Historia
After an exchange student with bubonic plague turns up in a Reno hospital, a contractor with identical symptoms dies in Los Angeles. The government‘s official stance is that the cases are isolated and the outbreak is under control. But George Mack, a 30-year public health veteran, quickly realizes this is no ordinary plague. The death toll is too high, and the spread pattern make no sense. As Reno’s hospitals fill with victims, Mack begins to believe that there is more to the epidemic than the CDC is letting on - and that he must take drastic steps if he hopes to save his city.

Excellent!!!
Revisado: 03-25-25
I listen to a lot of apocalyptic genre books, some are so bad I only listen to a few chapters. Some are pretty okay and I get through it and find good things in it but there are often many glaring things wrong.
This is a book which is great! The progression is what I believe is realistic. This was in the freebie section, and I was very pleased, enough that I don’t regret spending a credit on the next in the trilogy. I hope there’s not too long to wait for the third!!
Characters are believable, the science that I know enough about all seemed pretty accurate, I wish more in the genre were this good.

What would you do if all modern technology vanished overnight? ‘The Long Night’ follows the Winter family as they fight to survive a devastating EMP attack that plunges America into darkness. This cyber-attack survival thriller is a must-read for fans of "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen, "Lights Out" by David Crawford, and "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel. After a cyber-attack, followed by an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), the Winter family from Harbour Island, Florida, faces an unprecedented struggle for survival. Former military officer John Winter and his son, Jack, ...

Stands above the crowd in the genre
Revisado: 03-12-25
I’m generally not a fan of virtual voice, but I think it’s either getting better, or I’m getting used to it. Still the usual virtual voice issues of odd inflections are present.
A very good storyline. It was interesting and made me want to get the next book. The story is complex but not overly complicated, has characters who seem like individuals we would like to know, and I usually listen to audio books to help me go to sleep, but this one was hard because it was interesting enough that I would stay awake longer listening to what happens next, so it made it into the “must listen while awake” category, and at the end I was eager to listen to the next book.
And that’s where the virtual voice really threw me off; in the next book virtual voice is a black woman. I was expecting the same virtual voice. Then, I was thinking that it seemed that, if it is virtual voice, shouldn’t the user be able to choose options in the narrator? I prefer a male narrator, just easier on the ears in general. I’m sure I’ll get through on the story but I do NOT like the virtual voice of the narration of the next book.

Historia
Jim Wyatt had always said that if everything fell apart, he didn’t want to just survive - he didn’t want to notice. When the world did crash, his family’s home of Stonemont became not only a refuge, but a place where it might be possible to start over again, and reclaim the American ideal. Among the many novels in the SHTF/TEOTWAWKI genre, The Reversion stands apart – and, perhaps, alone. It does not follow the survival learning curve of the unprepared or minimally-prepared, as so many excellent books have already done so well. Rather, it is the story of a man who was prepared, and ...

A cut above in the apocalypse genre
Revisado: 01-20-25
I have been on an apocalyptic genre audiobook thing for several years now. They usually aren’t worth a credit, so I tend to peruse whatever is available free at the moment, and then pay for additional books in a series if the first book convinces me it’s worthwhile.
This book is what I hope for in the genre. Too many are a gore-fest, or full of one dimensional psychopaths making up most of the characters. This seems more “realistic”. There are some pretty bad people, but it’s not all about that. It’s about how to be the good people, how to manage situations which are probable in a catastrophic situation.
It has given me some idea of goals for my “prepper light” general plans. I especially liked the idea of designing a garage or specific rooms with a faraday cage to protect against an EMP.
Virtual Voice is getting better, but it’s still not great. An AR-15 is often called an “R” or “Are” … and a .22 or .380 is a “point two two” and “point three eight zero” which kinda throws you off at first, and is a constant reminder that this is virtual voice with no real brain. Also the usual inflection issues you’ll know if you listen to many things in virtual voice. There is probably some kind of editing which should be done if a book is going to be narrated with virtual voice in which the text is changed so it will read how a human would know to read it, but the virtual voice mistakes are fairly consistent across a multitude of books so it seems a “find and replace” for commonly mispronounced words could be done to change .22 to “twenty-two” as a normal prep for virtual voice narration.

Better than usual in the genre
Revisado: 12-08-24
It was a good book, storyline which was entertaining and kept me attentive through a road trip and other things. There are a lot of apocalyptic fiction I will start and then delete after a few chapters, but I really enjoyed this series.
The virtual voice still needs work, but I’m sure a lot of books wouldn’t make it to audio book with the expense of a good narrator.

"I didn't realize how much I would miss grocery shopping until it was gone." Life was pretty good. The love of Alice's life had proposed, they were proud new homeowners, and she'd just landed a great promotion at work. Things were going to plan. Well, they were, until the Red Death struck. Billions dead in a matter of weeks. The survivors are few and far between. No one is safe. Life will never be the same again.

One of the better post apocalyptic stories
Revisado: 10-30-24
The people seemed real, the interactions as well. In this genre, this basic thing is rare, and I appreciated that this story did not descend into a cartoonish mess of unrealistic bad people everywhere. It was a good potential projection of what could happen in such a situation with real people.
I’m really looking forward to the next installment in this series.

I would have been mad if I had used a credit
Revisado: 02-17-24
I'm listening to a lot of books in the audible plusses section lately, and hung on out of just running out of free post apocalyptic to listen to, and I've decided to quit in the third book. I kept thinking it might get better, and they're free, but I never would have started the second book if it wasn't free.
the characters are just so unbelievable. the premise was a different take on the zombie thing, and I was kind of interested to learn more about how that plays out, but the characters are exceptionally stupid if they're one of the good guys, and stupidly psychotic/psychopathic/evil if they're one of the bad guys, with a 50/50 ratio of good guys/bad guys.

Some say that this work, found in a safe-box in the port area of Kowloon, was dictated because Bronze Age Pervert refuses to learn what he calls "the low and plebeian art of writing". It isn't known how this work was transcribed. The contents are pure dynamite. He explains that you live in ant farm. That you are observed by the lords of lies, ritually probed. Ancient man had something you have lost: confidence in his instincts and strength, knowledge in his blood. BAP shows how the Bronze Age mind-set can set you free from this iron prison and help you embark on the path of power.

It sounded interesting, but once I got into it a bit I was baffled and shocked by a stream of consciousness rambling of a crazy man. Vulgar and weird. I wish I had started listening soon after purchasing so I could have returned this trash.

I love stories about Mars, and this was a very good story which kept me very entertained for drives for a few weeks. I ended up getting another trillogy by this author which I also enjoyed a lot and am not looking for my next listen. If you’re a fan of mars stories this and it’s predecessor are must reads.

Historia
The potato - humble, lumpy, bland, familiar - is a decidedly unglamorous staple of the dinner table. Or is it? John Reader's narrative on the role of the potato in world history suggests we may be underestimating this remarkable tuber. From domestication in Peru 8,000 years ago to its status today as the world's fourth largest food crop, the potato has played a starring - or at least supporting - role in many chapters of human history.

Fascinating
Revisado: 12-23-15
I'm actually listening to this for a third time. The narrator does a good job and has a pleasant voice, and the wide range of history covered and how the potato was an instrumental part of the direction of the world is fascinating. It gives a richer appreciation for what we may have come to think of as a basic and cheap food.

In 1845 Henry David Thoreau, one of the principal New England Transcendentalists, left the small town of Concord for the country. Beside the lake of Walden he built himself a log cabin and returned to nature, to observe and reflect – while surviving on eight dollars a year. From this experience emerged Walden, one of the great classics of American literature.

This is a must read.
Revisado: 11-06-15
The narration conveyed the story very well without being monotone or overly dramatic, and so I think was excellent, because such a great work must be conveyed without the narrator adding to or subtracting from the work.
I want to find my own place in the wilderness now, and plant beans and subsist on rice.
Over a century and a half and this is still as relevant, possibly more so, as the day it was published. with the exception that the great classics are available in English today without having to learn Greek to read The Iliad. Include this in your collection, you won't be sorry. I've listened to this many times now, and will likely never tire of it.
