Historia
On June 27, 1976, an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris was hijacked by a group of Arab and German terrorists who demanded the release of 53 terrorists. The plane was forced to divert to Entebbe in Uganda - ruled by the murderous despot Idi Amin, who had no interest in intervening. Days later, Israeli commandos disguised as Ugandan soldiers assaulted the airport terminal, killed all the terrorists, and rescued all the hostages but three who were killed in the crossfire. The assault force suffered just one fatality.

Lots of detail
Revisado: 02-23-16
I liked the meticulous detail about the hijacking and raid. I learned that the hostages were a mixed bag in terms of rising to nobility in the face of evil. Fascinating to hear of some (non-Israeli primarily) cheering idi Amin. The pilot does not come off well. Yoni Netanyahu also comes off in a mixed way.
The one thing that I didn't understand is how the paratrooper shot in the spinal cord was found and rescued. Spoiler alert: I loved the PostScript about Haddad's chocolate... Karma.
Overall this is a great exposition of a watershed moment.

Historia
In 1987, Miri Ammerman returns to her hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey, to attend a commemoration of the worst year of her life. Thirty-five years earlier, when Miri was 15, and in love for the first time, a succession of airplanes fell from the sky, leaving a community reeling. Against this backdrop of actual events that Blume experienced in the early 1950s, when airline travel was new and exciting and everyone dreamed of going somewhere, she paints a vivid portrait of a particular time and place....

Starts slow
Revisado: 06-28-15
But once the crashes begin the story really picks up. The narrator is a bit Pollyanna sounding. All that said, by the end I stopped everything and had to listen to it full time. Gripping.

But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire's studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late 19th century may be the only evidence that can now save her life.

Can't stop listening
Revisado: 05-18-15
Great story even though main character's idiocy sometimes makes you crazy. You'd think she'd learn but noooooo. At the end, last few chapters, I just have in and listened in my living room. Doing nothing else but listening. Audio version of page turner.

In 1814, British troops invaded and burned Washington; the White House still bears scorch and soot marks on its foundation stones. Until the British tried to obliterate it, many Americans remained violently opposed to the idea of Washington as the nation's capital.

Washington yes Burning not so much
Revisado: 06-23-08
This book concentrates on the life and contributions of L'Enfant. One does not reach the actual burning of the city until about 75% of the way through the book. Most of the book deals with the planning and construction of Washington. There are many interesting tidbits - L'Enfant spent an inordinate amount of time looking for copper to reproduce his plan for the capital - as well as well told stories such as L'Enfant's incredible and self-destructive stubbornness. Yet the book does not capture. Finally the author takes the occasion to wax on about 9/11 in a manner that never really surpasses the personal.

Just didn't care about the characters
Revisado: 09-30-06
This is very centered on the anachronistic features but the characters are not very interesting or well-developed. The reader sounds like he's from MD or VA not Connecticut.

Historia
George Hall is an unobtrusive man. A little distant, perhaps, a little cautious, not quite at ease with the emotional demands of fatherhood or of manly bonhomie. “The secret of contentment, George felt, lay in ignoring many things completely.” Some things in life can’t be ignored, however: his tempestuous daughter Katie’s deeply inappropriate boyfriend Ray, for instance, or the sudden appearance of a red circular rash on his hip.

More please
Revisado: 09-16-06
This is a touching, funny, tender story of a British family's mental journey as they prepare for the daughter's wedding. The characters are rich, brilliantly described. The narrator is amazing. His reading of the young grandson is so spot-on that I laughed almost every time the young boy spoke. The only problem with this book is that it ends (although I thought the ending was perfect).

We have long attributed man's violent, aggressive, competitive nature to his animal ancestry. But what if we are just as given to cooperation, empathy, and morality by virtue of our genes? What if our behavior actually makes us apes? What kind of apes are we?

This is an insightful book filled with "aha!" moments. It takes complicated social structures and breaks them down into sensible biological building blocks. Very easy to listen to, well read

Historia
Kipling creates a harmonious picture of India that unites the secular and the spiritual, the life of action and that of contemplation. It is the story of the orphaned son of an Irish soldier, Kimball O'Hara, who spends his childhood as a vagabond, traveling through India with an old Tibetan lama, enthralled by the "roaring whirl" of the country's colorful landscape and by the diversity of its people.

OK
Revisado: 09-06-06
If you need to know what is going on at all times in a book, this tale is not for you. On the other hand Kim does paint an evocative picture of a very particular time and place - the Great Game in India-Pakistan in the late 19th century. The character of Kim is enjoyably described as is that of Mahboub Ali (sp?). The reading is ok although I personally did not like the way that the Lama was made to sound. The recording is very uneven and of relatively low quality.

Superb, Sublime, Amazing
Revisado: 08-31-06
This is an amazing story told with such love for human beings with all of their frailties and faults. Just the description of Bishop Myriel is amazing, a character that will stay with me always. The sidebars (that can be quite long) are interesting and made me learn more about French history. [Wikipedia was a helpful companion to listening to this book.] The ending is redemtive and tragic. In the end I was just so sad to have to say farewell to the characters that I cared so much about.
I really liked the narrator's style, his different voices, his singing and of course the drollness of his upper crust English accent.
A marvelous "read".

Historia
One of the greatest of French novelists, Balzac, trained as a lawyer, was a great judge of human nature. In 1833 he conceived the idea of linking together his novels so that they would comprehend the whole society in a series of books. This plan eventually led to 90 novels and novellas (including more than 2,000 characters) that he called "The Human Comedy". Balzac's huge and ambitious plan drew a picture of the customs, atmosphere, and habits of the bourgeois France.

Hated it
Revisado: 08-31-06
Having just finished Les Miserables which I loved, I thought I'd go for another old French book. Well I hated Pere Goriot. Listened to 2 1/2 hours and then gave up. Lots of characters and Balzac TELLS you about them. He does not show you their character by describing their lives (as Hugo does so memorably). And therefore there is not much dialogue. All the characters jumbled together for me and in the end I just didn't care.
