I couldn't finish this. Chase, the half brother was over the top ridiculous and annoying. I appreciate slapstick humor, but this sounded like it was written by a 7th grader. Don't waste your credit.

Could not finish it
Revisado: 06-10-22
I get that the love interests are academics and whatnot, but good lord it was boring. I ended up skipping to the end of the book and listened to the last hour or so. I just couldn't listen to the droning on and on about Pharoahs and physics. If you're in to those things, this book is for you, because it's basically a textbook with snippets of a personal story sprinkled in. I think I ended up listening to a total of about 3 hours, and I got the gist of the story without all the textboom lessons. The narration was fine, so maybe I'll use this to help me drift off when I can't sleep.

Kinda cliché
Revisado: 03-28-22
I had a hard time with this book. Don't get me wrong, I love a good cop story, but the whole, "When I get close to someone, they die, so I'll just sleep around" thing is played out. Sloan played the pity card way too much, and the relationship between her and Avery was extremely shallow. They got married, and the whole relationship was based on sex. Not actual love, mutual respect, and emotional closeness, just sex. I won't give away anything, but after the BIG THING happened in the middle of the book, I had to skip through to the last half hour, because I just couldn't with the "it's all my fault" thing anymore. I need stronger characters to keep my interest.

Hard to finish
Revisado: 03-25-21
I read the other books in the series, but this will probably be my last. It could have been way shorter, and it seemed like the author was just rambling on at times just to make a word quota. And we get it, Gwen loves her kids, wants to protect her kids, would kill for her kids, only thinks about her kids, etc, etc. I should have counted how many times she said some version of that in the book, because I'm sure it makes up a third of the word count. If she really cared about her kids, she would have moved to a new town during the last book. And even Sam is on the, "I love my kids" (or more specifically, Connor) bandwagon. I ended up fast forwarding through a lot of Connor's chapters, because both he and Lannie (sp?) do ridiculously stupid things at the most opportune times, (flirting with, and kissing a girl you just met the same day you've been kidnapped, when you're supposed to be worried about being killed???) , so it was a bit too over the top stupid behavior for kids who are supposed to be part of a family that prides itself on their safely. The plot itself was ok, but it was just tough to slog through.

Stop licking your lips!!
Revisado: 03-25-20
I definitely struggled to finish this. It had potential, but needs some work. There were too many repetitive phrases, especially about the characters licking their lips. My own lips were chapped just by reading variations of that phrase so many times. The love story between Rylee and Kenzie was too pressured. Sure, they were ex-lovers in college, but the way Rylee behaved about Kenzie having a child was over the top. I'd hope a real mother would take her behavior as the red flag it is, and dump her, instead of pushing her child to embrace their (2 week!) relationship. And having Rylee physically intimidate and threaten the daughter over her talking back to her mom, especially since she barely knew the kid was way too much. On the other hand, Kenzie is nothing, if not a perpetual victim, so I suppose behavior like this is to be expected. I'm just going to assume everything turns out fine in the sequel, because I can't bring myself to read it if it's written like this one.

The narrator's male voices made them sound like Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants. No offense to the author, but the story was contrived and predictable. I don't recommend this book at all.

Way too repetitive
Revisado: 07-15-19
I didn't read the reviews before I purchased this book, which was a big mistake, and waste of money. I read the first book, but figured the author's writing would have gotten better by this book. I was wrong. The writing is way too repetitive. We get it, Alex and Cassidy are in love. I don't have to hear the over the top proclamations of their undying love every third page. It sounds clunky and juvenile, and it gets really old, really fast. The book is long winded, but doesn't really progress much, since so many of the same statements/sentiments are repeated, such as, Cassidy is the most beautiful woman on the planet, and turns heads everywhere she goes, her congressman ex-husband is a bad guy, and doesn't like lesbians, Alex is the best FBI/NSA agent that has ever lived, and everyone who knows her says so. The only problem with that last statement, is Alex has yet to actually prove why she's the best agent who's ever lived, and I don't think getting shot by someone who's never fired a gun before counts. I don't want to trash the whole book, because if the author could get past the "I love you more. No, I love YOU more. No, I love you more than anyone has ever loved anyone, and my 7 year old son is now your son, even though we haven't been together that long, and his legal father is still in the picture, but we'll get our attorneys to fix that"--thing, she could have a decent political thriller on her hands. Cut out all the repetitive filler, and have your characters speak like regular people, and it could be decent. However, I will not be purchasing anymore books in this series.

She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Too repetitive
Revisado: 01-17-18
If you like repetitive chapters and filler, this book is for you. It's like there was a word minimum, and the author was struggling to fill it, so he used unnecessarily metaphors and repeated things over and over to fill a quota. I hate leaving a book unfinished, so I skipped ahead on chapters, and found out I didn't even miss anything important. If this is a foreshadowing of the author's writing style, I won't purchase any more of his books.

This was one of those books where both of the main characters were annoying--but that was the point--it made it hard to guess the end when both of them were so flawed. I enjoyed the book, and the narrator was so excellent.

I spent so much time rolling my eyes while listening to this as an audio book, I gave myself a headache. How Grace was kept captive all this time is beyond me. There were so many opportunities for escape, I started to assume Grace just wanted to stay captive. I finished the book only because I spent a full Audible credit on it.
