The story flows beautifully with situations resulting in reactions and dialogues that are believable. Elizabeth is very much the sensible version of herself, and the entire tale is refreshingly without forced misunderstandings and absurdities. This work deserves more than a Virtual Voice.

Funny find…
Revisado: 11-17-23
This is a fun story. The humor is sparkling, almost as much as the wit. It’s been a long time since I came across a story with so much easy humor working ceaselessly in the background - uplifting and completely unforced. Now that is a rarity. In addition to being well-written, it is also narrated beautifully. Enjoyed every minute of it. One little caveat - it felt more like lessons in espionage rather than a narrative about an absorbing mystery. That said, it is absorbing in every way of its own.

Historia
Graham is a detective inspector with London’s Metropolitan police force. He’s a career police officer, an educated, reserved, thoughtful, some might say, complex man. He has suffered tragedy in his life that serves to exaggerate his more introspective characteristics and, like many of us, has to look his demons in the eye from time to time and make tough choices. This box set contains the first four mysteries in this bestselling series.

Very well narrated, small town mysteries. Finally, a detective with a penchant for tea. Uncomplicated and fun. Would like to be able to listen to the others in this series.

Immersive story, beautifully narrated

I am surprised to see that there are not more reviews commending this book/series or author. This is the first book by this author I have had the pleasure of listening to, and I am delighted, because the narrator is lovely. She breathes life into this absorbing, highly atmospheric story written (refreshingly) in the third person … so much so that it really sounds as though the narrator and the author are one and the same, and they are speaking with you directly.

Historia
A long line had formed for the standing-room-only section of the Woffington Theatre. London’s favorite musical comedy of the past two years was finishing its run at the end of the week. Suddenly, the line began to move, forming a wedge before the open doors as hopeful theatergoers nudged their way forward. But one man, his head sunk down upon his chest, slowly sank to his knees and then, still more slowly, keeled over on his face. Thinking he had fainted, a spectator moved to help, but recoiled in horror from what lay before him.

Police procedural with a chase
Revisado: 01-05-23
I like the writing style of Tey very much. I wasn’t overjoyed with the denouement, but the process of reaching it wasn’t without relish. I do think that the chase or hunt for the fugitive from (presumably) justice was too protracted, rather stretching the point of being a red herring too far for plausibility. Even so, as I said before, she certainly had a way with words.
P.S. I would have liked a male voice detailing the loads of introspection by the main male investigator. There are so many audiobooks with this sort of clash (both ways). That said, the narration is good.

I liked how this series of plays/ dramatizations seemed to be so much about older women. It’s a space often ignored, and A. Bennett keeps it center stage with consummate finesse. There is humor with understanding, and I think the playwright’s affection shines through quite movingly.

Historia
Anthony Trollope's series of witty, gently satirical stories of provincial life are set in the fictional town of Barchester and the surrounding county of Barsetshire. With a focus on the lives, loves and tribulations of the local clergy and rural gentry, the canvas is broad and colourful, with a set of iconic characters in whose lives we become intimately involved as they grow up, grow old, and fall in or out of love and friendship across the years.

If you’ve never read/ listened to Anthony Trollope, you can start here. A lot is made of his other novels (The way we live now) but I feel if you’re going to visit only one Trollopian space then the folks of Barsetshire will provide you with sufficient range of emotive entertainment. With this one production you get more than a glimpse, and it is still enough of a teaser.

One is simply weird
Revisado: 11-17-22
The first dramatization - A Shilling for Candles - is as far from a Tey as I cannot even imagine. I truly don’t know what it is but to be fair, if one were not thinking of Tey, it could be considered entertaining (facetious comedy) in its own right, because like all the other dramatizations or readings, it has wonderful performances by fine actors. I agree with the others that The Franchise Affair is read very well (but of course, it is Edward Petherbridge after all). On the whole, it is worth listening to.

Sweet, slow romance
Revisado: 07-11-22
No surprises here. This is really a romance. I came for the mystery but that was sorted in my mind quite early on. So I stuck around for the romance. It’s that lovely, slow romance of sweet manners and so much left unsaid. It is a very particular kind of narrative that has a strong undercurrent of romantic attachment yet does not languish in that realm. Certainly not 21st century style, simply because we don’t do it this way anymore, nor do we talk or write about it as such. For that very reason it is a tender, uplifting narrative.

Historia
Wilkie Collins was one of Victorian England's best-loved and best-selling authors, and a crime-fiction pioneer. His enthralling 'sensation novels' such as The Woman in White paved the way for today's thrillers and his tour de force The Moonstone is one of the first, and greatest, modern-detective stories. This collection features dramatisations of these two masterpieces, with star casts including Toby Stephens (The Woman in White) and John Sharp (The Moonstone). Also included are adaptations of three of Collins' other major novels.

Surprisingly good shorts
Revisado: 07-11-22
As expected of a BBC production the narration/voice acting is excellent. The thing that stands out is the prowess of W.Collins in his short stories, and I was quite taken with the humor in some of these. I can’t remember the last time I was laughing in sheer frustration with anybody the way I did whilst listening to Mrs. Badgery. Mystery novels is what W.Collins is known for, and since I had read those before coming across this production, all I can say is that the dramatization of all of these novels has been done superbly. But Mrs. Badgery and her ilk seem to be underrated. So I am glad I got this one.
