Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Netflix series was very similar
Revisado: 03-24-21
The story was good. I read this mostly to see what the difference were between the series and the book because I really enjoyed the series. Well the series was so accurate to the book, it made reading it almost boring. If you’ve seen the series, i don’t think there’s a need to read it; however, if you haven’t, I do suggest you read it as it’s a very good story. The narration is ok, not my favorite.

Historia
Detective Michael Palermo built his career on his unique ability to inhabit two worlds at once: the world of law enforcement and the underworld of New York’s crime family organizations. Palermo participated in over 2,000 arrests while maintaining close relationships with the kingpins of organized crime - ties that allowed him to stay one step ahead of the rest of the New York City Police Department. This true crime drama takes you inside the police force at its most corrupt.

Just keep going.
Revisado: 03-15-21
This was a painful book to get through. The first intro about the work with the Stones is pointless for the rest of the book. Most of it sounds like a bad movie, and the fact that he changed names of well known mobsters is pointless and frustrating ...made it difficult to keep track of the story in time. Props to the narrator. He did a great job with trying to make the individuals standout, although some of the accents were a bit cliche, but it’s difficult working with mediocre material. In my opinion, these stories are largely false or inflated to make the subject look good, or they are true and he’s dirty. I don’t believe for a second he did all that and didn’t take bribes or kickbacks. For its length, pass on to something more interesting. If you care about the mafia, I recommend Five Families by Selwyn Rabb for a great history.

Overrated

I felt this was overrated when I had to read it in school and I still feel that way. The dialogue is stilted and phony. The descriptive passages can be very effective but there few and far between.

Historia
When Stieg Larsson died, the author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had been working on a true mystery that out-twisted his Millennium novels: the assassination on February 28, 1986, of Olof Palme, the Swedish prime minister. It was the first time in history that a head of state had been murdered without a clue who’d done it—and on a Stockholm street at point-blank range. Internationally known for his fictional far-right villains, Larsson was well acquainted with their real-life counterparts and documented extremist activities throughout the world.

A must read for people with kids going to college
Revisado: 01-04-21
This is a very informative and well researched book that highlights the problem of sexual assault. I think all people would benefit from listening but especially people who are going or will go to college so they can understand the dynamics and be better prepared for the environment. It highlights how we need to change our dialogue around sexual assault so we are getting to the truth and holding perpetrators accountable.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Well worth the listen.
Revisado: 12-31-20
I enjoyed this lecture just as I’ve enjoyed many of these lectures. My only criticism is that it was a bit repetitive and repeated certain details too often. I think midpoint reviews of certain details are helpful but there were too many here. In general this is an excellent survey of the topic and also provided helpful understanding of the economics, politics, and culture of the time period.
