Historia
This novel biography brings Marcus Aurelius (121-180 CE) to life for a new generation by exploring the emperor’s fascinating psychological journey. Donald J. Robertson examines Marcus’s relationships with key figures in his life, such as his mother, Domitia Lucilla, and the emperor Hadrian, as well as his Stoic tutors. He draws extensively on Marcus’s own Meditations and correspondence, and he examines the emperor’s actions as detailed in the Augustan History and other ancient texts.

Not as in depth as I was hoping
Revisado: 01-24-25
The author did a great job of explaining events prior to Marcus Aurelius becoming the emperor, but not as much during his actual reign. It was still a good listen, well researched and delivered.

Easy read, great style
Revisado: 04-10-24
The book was written as a story with historical fact as a foundation. It was easy to follow, even with limited knowledge of the main characters and the historical role each played during this time in Japanese history. What an amazing life this person lived!

Historia
Arimnestos of Plataea grew up wanting to be a bronzesmith, like his father. Then, in the chaos of war, he was taken to a city in the Persian empire and sold as a slave. To win his freedom he had to show that he could fight and kill. Now, to preserve that freedom, he must kill again. For the Persians are coming. A vast army sent by King Darius to put down the rebellious Greeks and burn the city of Athens to the ground. Standing against them on the plain of Marathon is a much smaller force of Athenians, alongside their Plataean allies. To defeat such overwhelming force seems impossible.

There are a lot of characters, but the author doesn't over complicate the storyline. It is worth a second read to pick up all of the details.

As with the 1st book in this series the author introduces a lot of characters that can be difficult to keep up with. Overall the story is decent, and the reader does a good job in his performance.

Historia
The Dacian kingdom and Rome are at peace, but no one thinks that it will last. Sent to command an isolated fort beyond the Danube, centurion Flavius Ferox can sense that war is coming but also knows that enemies may be closer to home. Many of the Brigantes under his command are former rebels and convicts, as likely to kill him as obey an order. And then there is Hadrian, the emperor's cousin, and a man with plans of his own.

The storyline was good, and the main characters likable. However, the author introduced a lot of characters, and skipped forward randomly which made the story difficult to keep up with at times. But was still enjoyable.

But when senior American officials who support the plan begin violently dying, Clarke orders Ryker and his team of CIA operatives to hunt down those responsible and bring the killing spree to an end.

Somewhat predictable storyline
Revisado: 02-06-24
As a fan of Joel Rosenburg I was a bit disappointed with this book. There are too many instances of the main character doing things that are simply not believable. And the book lacked the depth that is prevalent in most of the author's books.

Historia
It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life.

Not as good as the first, but not bad.
Revisado: 08-27-23
I enjoyed the story and storytelling. Although it seemed the main characters became contradictory and nonsensical in the latter part of the book. The use of clever phrases, spiritual deep thoughts, and the terms "as if" and "like a" as colorful ways to describe things is a bit overdone.
Again, overall this is a good book and I enjoyed it. Very difficult to replicate the brilliance of the first, but a really good effort and worth the read!

The author was inconsistent in how the main characters would speak, and interact with eachother. Also, too much disobedience, and disrespect by several characters to be believable.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.
