Great out of the gate!
Revisado: 02-25-25
What a fantastic first book! Alaina is a talented writer, and we are lucky to have her unique combination of Alainaness to keep us weird and entertained. The opening scene was terrifyingly gut-clenching, and I listened to the entire book in two sittings.
The only reason I rated 4/5 for performance was that I just couldn't jive with the guy's chipper voice. I wanted a calmer, steelier, lower pitched voice. Also, there were a few botched pronunciations, especially by the female voice. One that comes to mind should have been "olfactory," not "olafactory."
Regardless, the writing and story are both 5/5! I'm a hugely fanny-fan of Morbid and the dynamic duo with Ash, so I might be biased, but really, you should buy, read, listen to, and give copies to all the creepster-seeking peeps in your life.
In my dedication to Strategic Procrastination, I can go immediately into The Butcher Game. Can't wait! XOX to you both, girlies! Keepin it Weird! ❤️❤️

Historia
As a secular exorcist, Rachel H. Stavis has cleansed thousands of tormented people, from small children and Hollywood moguls to stay-at-home moms and politicians. But for many years, the horror screenwriter and novelist denied her gift. As a little girl, she began to see "monsters" floating around her bedroom or attached to other children. Told it was only her imagination, Rachel learned to ignore the things she saw. But a series of events in adulthood forced her to acknowledge her unique ability and embrace her power to heal.

Good intrigue and winding path to justice. I do wish the references to women "having partaken overmuch" of food would stop. Sexist and unfair to describe women but not men this way.
Sad to lose Lady P.

Historia
Edmund Harkins has gone missing. Few in Bampton liked him, knowing him to be a wife-beater and distinctly unsavory character, so when some hungry pigs unearth his corpse from a shallow grave, there is hardly an outpouring of grief. As bailiff, it is Hugh de Singleton’s duty to bring Edmund’s killer to justice. But where is he to start investigating when almost everyone in the village has a motive? And when everyone is pleased to see the scoundrel dead, who knows how far they might go to help someone get away with murder?

I still miss Arthur, but good to have his son stepping into the cast.
Did people during these times really not eat vegetables? Turnips, cabbage, carrots, leafy greens? Or have humble fruits like berries? Their diets seem very lacking. No kitchen gardens or eggs?

This volume did not disappoint! It's wonderful getting lost in the past with familiar characters. I enjoy the details about daily life, such as the food, buildings, and people. Arthur is my favorite character, followed by Kate! Then Sir Hugh, bless his heart.

Historia
Fat Talk argues for a reclaiming of “fat,” which is not synonymous with “unhealthy,” “inactive,” or “lazy.” Talking to researchers and activists, as well as parents and kids across a broad swath of the country, Sole-Smith lays bare how America’s focus on solving the “childhood obesity epidemic” has perpetuated a second crisis of disordered eating and body hatred for kids of all sizes. She exposes our society’s internalized fatphobia and elucidates how and why we need to stop “preventing obesity” and start supporting kids in the bodies they have.

Foundational reading for humans
Revisado: 06-16-23
So grateful for Virginia's brain, heart, soul (sole;), body, wisdom, tribe, and all who helped her bring forth this critically needed work. The scope of the work is immense, exceeding my expectations. As a person who has struggled back and forth, in and out of a larger body from childhood, I can testify to the hurt, damage, and permanent injury wrought by a culture enslaved by diet culture. Regardless of one's body size, the psychological straight jacket of being convinced that our vessels are unacceptable no matter what we (increasingly radically) do to change them, turns each of us into shadows of who we are and what we can do in the short time we have on this planet. Imagine what we could accomplish together without the shackles of this misdirection! Imagine all of us being able to turn away from patent untruths told by generations about our human meat suits, and toward a cure for cancer, a solution to our precious planet tipping toward disaster, or a way to feed everyone? The stakes have never been higher. We need our whole selves back, thank you. Let's be kind to ourselves, each other, and our *children* through a complete paradigm shift with the practical tools and deeply explored insight of this lovely, beautifully wise woman.

Historia
What is so important about the year 1215? There are some history buffs who may be able to tell you that 1215 is the year the Magna Carta was signed, but there are even fewer who know that King John of England’s acceptance of this charter was only one of four major, world-changing events of this significant year. In fact, the social, cultural, political, geographical, and religious shifts that occurred in this year alone had such a huge impact on the entire world, it warrants an entire course of study for anyone truly interested in the pivotal points of history....

Historia
Vladimir Putin is the world’s most dangerous man. Alone among world leaders, he has the power to reduce the United States and Europe to ashes in a nuclear firestorm and has threatened to do so. He invades his neighbors, most recently Ukraine, meddles in western elections, and orders assassinations inside and outside Russia. His regime is autocratic and deeply corrupt. But that is only half the story. Unflinching, hard-hitting, and objective, Philip Short’s biography gives us the whole tale, up to the present day.

Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe", a region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. It has also been, and continues to be, pivotal in the course of world events. A History of Eastern Europe offers a sweeping 1,000-year tour with a particular focus on the region's modern history.

Historia
It's difficult to imagine a nation with a history more compelling for Americans than Russia. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, this was the nation against which we measured our own nation's values and power and with whom war, if it ever came, could spell unimaginable catastrophe for our planet.Yet many Americans have never had the opportunity to study Russia in depth, and to see how the forces of history came together to shape a future so different from the dreams of most ordinary Russian people, eager to see their nation embrace Western values of progress, human rights, and justice.

Torn
Revisado: 10-29-22
Overall, this was effective in engaging my attention and interest, especially considering the sheer magnitude of the subject. I learned, which is the point.
However, persevering through the speaker's unrelenting and innumerable insertions of "uh" was grueling. I'm shocked that the publisher would move forward with this presentation. This filler in a lengthy and ostensibly professional audio is unbelievable. I'm glad I did not actually pay to listen, or I would have demanded a refund. This is an inexcusable novice's condition; coming from a well-regarded professor points to lecture not being his strong suit. The material is good—why not have it read by someone who does not speak with the effect of punishing the listener with an aural Gatling gun?
On another note, it is October of 2022. Appending the series with chapters on Putin's biographical origins through his first term, the Medvedev years, his most recent decade in power, a focused look at the Russia / Ukraine relationship, and the development of Putin into the aggressive autocrat he has become, would be a popular and appreciated work. Spasibo.
