Historia
Dr. Margaret Richter has it all. She’s rich, thanks to her best-selling self-help books. She has a beautiful home in Cape Cod overlooking the beach. And she has a monthly book club that everyone is dying to get invited to. Literally. Because behind the crystal wine glasses, the fine linens and the catered hors d'oeuvres lies a tangled web of secrets, of deceit, of murder. No member of the book club is innocent—and many are guilty. And the person with the most to hide is Margaret Richter herself.

A solid 4

The only reason I’m dropping off a star is that it didn’t really happen despite the claim of the last chapter. I live in Massachusetts and visit Wellfleet frequently, if this was a real case(s) it would have made all the papers. It didn’t. We are known for one serial killer — the Boston Strangler; and a couple of spree killings. However, a twist conveyance of murders all related to one book club would have had every psychiatrist drooling to study their dynamics.
There are few plot holes and some continuity problems but none so bad as to ruin the story.
For the editors, when entertaining this many authors writing a segment in a single novel; you are challenged to see where the time line and continuity goes awry. For example: the time line of killings committed in the same location. Their at least 3 chapters where there is overlap and the hostess would have been easily caught by the catering staff, the friend, or the guy hiding in the house. Smooth out this time line and you would have an excellent story.

Could have been good
Revisado: 04-01-25
The synopsis sounded interesting, so I started this with a smile. I had a few books with virtual voice narration. They weren’t as good as a real person, but they weren’t bad. This one however was awful.
It stuttered, mispronounced simple words, pronounced acronyms as real words and kept mispronouncing the character names to the point I couldn’t follow the plot.
I wanted to stop and review this about a 1/4 of the way through but had to endure it a bit longer. I let it play and fell asleep[from boredom].
I gave the story a 3, as I still believe it had potential, but I will get the actual book and read it, skipping the virtual voice disaster.
Recommendation to the author: re-record this with a real person one who knows how to pronounce helluva and not say w-t-f as word.
You did your creation a disservice going with the computer narrator.

It’s too looonnnng
Revisado: 03-21-25
Brevity! The author needs to learn to cut down the manuscript judiciously. 52 chapters! It could have been told with just 30. By the time you get to the twist and turns, you have probably nodded off several times. Yes it’s an abduction case, but no we don’t have to go through every hour of the search with them. Then you get to the last few chapters and the author throws in everything’s but the kitchen sink.
Really you will need a score card to keep all the twist straight..and I was so bored by then … well you get the idea.
Leave this one on the shelf and read The Lovely Bones instead.

If they were actually teaching “this course” now in 2025, all women should take it.
Even if you got a ‘C’ in this class I guarantee you will have one hell of a good time.

Some nice twists

This was an enjoyable listen. The plot moves at a good pace. The foreshadowing is followed through and it’s a mystery not a romance pretending to be a mystery

Oh please!
Revisado: 07-13-24
I selected this for a mystery not a ridiculous romance. Her husband that she was soooo in love with hasn’t been dead a week and she is already looking at another man and wants to remind herself that her husband was no longer part of the family! Are you kidding me!
For me this ruins the suspension of disbelief and puts me right into “oh please this is a cheesy lifetime movie network movie in the making.” So much for a good mystery.
Folks placing these in categories a mystery means that is the foremost point of the story not a romance.
Pull this from psychological mystery thrillers and place the it into romantic mysteries. A completely different category

Completely hooked
Revisado: 03-01-24
This is a great detective series. Yeah it’s a little repetitive but that happens in individual books of a long series. They stand alone, but yet they don’t. If you picked book 16 first rather than 1 you will be happy for the background information.

With a new job I didn’t apply for and an extended family I didn’t know I had - midlife has become somewhat problematic. Gluing ghosts back together is easy compared to my new celestial occupation. The Grim Reaper wants to put a ring on it. Tim wants to be a father. Candy Vargo has lost her damn mind, and Jennifer thinks we’re all sparkly vampires. I’ve been given an impossible task with catastrophic consequences for failure, but it wouldn’t be my midlife without another crisis.

Wacky series and fun
Revisado: 03-01-24
I absolutely love the series. Especially book 6! To watch the “idiots” not know what to do at a home birth was hysterical. The part about out shopping for knee caps had me rolling on the floor and I love the 4 horsemen! Start with book one and let it build, the protagonist’s rough edges smooth as the books go on.

Non-traditional, funny and spunky. For stress relief and a smile these books are great. I love when Joe and Clyde bicker. It’s too funny.
I’m sorry the author has passed, but Joe will live on thanks to her.
