Appropriate to the situation
Revisado: 04-29-25
Reviewers found the characters unsympathetic and unlikable. Accurate, but appropriate. The story did have significant twists and false leads. It was very good and kept my attention throughout. This was in the Plus catalog.

Historia
The double murder of a married couple in a small Washington town draws FBI forensic linguist Raisa Susanto into an investigation that mirrors a decades-old crime. Twenty-five years ago—to the day—Alex Parker murdered his parents, then took his own life, leaving behind a note admitting everything. Raisa, paired with forensic psychologist Callum Kilkenny, uses her skills to read between the lines. Especially now that paranoid postings on a conspiracy thread suggest that Alex was a victim himself.

Did not see that coming
Revisado: 04-11-25
A page turner without gratuitous violence, gore, language or adult content. The character development is as thorough as possible without giving away plot clues. The action and story arc are subtle, while keeping interest and pace.

Complex but riveting

Another episodic cliffhanger. Major and minor characters act in the storyline with a ghost further past. Lots of space opera military action with classic banter.

Another great Department Q story
Revisado: 07-20-24
The character development was mostly on the title character. The Q crew remained in stasis. I am reading the series out of order, as they come on sale, so I may be a bit confused on the details.

What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Revisado: 02-21-24
Another great installment of the series. Placed outside of London, all the action takes place in Wales and the northern country, the supporting cast was missing. Even Hamish made very few contributions. It was a satisfying read and like any good travel experience, it will be good to get back home, having had a break from the familiar.
