Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Beautiful and Bittersweet
Revisado: 03-04-25
I loved this book! I have read several Kristin Hannah books and each one is excellent! Like many of her books, this is a story of hardship, but within the hardships, the beauty of the human spirit, specifically the strength of a woman’s spirit. There were several times throughout this book that I would be frustrated with a character, but not because they weren’t well written because I can’t fathom the things they went through, let alone how I would handle them. The character development in this book is excellent. There is such a beautiful bittersweet storyline.

Another amazing book by Ariel Lawhon!
Revisado: 02-26-25
I read the Frozen River first and loved it so much, I immediately looked for more of her books. I decided on this book next and it did not disappoint. I loved this book and its characters as much as the first. Nancy is brave, bold and inspiring. I love historical fiction, especially when based on true events. This book is very well written and the narration is excellent.

As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

This book captivated me from almost the first chapter. I absolutely loved the main character, she was strong and outspoken, but without being obnoxious. I loved the storyline, and the narration was excellent. This was my first book by Ariel Lawhon and I loved it so much, I went on and read two more of her books. Really enjoy this author.

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.
