Historia
In Three Stations, Arkady Renko’s skills are put to their most severe test. Though he has been technically suspended from the prosecutor’s office for once again turning up unpleasant truths, he strives to solve a last case: the death of an elegant young woman whose body is found in a construction trailer on the perimeter of Moscow’s main rail hub. It looks like a simple drug overdose to everyone—except to Renko, whose examination of the crime scene turns up some inexplicable clues.

MCS Strikes out!
Revisado: 06-10-24
Having devoured the 1st 6 books in this series, i was very disappointed in this book. The story is a convoluted mish-mash of narratives, and the dialog is amateurish and clumsy. Top it off with a narrator who lacked the presence and capability of the previous narrators, and i was glad that this book ran only 7 hours. The sooner done, the better! I’ll move on to book 8, hopefully for a return to the high quality writing and narration of books 1-6. If not, it may be time to move on….

Former Inspector for the Moscow Militsiya, Arkady Renko, is summoned to Cuba to identify a liquefying corpse, dragged from the oily waters of Havana Bay. Renko finds himself in a decaying country, the final recess of Communism - a place where Russia is despised, exotic rituals take precedence and unexpected danger meets bewildering contradictions. After a harrowing experience that has left Renko on the verge of suicide, this mystery leads him on a trail of deceit that reaches international proportions, and gives him a reason to relish his own life again.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Excellent Listening
Revisado: 05-19-24
I have just finished my 2nd listen-through of this entire series of books and novellas, and I will certainly make my way through a third in the future. If you found your way - as I did - to this title from the apple tv adaptation of same, you will find your experience significantly elevated compared to the tv series. The listening experience is like doing a complicated jigsaw puzzle while inhaling nitrous oxide. Herron has deconstructed the collected works of Le Carre and Fleming and by dint of intricate plotting, intuitive character development, linguistic artistry and politically astute observational skill created a series that gets better with each read-through. These works are first and foremost satire, and these works….well, work! The narration by Gerard Doyle is among the best I’ve ever heard, and his characterizations breathe life into the cast, the conspiracies and the comedy. Listen to these books in order, and don’t omit the collection of novellas (Standing By The Wall), as the are on an equal par to the novels and add useful background detail to the series as a whole. Enjoy.

Excellent Political Thriller
Revisado: 02-13-24
If you like political thrillers in the best tradition of John Le Carre this book is highly recommended. I read this book after having read Harris' "Fatherland", another very enjoyable read. The story is compelling, and the text is full of wit and drama. The reader Roger Rees does an excellent job narrating this book. Read this, and enjoy!

Can’t Recommend This Book
Revisado: 11-20-23
This is a cliche ridden, ridiculously plotted, meandering book that reads like a freshman creative writing class assignment. The narrator’s delivery sounds like the cheerleader team captain. I found this story disappointing.

Enthralling Epic Masterfully Written and Performed
Revisado: 07-20-23
This book is a thoroughly enchanting historical novel. I found it to be entertaining as well as educational. I was unaware of the Frankist history and the book inspired me read more about the movement and its key personalities. The narration by both speakers is impeccable (pay no attention to comments to the contrary). I will listen to this one again.
