Virtual Voice is a poor imitation
Revisado: 03-31-25
This story was ok, the usual level of unbelievable thriller, think Le Carre via Indiana Jones. But Virtual Voice was very distracting and annoying and no substitute should be made for a human narrator who understands the complexity and nuance of language and emotion. This was my first and last try of this technology. Authors should heed this if they want their books to have the desired impact.

Her investigation into Ray Johnson’s history focuses on the unsolved murder of a teenager who died thirteen years earlier. The case went cold, but questions remain. After the girl’s death, people close to her started disappearing—Ray’s brother first, then the girl’s mother. But why?

The subjects here being mostly staid and dry, the author does a good job of weaving together the personal narrative is with the war elements. I do love the meticulous recounting of the experiments which is the harrowing heart of this tale.

Much improved audio
Revisado: 12-14-24
The author leveled up her storytelling art and the audiobook direction did as well. The use of multiple of voice actors enhanced the multiple perspectives and moods across the domain of the novel.
While the author is not interested in and probably won't improve her grasp of military battles... everything else is well done. Her facility to flesh out as many disparate major and minor characters is to be applauded. Her capacity to keep a story as long as this one engaging especially when the outcome is already known is also exceptional.
I hope these continue to improve as it's wonderful to have a feminist, sapphic fantasy author that can weave a very long tale.

Do not read this book
Revisado: 09-03-24
This book, and yes I unfortunately listened to the whole thing, is sexist male power fantasy trash. I kept thinking that any one of the characters, but mostly the main character, would be redeemed, but no.All the characters are one-dimensional stereotype cutous. Madonna, whore, burdened hero, spiteful Mother, emasculated brother. Zero characters have human motivations , depth , complexity or sense. It's truly offensive that not one character can see any of their flaws and overcome them. There is no logic to how this story unfolds. The publisher should be ashamed.
