Uncanny Valley Voice and Story that is almost good
Revisado: 01-11-25
AI definitely wrote the story as well as did the narration. Although the story was compelling, it contains a few continuity errors:
- Chekov’s Green-eyed Hottie is introduced as a possible lust interest but nope nothing ever happens.
- A character is introduced in the third act that we have never heard of before, In the span of a chapter he is her brother, her cousin, the brother of the Boston suiter.
- In act 1 it is established that her Bostonian Aunt gave her the locket with her dead parents pictures. Later she replaces their photo with Jeb’s (something only a robot would do). Then suddenly in act 3 it’s the locket Jeb gave her….Maybe she is a robot????
- Birth control is apparently so effective in 1800s Wyoming, that you can have sex 6 for six years and not get pregnant, but then immediately get pregnant when you are trying.
- How many times can one author write “A penny for your thoughts” ?
Good About the Story
- I actually appreciation the unnatural way that the husband and wife were kind and considerate of each other. I wish humans were more like this.
- The “author” seems to done their research on farming in that time period. Often that ‘s not the case with humans.
- The main character woman is treated with utmost respect in all situations. Not realistic but something you want to read.

Surprisingly good narrative
Revisado: 09-17-23
The Voice cast is top notch, and somehow this time shifting narrative avoids the logical loopholes that most narratives hold. It’s an interesting consideration of what redoing a year could look like.

Literary slapstick at its finest
Revisado: 07-04-22
An interesting point of view of a 60-year-old man who is the mayor of a small town. Not usually somebody’s perspective I would seek out. But his stalwart belief in God and the Saints and his great need to save his little town create Vincent tableau for Hijinx. It’s also really interesting to get his perspective on his daughters unread pregnancy and his attitude towards the other people in the town.

Scary but touching

I am happy to listen to a story from a different perspective than mine. The voices had so much empathy and unspoken pathos. I did have to take a posit the end because it was a little scary for me but then I’m a fraidy-cat.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Interesting Story - Total Lack of Racial Awareness
Revisado: 08-04-20
The details of the story in interesting told by an author from the same town as the killer. Although the author alludes to the victim shaming that happened, he never interrogates why the killer got away for so long. At no point does he mention that the killer literally got away with murder because he was a white "Christian" boy. When will we start to interrogate the role that sexism and racism played in empowering Serial Killers in the 1970s and 1980s? As a white woman, I can't even contemplate raping someone and then stabbing them to death. I also can't even imagine what would happen to a black man or woman who did the same thing. These serial killer stories are starting to get seriously boring without a critical interrogation of the socialization of white boys that literally let (or lets) them get away with murder. It is disingenuous to investigate everything about them but not their race and gender. I can recommend the TV series "Mindhunter" as a place where it is interrogated a little. I just wish for more.

Historia
Onward tackles the problem of educator stress, and provides a practical framework for taking the burnout out of teaching. Stress is part of the job, but when 70 percent of teachers quit within their first five years because the stress is making them physically and mentally ill, things have gone too far. Unsurprisingly, these effects are highest in difficult-to-fill positions such as math, science, and foreign languages, and in urban areas and secondary classrooms - places where we need our teachers to be especially motivated and engaged.

Narrator is a real dud!
Revisado: 08-11-18
30 seconds into the narration and I'm already distracted by the narrator. Really people?! You can't find a narrator who could be taught how to pronounce a few words in Spanish? We are a bilingual country. I know 100s of people who would have done a better job narrating. It ruins this great book. Please, please redo the narration with a professional who can pronounces words correctly.
Her ignorance unfortunately undermines the credibility of the whole book - a book that holds the key to helping educators across the country overcome burnout, sky-high workloads, and everyday challenges of supporting all students.

Historia
Sarah Vowell's special brand of armchair history makes the bizarre and esoteric fascinatingly relevant and fun. She takes us from the modern-day reenactment of an Indian massacre to the Mohegan Sun casino, from old-timey Puritan poetry, where "righteousness" is rhymed with "wilderness," to a Mayflower-themed waterslide. Throughout, The Wordy Shipmates is rich in historical fact, humorous insight, and social commentary by one of America's most celebrated voices.

Funny Scholarly Work
Revisado: 10-30-08
Sarah Vowels amusing history of the Puritans and the Native Americans around them, is engaging, scholarly, and, yes.... funny. It takes a good writer to subtly highlight the ironies of 17th Century New England. She liberally cites primary documents from the time period. Her greatest triumph is her ability to make the period come alive and relate it to today's America. The Author does a lovely job reading. Don't forget that she is a voice actress too. Matt Donaghy has always been a Big Mouth. But it's never gotten him in trouble, until the day Matt is accused of threatening to blow up Rocky River High School.
Ursula Riggs has always been an Ugly Girl. A loner with fierce, staring eyes, Ursula has no time for petty high school stuff like friends and dating, or at least that's what she tells herself. Ursula is content with minding her own business. And she doesn't even really know Matt Donaghy.

Prose that grabs you
Revisado: 11-03-05
I've secondary school for 10 years and spent time taling with hundreds of adolescents. The author really captures the voice of real teenagers, never as simple as adults think. The protaganists are complex, authentic, and well-written. The intro to the two young people really grabbed me. The narrative was very compelling.

Charming Series Gets a Refreshing Update
Revisado: 10-18-05
I've read all of the Agatha series, so that I feel that I've grown into middle age with her. But this mystery introduces many new interesting characters and provides a real reason for Agatha always bumping into dead bodies. Flawless narration. I have to say that the last line of the book had me saying aloud "What?!?" And then after a moment of shock, "When can I read the next book?"
