*Spoilers ahead*
I typically love this author, but I couldn't understand why the h kept giving the H chance after chance after chance. She tells him that her feelings aren't casual, he tells her he knows, and then he backtracks and claims what they had going was always going to be casual? He asks her to stay with him, so she does, and he freaks out when he gets home later and she is *gasp!* there in his home? I mean, come on. She keeps handing him her heart on a platter, and he keeps tossing it in the trash. But in the end, he decides he loves her, so we're just meant to magically believe that she can trust him this time and that he somehow he won't do another 180? This guy may have been a great friend to her growing up, but the only true substance in their relationship took place in the past.

I couldn't get through more than a couple chapters of this, and I always finish books. The narrator is just awful- weird pauses and cadence, no emotion, and impossible to listen to and actually enjoy or even pay attention to the book. Easily the worst audible book I've ever "read", and I've got over 2,000 books in my audible library, so that's saying something. I actually went back to check the narrator so I can avoid her in the future, and realized that it was an AI narrator. On the one hand, at least I dont feel guilty for just a bad review now, but yeah, it now all makes sense. This is one job you should leave to humans. Yuck.

I went into this expecting a cute, light, sweet palate cleanser.

This book is not that.

I laughed. I sobbed at one point. I got angry and a little dejected. I laughed and then cried some more. This book is a beautiful, relatable, emotional roller-coaster, illustrating so many of the growing pains that family, friends, and partners all navigate.

And now I have a book hangover. (And truly do need to find that light, easy palate cleanser.)

Be prepared to feel all the things. And enjoy.

She's a doormat who never stands up for herself

The story is charming, and it could have been so good. But it reads like a Cliffs Notes version and is missing a lot. I also have a big problem with h, who is a doormat for all the awful behavior the H's family heaps upon her, and they do that for YEARS.

Spolier alert- Her finance cheats on her repeatedly while she's pregnant before the wedding. Her almost MIL blames her for being born poor and tells her she doesn't deserve her darling son, cheater or not. h leaves him, he goes and gets drunk and then drives drunk and dies. MIL then has her physically drug out of the funeral, roasts her in the media for causing his death, and has her arrested for retrieving her stuff from their former shared apartment. She cuts h off feom the entire family. Oh, and then sues her for the engagement ring, serving her at her work to try to get her fired. Then, years later, when they discover h had a baby, MIL sues for custody of h and H's daughter and calls h all sorts of horrible things and tells the courts lies about h being unfit to parent the granddaughter she hasn't even met? And it's all ok? She just keeps taking it, over and over and over. Yuck.

I loved this duet, but after a ton of build up, things sort of ended abruptly. Or maybe it all just felt anticlimactic and rushed. Sort of like the author ran out of steam and just wanted to move on.

Sexist, elitist hypocrite seeks doormat

It's not often that I write a review. And I listen to an average of a book a day. So when I say that the h in this book is so unlikable, that I nearly returned the book without finishing it, it's after having listened to over 3000 delightfully dark and smutty books with all sorts of alphaholes as charracters.
Spoilers ahead, and these are just a few of the examples- he can go to a high class brothel as a regular member and pay for sex, lapdances, etc. But she, poor and struggling to support 3 people, can't work in the bar because of the men who go there. He makes her quit, and then goes back after promising he'd give up his elite membership. But it's "different" somehow for him. So when she begs for her job back, he starts threatening her. Then she gets drugged and ends up in the hospital, and his response is to further victimize her and take her son away from her in court. He admits it's to control her into permanently quitting her bartending job, but then later claims he was only thinking of their son's best interests.
Oh, and he likes BDSM, but what he really means is that he likes to be rough, and she isn't allowed to speak up when he hurts her. She does tell him it hurts her two different times and he tells her that he needs this and that pain is good. Not exactly healthy.
I'm usually the first in line to fall for the damaged bad boy, the alpha, the bully. But this guy is just toxic.
The only thing that this book had going for it was the supporting charracters. I hope they get their own stories with less toxicity and hypocrisy.

This absolutely needs to become a series. It was charming and funny and had a delightful slow burn. My only complaint was that it ended. I really hope we get books about the other brothers, and maybe even their sister's backstory (hint, hint).

I usually adore anything by Lauren Blakely, but I'm honestly not sure what just happened. It's like half of the book was missing. Or maybe she just wrote a handful of great scenes, got bored, and tried to tie them together with a few "12 days ago", "9 years ago", and "6 months laters"? Who knows. But this was little more than a lead up into the next couples story in this series. The only saving grace were the amazing narrators (as usual, they are superb).

Cute, with a glaring flaw. The books ends without mention of the whole reason they had to get married in the first place. What happened with their case? Will it be addressed in a later book? Did the author just sort of forget? It's a little frustrating. Added, there did not appear to much research done on the legalities of immigration; my husband is a Brit and we know more about the process from a quick visit to the USCIS website than the storyline in the book (or maybe the author just got it wrong and didn't do her homework?)... Otherwise, it is a cute story though. I'll probably give the second book a try before I make up my mind about the series.

And now the wait for book two begins.
The female narrator has a horrible fake Bostonian accent, but once you get past that, it's a great book. Can't wait to see what happens with the other Belles, and I have high hopes for two particular brothers...
