Overly wordy
Revisado: 03-20-22
I loved the story. But I think it would have benefited from serious editing. If it were history, then all the minute detail would have been reasonable. As a novel they were overwhelming and boring. As it is I am left wondering about what happened to all the characters after the war. Telling me to research the information seems unfair. Would a few more words have been too much trouble after reading all the others.

Worst narration ever
Revisado: 05-12-19
I usually won't complain about anyone willing to read out loud to me. It's a luxury. But Ann Marie Lee needs to be narrating books for kindergarten and younger. So melodramatic; so breathy; so many pregnant pauses I wanted to puke. I couldn't hear the story through the narration. To be fair, the story may read well and be excellent, I couldn't tell.

Historia
In Rachel Hore's A Place of Secrets, auction house appraiser Jude leaves London for her dream job at Starbrough Hall, an estate in the countryside, examining and pricing the manuscripts and instruments of an eighteenth-century astronomer. She is welcomed by Chantal Wickham and Jude feels close to the old woman at once: they have both lost their husbands. Hard times have forced the Wickham family to sell the astronomer's work, their land and with it, the timeworn tower that lies nearby. The tower was built as an observatory for astronomer Anthony Wickham and his daughter Esther, and it served as the setting for their most incredible discoveries.

A Very Good Story
Revisado: 01-27-18
What made the experience of listening to A Place of Secrets the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed this book. It was the story of multiple generations of different women that all came together. Yes it was a bit too coincidental to be real, but it was satisfying in the end. My only complaint is the narrator and her fault is not hers alone. Why must they whisper when the character whispers? The narrative says the person is whispering. But when it is read in a whisper, I cannot hear what is said. I listen in a car while commuting and I have the volume set as high as it will go and still I can't hear. It is so annoying.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jude tried so hard to get along with her prickly sister.
How could the performance have been better?
Read so I can hear it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
In the end I did cry

This was a struggle. While the plot had merits, the characters felt one dimensional. l hope there are no more attempts at continuing the series.

Loved the story
Revisado: 03-02-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Princess Elizabeth's Spy to be better than the print version?
I loved this story. It is well written and entertaining. I have to say I the print version is better in this case.
What did you like best about this story?
I like learning some of the details of Windsor Castle
What didn’t you like about Susan Duerden’s performance?
I love audio books. I adore it when someone reads to me. I have a very long commute daily and this allows me to enjoy reading. But this narrator has a habit of 'whispering' dialog when the character whisper. I am hearing impaired and could not understand her. So I missed a good bit of the story. And some of her accents were difficult to catch. I really prefer when they read the story and dramatize it.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-27-11
I read the reviews. I liked the story. But the narration was the worst I have heard. I am ready to forgive a readers accents just to have a book read to me. But this was so bad. And not just the accents; the phrasing was appalling. She stopped where there should not have been any pauses. She strung sentences together so they made no sense. I will look for other books by the author but not the reader.

Historia
A pretty, popular teenager never returned from her secret tryst in Skeleton Canyon. Perhaps it was a youthful rage or savage passion that ripped the life from a child of privilege and abandoned her broken body to the cold Arizona night. Or maybe she stumbled onto something terrible, something too dangerous to know. Now dark secrets about a future hideously destroyed are pulling Sheriff Joanna Brady of Cochise County into a lethal nest of lies and greed.

Good story
Revisado: 04-16-11
I really liked the story, but the narrator drove me crazy. I rarely critize someone who will read to me, but her phrasing was odd. Her emphasis really didn't seem appropriate and her accent didn't seem right for the southwest. It was all I could do to finish listening. I know she has done many books; maybe she was having an off day on this one

Booring and implausible
Revisado: 10-22-07
I found listening to this to be very tedious. The technology that was presented as cutting edge, was easy for me to figure out and second guess. The preaching was unnecessary. The narrator put me to sleep. I skipped much of the second disk. I wish I had saved my money and time.

The story is very good if you like medical mysteries. It is well written and has the feel of fiction. But I had some trouble with the readers voice. I could not understand everything she said and had to go back frequently.
