There were two things that bothered me about this audiobook: the two-dimensional characters, and the unrelenting woe is me tone. While I understand that the main character was the victim of toxic parental relationships, this is all we seem to find out about her. She spends her time worrying and wallowing. There were no bright spots. In addition, the other characters felt much like placeholders. The bad guys reminded me of pantomime villains twirling their moustaches. It was never entirely clear why the antagonists were determined to victimize the main character. I also had trouble understanding the main character’s motivations. She was set on protecting a town full of people who were abusive and uncaring. There was a lot of time spent describing what the main character felt or how she reacted (cheeks burned, stomach dropped, swooned, swallowed back bile, etc.), but almost no time spent on why she valued her town. I had to assume she was acting out of a need to play the martyr.

It’s hard to rate the narrator. The unchanging tone guaranteed the narration would sound monotonous.

The reason I’m writing this review is because there was one scene where I found myself yelling at the main character for doing something incredibly stupid. It angered me enough that I had to take the time to write something. It’s a shame because the author’s writing seemed reasonably sound and the premise had potential.

It held my interest, but the premise was implausible. I felt like rolling my eyes at the end. Sometimes it was difficult to differentiate between what what the protagonist was listening to on a tape and what was a flashback. That got a little confusing.

While the writing style was a bit too ornate for my taste and distracted me sometimes, I enjoyed the story.

The only reason I finished this excruciating audiobook is because it is a part of a series I picked up on sale, and I wanted to be sure I knew what happened in case it became relevant in future books.

None of the characters were fully developed, and most of the time I couldn't understand their choices. The rest of the time, they infuriated me. AND there is no main character. There are several characters who are present throughout, but I wouldn't say any one of them was the protagonist. This might have been interesting if there were multiple POVs, but no.

There's no sense of a resolution at the end even though the other books in the series work as stand alones.

The narrator's accents were distracting.

The suspense and horror of this audiobook were killed by seeing too much of the scary stuff. The more something is described, the less frightening it becomes. I also found it hard to be invested in this story because the characters were fairly one dimensional.

The narrator was okay, but the voices she used for some of the characters were too rough and a bit distracting.

Frustrating story and characters

I had great difficulty believing a cop would bring along an immature, emotional, unpredictable psychic to conduct witness/suspect interviews. I also cringed every time said psychic chatted with the witness/suspect as if they were out for drinks.

What cop would risk their career to bring a civilian along on interviews, especially when the case in question has no real importance to the cop? He didn't seem passionate about it, and it wasn't personal to him. It was just a random unsolved murder on its way to cold case status.

The characters behaved in ways contrary to common sense, and when I heard that the psychic was supposed to be thirty rather than something closer to thirteen, I wanted to return the title and get my $4 back (got it when it was a deal of the day, I think).

Unfortunately, I like to try and figure out who done it, so I kept on listening. Even more unfortunately, The psychic used her talent to solve the case, and she didn't share her specialized knowledge until the reveal. There was no way to have an opinion one way or the other.

To sum up, I was frustrated all the way through and then disappointed by the end. Oh, and don't even get me started on the manufactured drama at the conclusion. Jeeze.

Overall, an entertaining listen, but I get more out of a story when I connect to one or more of the characters. I didn't like, and could not relate to, any of the characters in this one. At times, it felt like they were written by an adolescent male. If you don't have the same need for well developed and relatable characters, then I would recommend this one. It is fun and interesting.
The narrator performed well, but his female voices were distracting at times.

A complicated dungeon makes for more exposition, but I still gave it 5 stars because I adore Princess Donut.
