Historia
A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Historia
Born in 1891 in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, Ida Williams tells her compelling but true story of family events that turned her very early, loving childhood into one of disbelief, heartache, and horror. Because it was extremely difficult to verbalize the events to her own children years later, her adult family knew very little of the details until 30 years after her passing in 1967. That is when her granddaughter discovered her writings and promised to tell the story of what she endured.

I enjoyed learning about Mr. Olmstead's life, from early adulthood to death. It was fascinating. And I liked the way the story was told from the point of view of his wife.

Historia
During the Great Depression, labor camps crop up in remote areas throughout the American South. Destitute workers live under terrible conditions. Trapped in these isolated locations, workers are entirely dependent on the often greedy, abusive camp owners who provide food and housing at grossly inflated prices. But for the most desperate among America's vast unemployed, these camps are often the last and only option.

Very enjoyable book
Revisado: 09-12-24
Prior to reading this book, I knew nothing about turpentine farms. This novel is set in North Carolina and Georgia during The Great Depression and it centers on the lives and trials of several characters who worked in this hot, sticky, labor-intensive job. The Saints of Swallow Hill is a perfect example of why I love to read historical fiction: it enlightens me to a bit of actual history.
The author created numerous well-defined characters who ran the spectrum from downright evil to good, decent individuals. She also kept the storyline moving, which enhanced my enjoyment of the novel. I'm glad I read this book, and now I know why North Carolina is called The Tar Heel State!

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Truth that needed to be spoken
Revisado: 03-17-23
I was deeply moved by the life story of Prince Harry. The pain he suffered at the hands of the loathsome British press was deeper than I could have ever imagined. And the collusion between palace "insiders" (royals included) and the media to hurt Harry and his wife Meghan was positively sickening.
I greatly enjoyed hearing Prince Harry narrate this story himself. The speech rhythms, intonations, and inflections coming from the first person voice greatly added to the pathos and credulity of this book.
Lastly, the prose was exceptionally well-done. I'm aware that a ghost writer was employed to write this book, and whoever that writer was was a seasoned professional. Every paragraph was a superb fusion of skillful language arts and heartfelt retrospections.

Historia
A disturbing tale of a young man's uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery, The Picture of Dorian Gray was considered proof of both Wilde's genius and his perversion. Oscar Wilde's scandalous best seller of 1891 was one of the most damning pieces of evidence used against him in the trial that brought about his downfall.

Great story, but
Revisado: 09-30-21
Not a fan of the Audible narrator. She attempted a Mississippi accent and did different voices for each character. The accent and the voices were so fake that I almost didn't stick with the book. However, I listened until the end and I'm glad I did, because the story itself was worth it. I would recommend reading the book.

Historia
What if you weren't sexually attracted to anyone? A growing number of people are identifying as asexual. They aren't sexually attracted to anyone, and they consider it a sexual orientation - like gay, straight, or bisexual. Asexuality is the invisible orientation. Most people believe that "everyone" wants sex, that "everyone" understands what it means to be attracted to other people, and that "everyone" wants to date and mate. But that's where asexual people are left out - they don't find other people sexually attractive, and if and when they say so, they are very rarely treated as though that's okay.
