Historia
Unwanted and neglected from birth, Barbara Graham had to overcome the odds just to survive. Her beauty was both a blessing and a curse—offering her too many options of all the wrong kind. Her innate sensitivity left her vulnerable to the harsh realities of the street, where she was left to fend for herself before she reached double digits. Her record of petty crimes spoke to a life that constantly teetered on the brink of disaster. But in 1953, a catastrophic twist of fate would catapult her out of obscurity and into the headlines.

Well-researched account

This book has a lot to say our Criminal Justice system. Unfortunately, it was not a pleasant listen for me. I had long suspected that certain personality characteristics of the prosecutor (e.g., pathological narcissism, enjoyment in bullying others) can interfere with fundamental fairness.

The storyline here involves 3 generations of women looking for love/romance. Yes, it's chick lit. No, it doesn't involve online dating. (Why the title?) Overall rating: 3.5 stars rounded up

Poignant, gripping, emotionally satisfying
Revisado: 04-04-25
This character-driven novel is set in North Carolina in the late 1960's. I really enjoyed the cultural references. If you're looking for a cliche-ridden tale about teenage pregnancy with a happy ending, then look elsewhere. This story is about real people. Bravo, Meagan Church! I've already ordered one of your previous novels.

Minority opinion
Revisado: 03-16-25
Maybe I've OD'd on historical novels set in Europe during WW2. There was nothing extraordinary about this one. The pace was slow, even with the speed cranked up to 1.3x. The storyline seemed contrived, and character development wasn't emphasized. The narration was sometimes irritatingly over-expressive. In sum, this was just an average listen.

Black comedy?
Revisado: 03-11-25
Nothing about this book worked for me. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the author's wordy writing style, which really slowed down the pace. I also found the storyline unbelievable (and occasionally downright silly). In addition, the caricatures in the story were not real people that I cared about. I'm really not sure whether this was supposed to be a thriller or an attempt at black comedy. I had to crank the speed way up to finish.

Historia
From neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice comes a powerful and heartbreaking exploration of regret, forgiveness, freedom, and what it means to be alive.
An accomplished concert pianist, Richard received standing ovations from audiences all over the world in awe of his rare combination of emotional resonance and flawless technique. Every finger of his hands was a finely calibrated instrument, dancing across the keys and striking each note with exacting precision. That was eight months ago.
Richard now has ALS, and his entire right arm is paralyzed. His fingers are impotent, still, devoid of possibility. The loss of his hand feels like a death, a loss of true love, a divorce—his divorce.
He knows his left arm will go next.
Three years ago, Karina removed their framed wedding picture from the living room wall and hung a mirror there instead. But she still hasn’t moved on. Karina is paralyzed by excuses and fear, stuck in an unfulfilling life as a piano teacher, afraid to pursue the path she abandoned as a young woman, blaming Richard and their failed marriage for all of it.
When Richard becomes increasingly paralyzed and is no longer able to live on his own, Karina becomes his reluctant caretaker. As Richard’s muscles, voice, and breath fade, both he and Karina try to reconcile their past before it’s too late.
Poignant and powerful, Every Note Played is a masterful exploration of redemption and what it means to find peace inside of forgiveness.

Not my favorite from this author
Revisado: 03-09-25
I enjoyed the first half of this book, which focused on the impact of early ALS on character development. Unfortunately, much of the remainder of the story seemed less personal and more generic. Perhaps the disease's progression leaves everyone in more-or-less the same impaired state, but this didn't create engaging fiction for me.

Not for me
Revisado: 02-26-25
The main characters here are teenagers who are concerned with dating, breakups, and arguments with their parents. Even after cranking up the speed to 1.35x, I still found it slow-paced. Definitely not a suspenseful thriller for me.
