Historia
At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children. Both paths promise a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her pedigree is a lie. She must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society. And school couldn’t prepare her for the difficult choices she must make after graduation.

Great Storyline!
Revisado: 05-10-24
This book reminded me of a cross between the Handmaid's Tale and the Hunger Games. Really cool themes of class warfare, gender inequality, and queerness are addressed as well as beautiful cultural references. I'm upset that it ends on a cliffhanger and now I must immediately purchase the next book!

George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution is an intimate part of our contemporary culture, quoted so often that we tend to forget who wrote the original words! This must-read is also a must-listen!

Revisado: 02-18-24
It's a successful satire of society and politics regardless of the guiding political theory. unfortunately, many of the occurrences represented in this book still happen today and seem to continue well into the future. this should be read by all adolescents in schools.

Historia
“One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug.” With this startlingly bizarre sentence, Kafka begins his masterpiece, The Metamorphosis. It is the story of a young traveling salesman who, transformed overnight into a giant, beetle-like insect, becomes an object of disgrace to his family, an outsider in his own home, a quintessentially alienated man. Rather than being surprised at the transformation, the members of his family despise it as an impending burden upon themselves.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Jeanette McCurdy is SUCH a badass. This book is a must read for anyone struggling with mental health, addictions, disordered eating, and so many other things. It's funny, heartbreaking, and poignant. I'm so glad I read this. It is so validating and relatable for so many of my own experiences even though I'm obviously not famous or anything like that. I'm so glad she shared her story. I hope she keeps writing.

Historia
Richard Wright's powerful and eloquent memoir of his journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. At once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment, Black Boy is a poignant record of struggle and endurance - a seminal literary work that illuminates our own time. The once controversial, now classic American autobiography measures the brutality and rawness of the Jim Crow South against the sheer desperate will it took to survive as a Black boy. Seventy-five years later, his words continue to reverberate.

Unique perspective and captivating story
Revisado: 02-15-24
This book has so much trauma and so much hope. It's a great read for anyone interested in Black history, African-American history, communist history, and memoirs in general. I really appreciate hearing his honest thoughts and criticisms of both the Jim Crow South and the supposedly free North. Many different communities followed a parallel process, which I thought was so interesting. I also loved the critique of the politics within the CP and how that can inform our radical activism today. It still stands that the left can be susceptible to petty dramas and look for enemies where we should be seeing comrades. Overall, a wonderful call for solidarity, seeing nuance, and cultural humility.

Spicy fantasy romance
Revisado: 12-10-23
This book started off in a vey buttoned up, high society kind of place, but around chapter 14 or 15 it took off into the realm of fantasy. I just needed to be a little patient and then the best spicy scenes I've ever read came in one after the other in the book. and it wasn't just thrown in. there was an actual plot to it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves SJM or other similar authors.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

Meh
Revisado: 09-28-23
This book wasn't really that well written and the story was predictable. I could see myself loving this as a teenager, but it was just a bunch of cheesy lines and played out plot twists you can see coming from a mile away. I'd give this book a solid C+.

Historia
Karl Marx's devastating critique of capitalism, and his proposal of communism as the answer to the failings of the capitalist system, bore their greatest fruits in the twentieth century with the formation of the communist state in the Soviet Union. This great venture has now all but completely failed. Yet the force of the communist belief offered the prospect of "justice on this earth" to countless numbers. And Marx's critique has influenced generations of thinkers who call themselves Marxists.

Capitalist Description of Marx
Revisado: 09-04-23
This wasn't an explanation of Marxism but instead a personal tirade by the author about how disgusted he is with Marx's lifestyle. He is basically saying the whole time that communism doesn't work and capitalism is the way to go, flaws and all. It's basic capitalist propaganda.
