A wonderful hot mess
Revisado: 11-08-24
I think this is one of my guilty pleasure SJM books because it's a lovely hot mess from start to finish. Enjoyed every second. It is not a well-written story, but it is damn entertaining. Evans really helps in carrying it all.

Historia
Until 1939, World War I was known as “the war to end all wars”, but when Nazi Germany capped its mounting aggression against its neighbors by invading Poland, Europe was plunged into a second global conflict. It threatened the entire continent as well as the far-flung colonial possessions claimed by the French, the British, and the Dutch. German triumphs saw nation after nation fall, until only Great Britain remained defiant against Hitler’s dreams of conquest.

Nice rundown for WW2
Revisado: 11-08-24
IDK what the other user is talking about, the narrator did great and had emotion (Smith is actually my favorite narrator for Hourly History). Gives a nice summary of WW2 and how it happened, good for beginners. It had me invested in this telling, although i knew what was gonna happen. You should give it a listen.

SJM's best book
Revisado: 07-28-24
I can't believe it, but it's true. this is Sarah's best work. she showed us her characters struggling and gave us some real development. I was quite pleased. especially with Manon. too bad the rest of her novels don't hit like this one.

It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

DNF
Revisado: 01-11-24
This is my first ever DNF. Not even because it was bad... just boring. It took me ages to give up (Chapter 28). Throughout it, I listened and re-listened to 2+ books since then. it's really strange because I loved the film and the narrator's performance was fitting for Snow's POV, but damn. I usually always finish but couldn't. maybe another time I'll get around to actually enjoying it better and finishing it.

Historia
Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.

Revisado: 12-26-23
Yeah, another area where the movies are better. This book took only a few days to get through yet somehow ended up being pretty boring. The narration was absolutely wonderful though.

About three things I was certain. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him, and I didn't know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Alright
Revisado: 12-11-23
Ah, Twilight. The series got me into reading and writing. I loved it so much when i was 11 and helped me through probably my worst year in school. I knew back then it was problematic and not well-written, but my mom still allowed me to read the books. And yeah, it was a good read on a rainy day. Out of every book, i feel this one, the OG that caused the rest, was the best one. It is not as problematic. People complained about Bella being a mary sue because Edward can't read her mind, but for me, that actually is what makes their relationship and his attraction to her more believable because he doesn't enjoy hearing everyone's thoughts 24/7. The immortal age difference also doesn't bug me as much knowing that despite being 100 years old, Edward is still 17 mentally, so it doesn't feel as uneven. Bella is bland af, but honestly what teenager isn't? That said if u want an interesting protagonist, pass on this one. It's stupid tho how she chooses to move to Forks and complains nonstop about it. Like girl, you MADE this choice! So no it's not the first book I'd recommend to anyone, but i dont hate it. Twilight should've stayed a standalone book.

Historia
Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol - a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create. Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she’s afraid she cannot stop.

The movie was better
Revisado: 12-10-23
Catching Fire is pretty boring tbh. Its insane how the filmmakers manage to make perhaps the most hype and epic movie in the series from this novel. Like overall the novel version is dull... i wonder if thats because i watched the film first, but i honestly dont think it is. But at least in the film, you dont always hear Katniss angsting over whether she wants to kiss Peeta or Gale. Gosh it was annoying! Still if you loved the film series, you might as well listen to this and make up your own mind. For me it was kinda a slog.

nothing happens
Revisado: 12-10-23
Outside of the obvs problematic aspects of Twilight everyone already knows about (unhealthy relationships, imprinting 🤮), the biggest issue I had with this book is that NOTHING happens. The most that happens is that Bella and Edward get engaged officially. Other than that, nothing. Oh, her and Jacob kiss too (also he SAs her by force kissing her. Credit where it is due i guess, Myer actually had Bella herself consider the kiss an assault, but Jacob kept going "oh but you wanted it" shit smh so--doesnt stick), but that doesn't actually impact the plot in any way so I didn't feel it was worth mentioning. Bella still ultimately chooses Edward.

Historia
The word "holodomor" derives from a combination of two Ukrainian words: holod (hunger) and mor (extermination). This term is used to describe one of the least-known events of state-sponsored mass starvation: the Great Famine of Soviet Ukraine in 1932-1933. Around four million Ukrainians died during the famine, and yet, the extent of this human catastrophe was virtually unknown in the West. Up to 1991, the Soviet Union refused to acknowledge that any famine had taken place in Ukraine at all.

Revisado: 07-25-23
This, especially with Matthew's voice, did great explaining what the Holodmor was and how it sadly occurred. It was simple and easy to understand. I recommend reading this to get an insight into what has been silenced for over 90 years now. Please, read it. More people, especially kids, need to know about the Holodomor.

I want it out of my library
Revisado: 07-25-23
If it weren't for Elizabeth Evans' narration, I would have not been able to make it through this book. The first few minutes had me rolling my eyes at how insufferable the main character is. I did come out liking Chaol, I will say that, but he couldn't save this novel from its bad writing. Chaol you deserved a better author and book :(
