Be kind to yourself
Revisado: 04-12-25
I’m halfway though the audiobook and I want to buy the paperback, so I can highlight passages throughout as well as write some of them down on my whiteboard in my office. So many good concepts for how to navigate struggle. This book is for everyone.
Update: I consider this a guidebook to letting yourself feel feelings, acknowledging and getting curious about those feelings to flesh them out in order to chase more joy in the day.

Historia
Sometimes you have to be locked up to find true freedom. David Mike swore allegiance to his country in 1987, only to be dishonorably discharged for desertion. One bad choice after another landed him at Fort Leavenworth, a notorious military prison in Kansas, where he starts a new life as an inmate. Follow his journey as he claws his way toward Christ and away from the past that yearns to destroy him. Dishonor: One Soldier’s Journey from Desertion to Redemption is a vulnerable and compelling look at a life gone wrong.

So appreciative of this story
Revisado: 03-23-25
I appreciate that Mike shared all of the details in the book. My son recently completed a sentence and is getting back on his feet. His perspective seems changed and for as much as I have leaned on the hope that a good life is out there for him, there are been some dark times keeping the hope alive.
The details of Mike’s story and the conversations I’ve been able to have with my son not blocked by the “do you accept this call” message have awaken the believe in life for my beloved son.
In this experience, I am reminded of what God’s perspective must be for each of his children.

Full of great advice and good humor
Revisado: 06-11-23
Jon has a unique method of giving encouragement wrapped in grace and sprinkled with humor in a simple package. His ideas are easy to implement due to their simplicity. That doesn’t mean obtaining success will be easy. There is still the work, experience, and growth that must occur.

Historia
Overthinking isn't a personality trait. It's the sneakiest form of fear. It steals time, creativity, and goals. It's the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing it. And it's an epidemic. When New York Times best-selling author Jon Acuff changed his life by transforming his overthinking, he wondered if other people might benefit from what he discovered. He commissioned a research study to ask 10,000 people if they struggle with overthinking too, and 99.5 percent said, "Yes!"

It you read it, you will know what that means! Jon’s story telling and list manner of teaching really drives home the points. I saved several clips from the audio book to practice replacing some of my soundtracks.

Historia
In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.

Historia
When it comes to the “hard seasons” of life—the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job—transformation seems impossible when grief and uncertainty dominate your days. Especially when, as Didn’t See that Coming reveals, no one asks to have their future completely rearranged for them. But, as Rachel Hollis writes, it is up to you how you come through your pain—you can come through changed for the better, having learned and grown, or stuck in place where your identity becomes rooted in what hurt you.

Perfect time
Revisado: 04-07-21
I bought the original edition of this book years ago. I kept picking it up and wanting to absorb what was on the pages and I would put it down. I finally bought the audio version and I could not have absorbed this at a more perfect time in my life.
This particular season has been hard for me, but growing and changing is hard. I’m glad I have the tools from this book to use.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.
