Historia
With Coal Region Hoodoo, Maxim W. Furek continues his exploration of high strangeness inside the Pennsylvania wormhole that gave birth to The Night of the Living Dead, The Blob, and The Philadelphia Experiment. His journey takes us beyond the netherworlds of Centralia, Sheppton, Chestnut Ridge, and The Pennhurst Asylum. It looks into the eyes of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren and the twisted souls of serial killer Gary Heidnik and con artist Richard Sharpe Shaver while exploring the preternatural secrets of Bigfoot, cryptids, Kecksburg, The Smurl Haunting, Pennsylvania Dutch Powwowing...

Boring
Revisado: 03-09-25
Reads like a series of essays written by a bright but gullible middle schoolers. A lot of the tales have a very tenuous connection to the coal region and no connection to hoodoo. Pleasant narrator.

Historia
It's 1920, and Christmas is coming. Major Lennox finds a body on his doorstep - why on his doorstep? Was it to do with the Countess? Was it about the ruby necklace? Lennox goes to Melrose Court, home to his uncle, Lord Melrose, to uncover the mystery. But then, the murders begin, and it snows, and it all becomes very complicated.

Atrocious narration
Revisado: 09-07-24
I had to give up on this one because of the narrator. His male voices are fine, but his attempts at female voices is ludicrous to the point of being unlistenable (imagine abnormally high, shrieking voices). Unbearable. I'm giving the next book a try (unfortunately the same narrator - I'm hoping there aren't any female voices in this one for him to mangle!)

Really well-crafted classic ghost story
Revisado: 10-15-22
This is a really well-crafted, classic ghost story with enough twists and turns to build suspense and keep the reader or listener spellbound. A perfect story for a chilly October night! The narrator is competent, although she can go a bit overboard at times with some of the character's voices.

They came by boat from a starving land, and by the Underground Railroad from Southern chains, seeking refuge in a crowded, filthy corner of hell at the bottom of a great metropolis. But in the terrible July of 1863, the poor and desperate of Paradise Alley would face a new catastrophe, as flames from the war that was tearing America in two reached out to set their city on fire.

Interesting story marred by amateur voice acting
Revisado: 12-18-21
I truly wish that authors had the good sense (or is it budget?) to hire professional voice actors. The topic and story are very interesting, but I had to give up after just a few episodes because the author decided to read the work herself and her untrained, amateurish reading made it impossible for me to interact with the material.

The main speaker? Speaks like this?
Revisado: 10-27-21
I listened to a few episodes and I just can't continue - the main speaker does a very poor job - she has a very unfortunate habit of framing most of her sentences as questions, even though they're not questions.

Historia
In these 10 eye-opening lectures by a practicing doctor and medical educator, you’ll walk through a series of medical mystery cases ripped from history and involving well-known historical figures whose identities are nevertheless hidden from you. Every one of these cases requires you to use your detective skills to identify and diagnose the mystery patient just like the doctors that attended them. In the process, you’ll learn fascinating insights into medicine: both the medicine that was practiced thousands of years ago and the medicine doctors practice today.

Informative and enjoyable

Excellent narration, well organized and informative, overall a very enjoyable listen. You may have heard some of these cases before as I had, but there are some surprising details for several of them that I hadn't heard before.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

I've read this book before - it is a classic and a must-read, but the narrator's performance truly brought this book to the next level - it's absolute perfection.

Historia
Berkeley, California, 1933. In a lab filled with curiosities - beakers, microscopes, Bunsen burners, and hundreds upon hundreds of books - sat an investigator who would go on to crack at least 2,000 cases in his 40-year career. Known as the "American Sherlock Holmes", Edward Oscar Heinrich was one of America's greatest - and first - forensic scientists, with an uncanny knack for finding clues, establishing evidence, and deducing answers with a skill that seemed almost supernatural.

Interesting story and individual, terrible speaker
Revisado: 03-11-21
This story is utterly fascinating, but I just can't bear the reader, whose delivery is slow, ponderous, and full of the oddest pauses and stops. I'll have to read this one myself.
