a better understanding of yourself, I would recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed.

I found this book deeply insightful and thorough in its approach. With fifteen chapters the author systematically inventoried my attitudes and behaviors, challenged me to improve my weaknesses, praised my strengths, and explained spiritual topics in a fresh and thought provoking way.

He identifies ADHD and clinical depression as mental health issues that require professional intervention, but if you don’t have either of those diagnosis, he will push you like a high school football coach to improve yourself, and achieve your goals towards a genuinely fulfilling life.

My wife has bipolar and I wish we would have had this book 10 years ago.

David Miklowitz Ph.D, approaches the topic of living with bipolar from a practical angle, with many examples of things that have worked for others regarding specific issues- be they medical, social, or professional, experienced by people with bipolar. This book also serves as a good crises management guide. As people with bipolar, or people living with someone who has bipolar know, a manic episode can be a scary thing, leaving one thinking, “how is life going to go on like this”? By giving specific, well thought out, concrete suggestions the author gives hope for a better future.

The book would also be a great guide for professional practitioners who wish to stand in the shoes of their patients and gain a greater understanding of their day to day struggles. As a matter of fact, I’ve heard our physiatrist make suggestions to my wife and I, that match almost word for word some of the suggestions found in this book. It wouldn’t be a bit surprising to find out she has read this book. And she has been an excellent doctor for her as well.

Thank you Dr. Miklowitz and best of luck on your future endeavors
