Historia
Outsider. Hero. Rogue. If any man can do the impossible it’s Richard Sharpe. And the impossible is exactly what the formidable Captain Sharpe is asked to do when he’s sent on an undercover mission to a small village in the Spanish countryside, far behind enemy lines. For the quiet, remote village, sitting high above the Almaraz bridge, is about to become the center of a battle for the future of Europe. Two French armies march towards the bridge, one from the North and one from the South. If they meet, the British are lost.

A pale imitation of earlier books.
Revisado: 12-11-24
It is hard to believe this book was actually written by Bernard Cornwell. The characters were cardboard cut outs of their former selves. The dialogue and interpersonal relationships between the characters was strangely off. If this had been the first Sharpe’s book I had read it would’ve been the last one. Hopefully there will be no more like it to tarnish Sharpe’s fine reputation. I feel bad about reading the narration as a three. The narrator was working with what he had which was not much.

Historia
Spenser is forced by loyalty into an alien world where violence is a way of lie and outsiders enter at a lethal risk. When Spenser's cohort Hawk is hired by the tenants of a gang-plagued Boston housing project known as "Double Deuce," he enlists his friend's aid. A friend's girl and her infant daughter have been gunned down. Though the act at first appears to be an accidental drive-by shooting, it soon becomes clear that it was premeditated murder.

Good story, mediocre narrator

Reader disappoints.
Revisado: 08-06-21
I can’t criticize the readers acting skills. However, I’m not sure why he thinks Hawk should sound like Huggy Bear, that Quirk and Belson should sound like Lenny and Sqiggy and Susan like a cross between Tallulah Bankhead and Katherine Hepburn. It’s like he never read the books before starting his narration. Oh well.

Tolerable only because of Simon Vance’s narration
Revisado: 09-18-19
Ambitious story idea but became way too fanciful with pat resolutions. Disappointing to have Stieg Larsson‘s complex characters reduced to cartoon cutouts. It was like having the characters from the Jane Austen novel dropped into a Beverly Hills 90210 script. If Lisbeth Salander were a living person I shudder to think what she revenge she would have taken on those who put her and her compatriots in that story.

Not so much

I wish I had read what "Jill from Pittsburg" said before I purchased this book. Her experience and impressions are nearly identical to mine. Sorry to drag down the average, but this book was not very helpful in teaching me more Spanish.
