Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America is part memoir and part investigative analysis that explores the explosive and confusing intersection of faith, politics, and sexuality in Christian America. The quest to find an answer is at the heart of Does Jesus Really Love Me? - a personal journey of belief, an investigation, and a portrait of a faith and a nation at odds by award-winning reporter Jeff Chu.

Grateful for Jeff's perspective
Revisado: 02-19-25
Jeff, thanks for all your hard work to put this book together.
I hope many people read this to develop empathy and insight into the many views Chu has compiled in this book. At the end, Jeff apologizes for his attempt at southern accents--I must admit, that didn't bother me, but I felt like I was being yelled at by most of the quotes in this audio book (even when descriptions of the quotations depicted otherwise).

A intriguing sweep of Christian history, DBH does a great job at highlighting various snapshots over the years... pretty disturbing to listen to it all at once. I've heard about much of this over the years, but to have it in one source is incredibly beneficial.

Historia
Many Christians, especially those raised in the world of fundamentalism, were conditioned to view the Bible as a book that is unambiguous and straightforward. This is reflected in the popular phrase, "The Bible says it. I believe it. That settles it." However, with thousands of denominations and fragmented sects worldwide, Christianity is perhaps more noticeably divided now than it has ever been. This is especially true when it comes to how Christians interpret and apply scripture. The Bible has also been used as a way to oppress the marginalized and motivate countless forms of cruelty and ...

So good I forgot it was narrated by virtual voice!
Revisado: 02-23-24
I was curious what an audio book narrated by virtual voice would sound like and was doubtful, but tried anyway. Seriously impressed! it's even better than some voice talent I've heard from other books! I remembered it wasn't a human when scripture passages or years were read in an unnatural way, but other than that, totally fine. Content-wise, the author helped collect a lot of information into a helpful conversation starter. Definitely give this book a listen!

We are not leaders having a leadership crisis. We are leaders having a human being crisis. Connection is the antidote - yet, many of us don't know how to connect to ourselves compassionately in order to enhance self-discovery. Without this gift, we cannot connect - in a meaningful way - to a higher purpose or engage with others to ignite inspiration.

Great book not JUST for"Good Guys"-a wife's review
Revisado: 04-03-22
As a wife, I cannot tell you how healing and helpful this book was for ME! We've been married for years, and yet, for me to hear a MAN summarize and condemn the unhealthy messages I've heard and deduced from American evangelicalism, was nothing short of validating and empowering. I laughed and cried throughout parts of this book. I highly recommended this book! (Even and especially if you've been married for a while!)

Listen to this book with an open mind and heart. If you need to hit pause, do so, but don't fast forward through the uncomfortable parts. We need to see evil and acknowledge it without looking aside. If you feel paralyzed about what to do and have no idea where to start, this is a great read to form some helpful categories. Be strong and courageous.

Historia
Women comprise at least half the world, and usually more than half the church, but so often Christian teaching to women either fails to move beyond a discussion of roles or assumes a particular economic situation or stage of life. This all but shuts women out from contributing to God's kingdom as they were designed to do.

I felt a bit exhausted listening to the book. I felt like the inspiration came from a place of stirring up righteous indignation. Good information, but delivery felt more tiring than inspiring.
