27 years - what patience you all had to have had. Love how Jacob’s memory is kept alive. Funny thing is my grandson recently switched his soccer number to 11 and when I asked him for a luck number for my lottery numbers he said 11! Jacob and I share a birthday so I will think of him every year.

The man who should have been there to help protect me, love me, and teach me about life did the opposite. I was told to keep quiet and not tell anyone our secret. A secret that filled me with fear and shame. I was sexually abused from ages five to twelve.

Historia
Dave Pelzer was brutally abused as a child by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. She considered him a slave - no longer a boy, but an "it". He was physically and mentally tortured and starved. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare he experienced behind closed doors, and his father was aware of the abuse but turned to denial and alcohol. The abuse only fueled a determination to survive and become stronger.

Historia
On January 14, 2018, a 17-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings - ranging in age from two to 29 - were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered.

Historia
They all thought he was gone. But he was alive and trapped inside his own body for ten years. In January 1988 Martin Pistorius, aged 12, fell inexplicably sick. First, he lost his voice and stopped eating. Then he slept constantly and shunned human contact. Doctors were mystified. Within 18 months, he was mute and wheelchair-bound. Martin's parents were told an unknown degenerative disease left him with the mind of a baby and less than two years to live.

Family’s determination
Revisado: 07-18-24
Initially didn’t like the accent but then realized it was part of his culture! What a family. Although his mom may have been distanced for a while, no one ever gave up on him. I was very angry when he described the person feeding him being so mean. I really wanted to do the same to that person. My uncle lived in a state hospital much of his life because of an early childhood disease that made him unable to talk or hear so while we always visited him regularly and he eventually ended up in a regular home with others similar to him, hope he never had to endure those kinds of awful acts. Hope Martin is doing well! Going to do some research on him to see what he is up to!

Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

Wow what a book. It is a shame though that the Captain was court marshaled after he did what he could to help his men survive.
