In her highly anticipated new novel, Judy Blume, the New York Times number-one best-selling author of Summer Sisters and of young adult classics such as Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, creates a richly textured and moving story of three generations of families, friends and strangers, whose lives are profoundly changed by unexpected events.

In 1987, Miri Ammerman returns to her hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey, to attend a commemoration of the worst year of her life. Thirty-five years earlier, when Miri was 15, and in love for the first time, a succession of airplanes fell from the sky, leaving a community reeling. Against this backdrop of actual events that Blume experienced in the early 1950s, when airline travel was new and exciting and everyone dreamed of going somewhere, she paints a vivid portrait of a particular time and place - Nat King Cole singing “Unforgettable”, Elizabeth Taylor haircuts, young (and not-so-young) love, explosive friendships, A-bomb hysteria, rumors of Communist threat. And a young journalist who makes his name reporting tragedy. Through it all, one generation reminds another that life goes on.

In the Unlikely Event is vintage Judy Blume, with all the hallmarks of Judy Blume’s unparalleled storytelling, and full of memorable characters who cope with loss, remember the good times and, finally, wonder at the joy that keeps them going.

“Like many family stories, this one is not without its life-changing secrets and surprises. There is no surprise that the book is smoothly written, and its story compelling. The setting - the early 1950s - is especially well realized through period references and incidents.” (Booklist)

“In Blume’s latest adult novel...young and old alike must learn to come to terms with technological disaster and social change. Her novel is characteristically accessible, frequently charming and always deeply human.” (Publishers Weekly)

Reseñas editoriales

Editors Select, June 2015 - What could be better than a Judy Bloom book to kick off the summer? In the Unlikely Event is accessible historical fiction for adults. At its center is a real-life event that occurred in Blume's hometown of Elizabeth NJ in the early 1950s, when not one, but three planes fell from the sky over a three-month period. This is the common thread that ties together a large cast of characters whose stories span generations - each helping to paint a picture of a distinct time and place and of the long-term effect this shared experience has on an entire community. Personal, informative, and heart-warming all at once - In the Unlikely Event is exactly what I hoped from the renowned Judy Bloom! (Tricia, Audible Editor)

Featured Article: On the Enduring Legacy of Judy Blume

Judy Blume's middle grade and young adult novels have helped raise generations of kids, reshaping the literary landscape for young listeners. Since the 1970s, Blume's writing has contributed to destigmatizing taboo topics like puberty, teen sexuality, masturbation, menstruation, bullying, disability, and more. And now, rather than her books being deemed outdated or no longer relevant to today's kids, we're experiencing a "Blume-aissance."

This was a great book. Can't wait to listen to it again. A lot of information and great characters

Great book with lots of detail

The narrator's cheery delivery and little girl voices were a constant distraction for me. I kept asking myself who the intended audience is for this book as the author does seem to keep straying back towards her young-adult fiction roots - the voice did not do the novel any favours.

Annoying narration

Really enjoyed listening to this book. The characters are many, but all so effectively developed. Recognized so much of my own parents' reminisces & a bit of my own. Thank you.

Good story. Characters very well done.

Nice description of life in the 50s

Good story

I typically enjoy Judy Blume, but this book - not so much. There were too many plotlines told from the point of view of too many characters. Each time it shifted, I had to think really hard about who was speaking and where they fit in the story.

Disappointing

Was good but took a long wind up to get to know all the characters and then the end seemed abrupt.

A lot of investment to get to know the characters

The story was good. However, I felt like it dragged on and then the last few chapters everything sped up as if she realized she needed to finish in a hurry. Just not my favorite of Judy Bloom's novels.

Not my favorite Judy Bloom book

This was a fictionalized version of a true story that happened during the time Judy Blume was growing up in Elizabeth, New Jersey. During a 3 month period, 3 planes crashed into buildings in Elizabeth, NJ as they were either leaving or landing at the Newark, NJ airport. This books is about how the plane crashes affected the people of Elizabeth, especially the young people - and in particular those who witnessed the plane crashes as they were going about their normal lives - and how it changed the trajectory of their lives. It was written very well, and the narrator did a wonderful performance. It's a sad story of true events that most people have either forgotten, or are too young to have even known about. Even though I usually don't like listening to tragic stories, because I feel that stories should either be entertaining, or lift you up higher in thought ----this book was composed so well that one really got into the characters, and therefore swallowed that bitter pill of tragedy in order to stay with the characters. I think it is a book well worth reading or listening to on Audible.

True story - sad but sweet.....

Some scenes were too graphic for me, and I'm not talking about the crash scenes. Other than that I always enjoy a good, family drama. You cheer, you cry, you get angry for many of the characters. It is easy to connect with the people and their stories. Well done Judy Blume and and Kathleen McInerney. An enjoyable listen and story.

Slice of life

The Audible office is close enough to Newark airport that this story occasionally hit a little too close to home. I do love Judy Blume though, and it's such a treat to have a new book from her. The story and performance definitely kept my attention (and made a long dentist appointment much more enjoyable).

Too Close for Comfort
